ONE Acquires Stakes in Three California Box Terminals

Japanese container shipping company Ocean Network Express (ONE) announced it has acquired controlling stakes in three California container terminals amid a push by many of the world's largest global shipping lines to expand their presence in the port infrastructure component of the logistics chain.ONE, which is jointly owned by the Japanese shipping lines Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYL), Mitsui O.S.K. Port of Virginia Names Edwards CEO

The Virginia Port Authority Board (VPA) of Commissioners today introduced Stephen Edwards as the next leader of The Port of Virginia. He succeeds John F. Reinhart who for the last seven years has led the VPA as its CEO and executive director.Edwards has extensive experience in the global transportation industry most recently as the president and CEO of TraPac, LLC (TraPac), which operates container terminals in Los Angeles, Oakland and Florida. His tenure with the VPA begins on January 19, 2021.“I am delighted to be joining the Virginia Port Authority team in January,” Edwards said.

Port of Oakland Completes TraPac Terminal

Port of Oakland’s container terminal operator, TraPac, concluded a USD 67 million waterfront expansion in January 2019 as it opened a new vessel berth to arriving container ships.The milestone signals completion of a two-year project at Oakland’s second-largest terminal that has nearly doubled TraPac’s footprint from 66 to 123 acres; boosted its fleet of ship-to-shore cranes from four to seven; and added a third 1,400-foot-long dock for berthing mega containerships.“We are grateful to dockworkers, truckers, carriers, cargo owners and all of our stakeholders for working with us during this buildout,” said TraPac Operations Vice President Brian Bauer.

Containerized cargo volume moving through Port of Oakland is expected to increase 2 percent annually for the next five years. The catalyst for growth: a nearly $700 million injection of capital from outside investors. That’s the message Port of Oakland officials delivered to trade and transportation leaders here this week. “This is good, measured growth that’s not debilitating for our community or our operations,” Executive Director Chris Lytle told a meeting of the Port’s 55-member Efficiency Task Force. The Port boss said investment in facilities and infrastructure is boosting Oakland’s global trade status. Projects range from a new logistics campus to an online information gateway for cargo owners.

Port of LA Sets New Record with 2017 Container Throughput

The Port of Los Angeles moved more cargo in 2017 than in any time in the Port’s 110-year history, racking up 9,343,192 Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units (TEUs), a 5.5 percent increase over 2016’s record-breaking year. It’s the most cargo moved annually by a Western Hemisphere port. “We are powering Los Angeles’ economy to new heights every year, because we know that lasting prosperity means investing boldly in jobs, opportunity, and growth,” said Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti. “The success of our Port tells the story of a city whose moment has arrived — and we will continue pushing forward as we expand our role in the global economy,” Eric added. “2017 was a year beyond expectations but it was not by chance,” said Port of Los Angeles Executive Director Gene Seroka.

EPA Grant for Port of LA

The Port of Los Angeles has received an $800,000 grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to deploy green commercial equipment for moving cargo. The award will pay between 25 to 40 percent of the cost to replace and upgrade 18 pieces of yard equipment at two Los Angeles container terminals, with the full complement due to be in service by fall 2018. Two terminal operators, APM Terminals Pacific Ltd. and TraPac LLC, are funding the lion’s share of the $3 million project. APM Terminals will invest more than $2 million to replace 16 yard tractors with new equipment powered by Tier 4 clean diesel engines. TraPac will spend $174,000 to repower two heavy-duty forklifts with Tier 4 engines.

TraPac Selects NASCENT Technology’s Automated Gate System

NASCENT Technology, a leading provider of gate automation and related technologies, has announced that it has been selected by TraPac, LLC. to provide the automated gate system and OCR portals for their gate expansion in the Port of Oakland, CA. NASCENT will provide 16 truck gate kiosks (pedestals), 12 Yard kiosks, and 2 kiosks to be used within the Driver’s Assistance area within the facility. Of the 16 gate lanes, 9 of these are new lanes that are being built as part of the gate expansion. In addition, NASCENT will also be providing and integrating with OCR (Optical Character Recognition) Portals at both the In-bound and out-bound gate complexes.

