Globecomm Keeps Tall Ships Connected
Iridium terminals and Wi-Fi hotspots installed for tall ship pair taking part in unique round the world voyage and Baltic summer racing. Globecomm Maritime is supporting British charity, the Jubilee Sailing Trust, keeping its two tall ships STS Lord Nelson and STS Tenacious connected to friends and family during their ground-breaking itineraries. Lord Nelson and Tenacious are the only vessels in the world specially modified to be accessible for disabled and able bodied sailors alike, the company said.
Globe Wireless Announces Promotions
Globe Wireless announced that its Board of Directors has elected Frank Coles as its president and chief operating officer. Coles is a master mariner and holds a Master’s Degree in maritime law. As a qualified English solicitor, Coles practiced shipping law in London with Richards Butler and in Hong Kong with Stephenson Harwood & Lo. He moved on to become general manager of Pacific basin Bulk Shipping in Hong Kong, and spent two years as Chief Executive Officer on Rydex Industries Corporation, a company focusing on marine communications. Before joining globe Wireless, Coles was with Litton Marine Systems, serving as vice president, business development and information technology. Coles has been the managing director of globe Wireless for the last two years.
Communication is Common Ground at CITIS
At the Communications & IT in Shipping (CITIS) conference at Inmarsat’s Headquarters in London, Telaurus Communications emphasized the importance of communication in the recently passed ISPS Code to a group of delegates largely unaware of its ramifications. A survey of the group showed that 78 percent of those attending knew little of the implications of the legislation. With the compliance date just 16 months away the conference was left in no doubt regarding the urgency of the issues. The Telaurus presentation identified five aspects of the legislation where communication was vital to its implementation and effectiveness. Those areas were Crew Calling, Security Planning, Training, AIS & other surveillance technologies and Crisis and Emergency Response.
