Belgium Players Join Forces Hydrogen Transportation

The climate target to reduce CO2 emissions in Belgium by 80% by 2050 compared to 2005 levels is a major challenge. Hydrogen has an important role to play in the mix of solutions to achieve results. That is why Deme, Engie, Exmar, Fluxys, Port of Antwerp, Port of Zeebrugge and WaterstofNet are joining forces. A joint study serves as a basis to coordinate delivery of concrete projects that shape the production, transport and storage of hydrogen. In a hydrogen economy, hydrogen is an important carrier for renewable energy to be used for electricity and heat production, for mobility, for fuel production and as a raw material for industrial production.Crucial in the viability of a hydrogen economy is the generation of sufficient renewable electricity for the production of hydrogen.

Hamburg Inland Waterway Volumes Grow

Port of Hamburg, Germany’s biggest universal port, said that in the first three months of 2019, at 2.57 million tons, the total quantity of cargo carried by inland waterway craft between the Port of Hamburg and its hinterland achieved double-digit growth of 12.1 percent. One limiting influence on the further development of quantities by inland vessel this year has been the barely navigable River Elbe caused by low water since May.From Stefan Kunze’s point of view; he is head of the Port of Hamburg Representative Office in Dresden, against this backdrop it is difficult to forecast the ongoing development of cargo quantities carried by inland vessels on the Elbe this year.Already last year…

Kuehne + Nagel to Disclose CO2 Emissions for Seafreight

Kuehne + Nagel has expanded its sustainability offering for global seafreight services: As of May 2017, the total amount of CO2 emissions generated by seafreight ship-ments is printed on each invoice assisting shippers to identify their carbon footprint from transport operations. With this initiative Kuehne + Nagel customers are able to improve the analysis, reporting and management of CO2 emissions caused by their transport chain and thus achieve long-term reduction of the environmental impact. For the calculation of the shipment CO2 data imprinted on its freight invoice, Kuehne + Nagel is using the data of its online Global Seafreight Carbon Calculator (GSCC), providing instant overviews of CO2, SOx and NOx emissions for FCL and LCL movements from door-to-door.

Hamburg Port's Rail Network Sets European Benchmark

In their “Best route market study for containerised imports to South Germany”, published at the beginning of March, the Drewry Group’s supply-chain consultants investigated via which ports containers imported from Shanghai can be transported fastest and cheapest to southern Germany, i.e. Munich, Freiburg, Stuttgart, Ulm and Nuremberg. In almost all markets under consideration, Hamburg comes out better than Rotterdam, Antwerp and the southern ports in the Mediterranean. Contributing to this are numerous direct services, a high departure frequency for container block trains and the fast transit times to/from the Hamburg quay wall. Across the North Range a total of 16 Far East liner services are currently on offer from the major container shipping lines.

That represents a 9.3 percent gain, setting a new record for Hamburg’s seaport-hinterland services with Austria. The proportion of containers on this route transported by rail exceeds over 90 percent, making rail the leading mode of transport. “Austria is a model destination in efficient and environmentally friendly hinterland transport via the Port of Hamburg. About 40 container block trains per week operate between Hamburg and Vienna. Altogether more than 80 container trains connect intermodal terminals in Austria every week with Germany’s largest port…

Swedish Shipping Joins Fossil Free Initiative

The Swedish Shipowners Association has expressed its disappointment that shipping was not included in the new climate agreement that was struck in Paris by countries represented at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. They believe that delegates in Paris failed to seize the moment to make a direct statement to the shipping industry about its commitments, and that more needs to be done to tackle the climate challenge. The Swedish shipping industry has one of the best track records of positive involvement in the development of innovative environmental solutions, and this will continue despite the Paris Agreement lacking a direct mention of shipping.

European Ports Identify Their Priorities

European ports are real “multitaskers”: they combine different functions ranging from gateway to the world, nodes in the transport chain, hotspots for Europe’s industrial activity, safe and secure shelters, the link between Europe’s peripheral regions and islands to the mainland, key players in the transport of passengers, nodes of energy, facilitators for different other sectors and sometimes an essential part of an emergency supply chain. Gathering in Athens for the 12th edition of its Annual Conference, European Sea Ports Organisation (ESPO) has presented today its views on the Mid-Term review of the 2011 White Paper on transport.

Transas: The Bridge to Tomorrow

“With each day that passes, we learn more about the power of simulation technology. We are making significant strides in the areas of visualization and modeling development that go far beyond the use of standard and typical ‘texturing’ and ‘mathematical’ tools. George Toma, President & GM, Transas Americas Inc.

Transas was founded in 1990, by a group of former navigators and engineers, who at that time envisioned ways in which computers could revolutionize maritime safety, communications and security. In the ensuing 25 years Transas has pioneered navigational technology across a wide sector, developing into a true “household name” in the global maritime industry. In 1995, Transas also entered the highly competitive simulation market, and today there are more than 13,000 vessels sailing with Transas navigation systems, and more than 5,500 simulators installed, globally.