Port of Oakland Terminal OK to Expand

Work could begin next month to nearly double the size of the Port of Oakland’s second-largest marine terminal. TraPac LLC said today it’s ready to begin construction on a 57-acre expansion at the Port’s Outer Harbor. The Board of Port Commissioners approved the project at a meeting Oct. 27. TraPac has signed a new 14-year lease with the Port to grow from 66 to 123 acres. It will add two vessel berths to the two it already operates. The terminal operator said a larger footprint will help it absorb additional cargo volume. “With this expansion, we’re making a long-term commitment to our customers and to the Port of Oakland,” said TraPac Oakland General Manager Mike Porte. TraPac is growing into property adjacent to its existing terminal.

TraPac to Double Terminal size at Oakland Port

TraPac, LLC has reached agreement to nearly double its marine terminal size at the Port of Oakland. Wilmington, CA-based TraPac said today it plans to lease an additional 57 acres and two vessel berths on the Port’s Outer Harbor. If the deal is approved, it would greatly strengthen TraPac’s position as the second-largest terminal operator in Oakland. TraPac disclosed its plans at a meeting of Oakland’s Board of Port Commissioners last night. The proposed 14-year lease agreement with the Port becomes final if the Board approves it at a meeting Oct. 27. “This is a significant step forward for TraPac and the Port,” said Port Maritime Director John Driscoll. Marine terminals load and unload containerships in Oakland. They release containerized imports to cargo owners.

Lines, Ltd. today earned recognition from the ports of both Los Angeles and Long Beach, California, for its efforts to ensure compliance with standards that call for vessels to slow down within 40 nautical miles (nm) of the shore. The programs, called Vessel Speed Reduction Program at Port of Los Angeles and Green Flag Program at Port of Long Beach, urge vessel operators to slow down to 12 knots or less within a certain range of the ports to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ), nitrogen oxide (NO X ), and sulfur oxide (SO X ) in coastal areas to conserve coastal environment, and offer annual rewards to vessel operators that achieve extraordinary compliance percentages.

Los Angeles Port Approves $1.17 bi Fiscal Budget

The Los Angeles Board of Harbor Commissioners has approved a $1.17 billion fiscal year (FY) 2016/17 annual budget for the Port of Los Angeles. As in years past, budget allocations closely align and support the four key objectives of the Port’s 2012-2017 Strategic Plan, which include: development of a world-class infrastructure that promotes growth; implementation of an efficient, secure and environmentally sustainable supply chain; improved financial performance of Port assets; and strengthened relationships with Port stakeholders. “Our Port Strategic Plan has been a great tool to keep us consistently focused and committed to our infrastructure and operational priorities,” said Ambassador Vilma Martinez, Harbor Commission President.

Port of Oakland Plans for Terminal Closure

The Port of Oakland has set its plan to move containerized cargo once a marine terminal closes March 31. The Port said today its Continuity Plan will keep trade flowing and prevent vessel diversions to other ports. The plan addresses the impending shutdown of Outer Harbor Terminals LLC, formerly known as Ports America Outer Harbor Terminals LLC. The terminal operator has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and announced it will leave Oakland. The Port said its Continuity Plan calls for ships that use Outer Harbor Terminal to relocate to berths at adjacent terminals in Oakland. It said terminals will add labor where necessary and open gates nights and weekends to accommodate additional cargo.

