COSCO Launches World's Largest Oil Tanker Fleet
China's largest shipping company by fleet size China COSCO Shipping Co has officially launched COSCO Shipping Energy Transportation Co in Shanghai on Monday, creating the world's largest oil tanker fleet in terms of both ship numbers and deadweight tonnage, says a report in China.org.cn. With a total of 105 oil tankers, including nine liquefied natural gas carriers and a deadweight tonnage of 17.04 million, the new company has the world's biggest fleet of oil tankers and the largest transport capacity of its kind. The asset value of COSCO Shipping Energy Transportation accounts for 11 percent of COSCO Shipping's total assets, and its oil tanker fleet holds 20 percent of the group's entire shipping capacity.
Québec, Indiana Partner for Great Lakes Shipping
Québec Minister of International Relations and Francophonie Christine St-Pierre and Indiana Lieutenant Governor Sue Ellspermann today announced that the Province of Québec and the State of Indiana will launch a new partnership to intensify their collaboration in Great Lakes/St. Lawrence System shipping and maritime economic development. Recent studies have shown that for the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence region, maritime transportation accounts for $34 billion in annual economic returns and more than 225,000 jobs.

New US Coast Guard regulations require Washington State Ferries to increase crew on Puget Sound routes. The Jumbo, Super, Issaquah and Evergreen State ferry classes – which carry many of the system’s 22 million annual riders – have new staffing requirements before they may sail on the waters of Puget Sound, in order to comply with a new directive from the United States Coast Guard. Washington State Ferries has already added two crewmembers to the Issaquah ferry and will implement the new staffing levels for the others once the USCG issues the revised certificate of inspection for each vessel.

Hanjin Upbeat, Eyes Bigger Ships
Hanjin Shipping Co., cautiously upbeat on its prospects, will lease bigger ships as the company turns to profitability this year, its president said. Cho Sooho, the head of the South Korean firm, said that its sales could rise by five to six percent to $3.5 billion in 1999 from a year earlier. Its net profit for the second half of 1999 is expected to be higher than the 11.4 billion won posted in the January-June period. Hanjin Shipping, an affiliate of the Hanjin Group, is one of South Korea's two major carriers; the other is Hyundai Merchant Marine Co. Ltd. Hanjin and Hyundai handle about half of South Korean outbound traffic. Cho said Hanjin was replacing some of its older ships to increase its capacity. Container transportation accounts for about 78 percent of Hanjin's revenues.
