An oil tanker and a Norwegian navy frigate collided off Norway's west coast on Thursday, injuring eight people and triggering the temporary shutdown of a North Sea crude export terminal, Norway's top gas processing plant and several offshore fields.The frigate, which recently took part in a major NATO military exercise, was aground and tilting on one side, live television pictures showed. Bored with palm-fringed beaches and turquoise seas? Then the gigantic oil platforms of the North Sea beckon. The first ever "rig-spotting" cruise just ended off the coast of Norway, and those onboard the four-day trip said it was jawdropping. "I couldn't believe that these big buildings could be made," said passenger Kari Somme, 86, after seeing Statoil's Troll A platform - the heaviest structure ever moved by mankind - towering 200 metres (650 feet) above the surface of the sea. "It's just wonderful, just wonderful. I was so excited because I didn't know much about it. So when I came here and we went from rig to rig, or platform to platform, I was amazed," she said. The North Sea is usually known for its cold and storms.

Mexican oil company Pemex said an accident on Tuesday has left an offshore maintenance rig in the southern Bay of Campeche listing, killing two workers, but has not affected crude production. Pemex said the Troll Solution rig, which was contracted to operate in Pemex's Abkatun-Pol-Chuc shallow water oil field, was positioning itself to carry out maintenance on wells linked to the Caan Alf platform. It earlier reported that two workers had suffered minor injuries. "The accident on the Troll Solution platform does not affect production because it is a mobile platform dedicated to well maintenance," Pemex said in a Tweet. Photos circulated on social media showed dark streaks in the water stretching a few hundred meters (yards) from what appeared to be the platform, which was tilting steeply.

Norway's Statoil shut oil and gas production at its Troll C platform in the North Sea after inspections found corrosion damage on a pipeline, the company said in a statement on its website on Wednesday. The platform was shut on Sunday and the repair is expected to take seven days, Statoil said. "Troll C has a daily equity production of some 58,000 barrels of oil, and exports 8 million cubic metres of gas," Statoil said. "In addition some 34,000 barrels of oil and 2 million cubic metres of gas are transported from the Fram field through the Troll C platform." Reporting by Nerijus Adomaitis

ABB wins Statoil order to install high voltage power subsea cables  to the 'Troll' A gas platform on the western coast of Norway. The Troll A concrete deep water structure is the world’s largest natural gas production platform, 473 meters tall and weighs 1.2 million tons; it is the tallest structure ever to be moved by mankind. The platform can produce as much as 120 million cubic meters per day; it contains approximately 40 percent of the natural gas reserves on the Norwegian Continental Shelf and is a cornerstone of the gas supply to the European Continent.

Specialist engineering company, STATS Group, has completed an 18 month design, manufacturing and installation project to enable the tie-in of a fifth pipeline on Statoil’s Troll A Platform. Statoil’s Troll A platform, located off the west coast of Norway, utilises a system of seal tubes to tie-in risers which are run down the inside of a dry concrete leg. The seal tubes were concreted in place at the base of the riser leg on the gravity base structure in 1991. There are seven seal tubes – four designed for large bore pipe up to 36” - and three designed for smaller diameter pipe up to 20”.

Statoil and its partners in the Troll licence on the Norwegian continental shelf (NCS) decided in September to invest NOK 11 billion in two new compressors on Troll A. The two new compressors will enable Statoil to produce gas even faster and accelerate production at the Troll field by allowing for production with reduced wellhead pressure. The compressors will enable the production of gas from the field all the way until 2063. "The new pre-compressors on Troll A will be powered by electricity supplied from Kollsnes.

Statoil has awarded Aibel a contract for modules and modifications for two new pre-compressors on the Troll A platform in the North Sea. The contract is worth an estimated NOK 2.7 billon. Subsea 7 Inc has been awarded a $100m contract from StatoilHydro for engineering, procurement, construction and installation of the Troll B Gas Injection project in the Norwegian sector of the . The Troll B Gas Injection project will be developed with two separate subsea satellite wells, located respectively 3.5 km and 6.5 km south of the Troll B platform. The wells will be connected to the Troll B platform by a single gas injection pipeline and a control umbilical. Subsea 7’s scope is to engineer, procure, fabricate and install a 6.5 km long 12” rigid pipeline, incorporating in-line and end structures for the connection to the satellite wells, in addition to the control umbilicals.

Canyon Offshore has recently signed a three-year Frame Agreement with Coflexip Stena Offshore Norge AS (CSONOR) to provide trenching services supporting CSONOR’s installation activities in Norway. The agreement is also open to all Technip-Coflexip entities worldwide. The primary equipment engaged under this agreement will be Canyon’s new Triton 750 Trencher, currently being manufactured by Perry Slingsby Systems Ltd. at their Kirbymoorside facility in the United Kingdom. The system develops 750 horsepower, weighs in at 23 metric tons and is capable of producing 3-meter trench depths and operating in soil strengths up to 125 kPa. The system will be delivered to Canyon in May 2003 and will undertake extensive sea trials in June.

Dresser-Rand will supply gas export compression equipment for Statoil's Troll A platform in the North Sea. The equipment, approaching $8 million, is being purchased by ABB AS Offshore Systems and will be supplied under the terms of D-R's frame contract with Statoil. D-R will provide two DATUM centrifugal compressors driven by 40 MW electric motors to the main contractor ABB AS Offshore Systems. The motors, purchased by Statoil directly from ABB Industries will be shipped to the module manufacturing yard in Norway and connected to the compressor packages under supervision of D-R and ABB. D-R's LeHavre, France, facility will provide the DATUM compressors. Delivery is scheduled for September 2003, with the equipment expected to go online in May 2005.

Aker Kvaerner Subsea has been awarded a contract for supply of tie-in and connection system for Hydro's Fram Øst and Vilje Field Development in the North Sea through Technip Norge AS. The total contract value for the two projects are approximately $3.5 million. The Fram Øst field is located in Block 35/11 and will be tied back to the Troll C platform. The Fram Øst scope of supply is engineering, hardware supply of flowline termination heads, clamp connectors, hubs, porch structures and various caps. In addition to the hardware equipment, rental of tools and hire in offshore service personnel from our service group will be provided. Delivery of the hardware equipment is February 2006 with offshore service and support July 2006.
