Seismic Isolation System for Pair of Quayside Container Cranes

A seismic isolation system provided by Casper, Phillips & Associates Inc. (CPA) has been installed on two quayside container cranes.The crane base anti-seismic isolation system (BASIS) is built on non-linear time history analysis (NLTHA) and is designed to protect the crane main structure from damage even in contingency level earthquakes. BASIS has been successfully installed and commissioned on two cranes that are in a major seismic zone in Turkey. The cranes, installed at Asyaport, have a 100 ft. (30.48m) gantry span, 223 ft. (68m) outreach, 66 ft. (20m) back-reach, and 152 ft.

Repeat DP World Antwerp Gateway Order for Kalmar

Kalmar, part of Cargotec, has been awarded the contract to heighten three ZPMC ship-to-shore (STS) cranes operated by DP World Antwerp Gateway NV. The order was booked in Cargotec's 2016 first quarter order intake, and the project is scheduled for completion during the second quarter of 2017. The order continues Kalmar's long-standing relationship with DP World, a leading global operator of marine and inland terminals. The Antwerp Gateway terminal is continuing its expansion in anticipation of significant growth in container movements and in response to the ever-increasing size of vessels. Kalmar will be responsible for the planning, engineering and execution of the heightening as well as commissioning of the project.

Kalmar to Heighten STS Cranes of DP World Antwerp

Kalmar, part of Cargotec, has been awarded the contract to heighten three Kalmar ship-to-shore (STS) cranes operated by DP World Antwerp Gateway NV. The order was signed into Cargotec's first quarter of 2015 order intake, with the completion of the project scheduled to take place in the first quarter of 2016. Kalmar will be responsible for the turnkey project, including planning and engineering, the execution of the heightening, and commissioning. The cranes, which have been operational since 2005, are to be heightened by six metres to accommodate larger vessels entering the port. This is in anticipation of significant growth in container movements.

MTU engines propel double-ended ferries in Turkey

Rolls-Royce Power Systems has just won an order for six MTU diesel engines which will be used to propel three double-ended ferries in Turkey. The ferries are being built by Turkey's Ceksan Shipyard and will be deployed by operator Izmir Metropolitan Municipality to power car and passenger ferries serving the Gulf of Izmir in western Turkey. The MTU 16V 4000 M54 engines each deliver 1685 kilowatts. For both shipyard and operator, this is a 'first' with MTU engines. On double-ended ferries, an engine is installed both at the bow and the stern. That means it is no problem for the symmetrically built vessels to change travel direction after loading and unloading. With just one engine switched on, the ferries are to reach speeds of up to 14 knots.
