Herculaneum Port Site Cleared for Redevelopment as Intermodal Hub

A 300-acre property along the Mississippi River in Herculaneum, Missouri recently received Port District zoning making way for redevelopment as an intermodal transportation hub and industrial park.Located on the shipping lanes of the Mississippi River, the site has been utilized since the 1700s as a port. With its easy access for barge loading and offloading and the site’s proximity to early lead mines in adjacent Washington County, under early French ownership the port was utilized to ship lead cannonballs and shot to Europe to support Napolean’s army.

Tidewater to Expand Columbia River Barge Service

DNV Grants AIP to SHI for New Liquified CO2 Carrier Design

DNV has awarded an approval in principle (AIP) to Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) for its new liquefied CO2 (LCO2) carrier design.The innovation incorporates customized large cargo tanks (pressurized IMO Type-C) and a reliable cargo handling system with highly efficient reliquefication technology.The AIP, presented at the Gastech 2022 Exhibition in Milan, confirms that DNV has reviewed SHI's design against the requirements of the IGC code and DNV guidelines applicable to CO2 carriers.SHI’s…

Dry Bulker Business Down, Says MOL

In the dry bulker business, the market is deteriorating to a new record low due to the imbalance of fleet supply and demand, along with stagnant cargo trade resulting from the slowdown in China’s economy since last fall, says Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. Regarding the containership business, cargo volume, mainly for Europe and emerging countries, hovered at low levels while a succession of newbuilding vessels came into service, keeping freight rates at historic lows. Although the Company expects the market to recover to some extent, in light of its uncertainties it decided to implement structural reforms in these businesses to address the abruptly changing business climate.

New Barge Fleeting and Switching Operation in Cairo Harbor

American River Transportation Company (ARTCO), a subsidiary of Archer Daniels Midland Company (ADM), today announced plans to launch new barge fleeting and switching operations in the Cairo, Illinois, harbor starting January 1, 2016. The Cairo harbor is a vital hub in the inland waterway supply chain. The new operation will be based in Wickliffe, Kentucky, and will provide fleeting and switching operations from mile 948 on the Lower Mississippi River to mile 29 on the Upper Mississippi and mile 974 on the Ohio River. “ARTCO is the only company in the inland waterway system that can provide a self-contained supply chain to our customers, which allows us to provide better, more efficient and cost-effective service,” said Jason Porter, vice president, ARTCO operations.

AWO Celebrates 70th

The American Waterways Operators celebrates its 70th anniversary as a trade association, founded on May 20, 1944, to advocate for towboat and barge operators in response to changing national transportation needs and the new regulatory climate emerging during World War II. The association has grown into a national organization representing tugboat, towboat and barge operators on the inland waterways, along the coasts, on the Great Lakes, and in ports and harbors around the country.

U.S. Facing Tank Vessel Shortage

The U.S could face a severe U.S.-flag tank vessel shortage unless the pace of double-hulled vessel construction increases drastically, according to an analysis released recently by the Shipbuilders Council of America. At issue is the Oil Pollution Act of 1990 (OPA 90), which requires single-hulled tank vessels to be phased out of service or converted to double-hulled vessels to reduce the risk of oil spills. Under OPA 90, the U.S. will lose as much as 28 percent of its total existing tank vessel capacity, including 45 percent of all large, ocean-going tank barges, by the end of 2004.
