GEV, Ballard Developing Hydrogen Fuel Cell-powered Ship

Global Energy Ventures (GEV) and Ballard Power Systems have teamed up to design and develop a hydrogen fuel cell system for GEV’s C-H2 Ship.Under a newly executed memorandum of understanding (MOU), GEV and Ballard will work to power the C-H2 Ship using compressed hydrogen from its storage tanks, providing a zero-emissions marine transport supply chain.The power required for a small-scale demonstration of the C-H2 Ship is expected to be under 10 megawatts (MW). Green Maritime Methanol Project Gets a Boost

Shipowners, shipyards, manufacturers and ports have joined forces to investigate the feasibility of methanol as a sustainable alternative transport fuel in the maritime sector.Major shipowners Boskalis, The Royal Netherlands Navy, Van Oord and Wagenborg Shipping will take part in the consortium, together with shipbuilders, Damen Shipyards, Feadship, Royal IHC and major marine engine manufacturers Pon Power and Wärtsilä together with their trade association VIV.Specialized marine equipment suppliers like Marine Service Noord and maritime service providers including C-Job Naval Architects complete the maritime supply chain.Work to study the infrastructure and supply chain for methanol is also addressed by the participation of The Netherlands’ two largest ports…

Lyras Urges for Transparency

"A massive decrease in the number of tanker operators is highly likely in the future as oil companies become increasingly exposed to liabilities related to their transport supply chain," Dimitris Lyras, advisor to the board of Ulysses Systems, told delegates at yesterday's Tanker Operations Conference in London. Oil companies must make sure that their transport supply chain stands up to scrutiny in any eventuality, Lyras asserts, otherwise they risk enormous penalties in public perception and stock valuation. An oil major's liability for an oil spill is far greater than the cleanup and claimant compensation, the real cost is from damage to their long-term image and reputation as responsible energy suppliers.