Kalmar Delivers ASC cranes for TraPac in Los Angeles

Kalmar, part of Cargotec, has received an order from TraPac, Inc. to deliver two new 5th generation Kalmar automatic stacking cranes (ASCs) for the expansion of TraPac's automated terminal in Los Angeles. The cranes will join a fleet of 27 Kalmar ASCs and 28 Kalmar automated straddle carriers managed by the Kalmar TLS equipment control system. The new ASCs will be delivered in 2016 and they are expected to be commissioned by the end of 2016. MOL President Reports Slack Performance

MOL President, President, Koichi Muto reported that the performance of the company was slack. Muto reported, "I am sad to report that our business performance fell short, and we could not achieve our initial target of ¥70 billion in consolidated ordinary income. Looking back at FY2014, the containership business could not achieve our targets despite the favorable winds of a depreciating yen and lower bunker prices. This was due to factors including inaccurate projections regarding the trade environment, freight rate market, and bunker prices, as well as construction delays in our terminal automation project, and led to a significant loss. In addition, repeated downward revisions of our forecasts have eroded shareholders’ trust in our company.

DMR Sees US Container Terminal Sector M&A Flurry

M&A (Merger & Acquisition) activity in the US container terminal sector is currently at its highest level since the boom time of the mid-2000s. However, whilst the type of buyer is largely similar to what it was, the rationale for pursuing today’s deals is different, considers Drewry Maritime Research (DMR) in their latest 'Container Insight Weekly'. The US container terminal sector has seen numerous high profile deals so far this year.Most of the parties on the buy side of the deals are infrastructure and financial players – the same type of buyers that were most active in acquiring US terminals in the mid-2000s. Their aims and motivations today though are somewhat different to what they were.

Port of Los Angeles Adopts Fiscal 2014-15 Budget

The Los Angeles Board of Harbor Commissioners informs it has approved a US$938.8-million fiscal year (FY) annual budget for the Port of Los Angeles. Nearly $350 million (37 percent) of the approved budget will go toward capital expenditures to help the Port maintain its global competitive position. “In the face of fierce and increasing competition from around the world, we must do whatever we can to maintain our position as the nation’s premier trade gateway,” said Ambassador Vilma Martinez, Harbor Commission President. The Port anticipates spending approximately $1.1 billion on its capital improvement program over the next five years. In the FY-2014-15 budget, $281 million will be dedicated to specific capital improvement program (CIP) projects.

Cargotec's Kalmar Receives Major Repeat Order From TraPac

Cargotec's Kalmar has won a major order to supply 17 automated stacking cranes and 11 automated straddle carriers for leading terminal services provider TraPac Inc, a subsidiary of Mitsui OSK Lines, in Los Angeles, USA. The equipment is scheduled for delivery in 2015 and early 2016. The parties have agreed not to disclose the value of the order. Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (Pres. Takao Tanaka) has received an order for two automated container cranes for railroad terminal from TraPac, Inc.. which is Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd.’s U.S. affiliated company, through MES’s U.S. affiliated company, PACECO Corp. At the container terminal that TraPac Inc. operates in Port of Los Angeles, is now being constructed for extension and alongside that, the automation of container handling equipments is being carried on as well.

Port of LA's TracPac RMG Cranes to be Integrated by Kalmar

Kalmar, part of Cargotec, has been awarded a contract for the integration of the controls for the new rail mounted gantry (RMG) cranes at the intermodal yard of TraPac Inc's terminal at the Port of Los Angeles. Kalmar explain that the RMGs will be supplied to TraPac by PACECO with the Kalmar Terminal Logistic System (TLS) ensuring they are integrated in the automated operations. TLS is part of the Kalmar SmartPort equipment automation portfolio. The intermodal yard is a substantial part of the terminal, with 30 percent of the TEUs shipped inland by rail.

Moore Director Declines Permanent Position at Port of L.A.

Interim Port of Los Angeles Executive Director Gary Lee Moore announced today that he will not apply for the permanent position. After an executive director is selected and in place, Moore will return to his duties as Los Angeles City Engineer. “I’m grateful for Gary’s leadership, particularly for putting the TraPac container terminal expansion project back on track,” said Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti. “It’s been a privilege to lead the Harbor Department since November,” Moore said.
