Brand New Ro-Ro Ran Aground in Norway

Ro-ro cargo vessel Kvitbjørn ran aground off Ulsteinvik port, Norway, in the afternoon June 28, while approaching the port. The vessel, owned by Norway-based Nor Lines, was refloated at 2145 LT same day with the help of tugs at high tide, and taken to port. It is understood, that vessel suffered some damages, but no leak reported. There were 15 onboard, with no injuries reported. The grounding was caused by mechanical failure, though vessel is brand new. Kvitbjørn – means White Bear or Polar Bear – is a liquefied natural gas (LNG)-fueled cargo ferry that will provide regular service along the Norwegian west coast and between northern Europe and Norway.

Nor Lines Launches Cuxhaven RoRo Link

The Norwegian shipping company Nor Lines has started a direct weekly RoRo connection between German Port of Cuxhaven and Norway. The first departure of the liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered 5,000 dwt short sea cargo vessel MS Kvitbjørn was on May 7. Two new RoRo vessels - vitbjørn and Kvitnos - will be used on this service. ”The favourable location of the CuxPort Terminal, Cuxhaven and its logistics expertise, particularly in the RoRo sector, played a major role in our choice of port,” said Sigurd Ur, Director for Sales & Marketing at Nor Lines. In addition to performing the handling work, Cuxport will also operate as the clearance and booking agent. The port logistics specialist will also carry out the marketing work for Nor Lines in Germany.

Rolls-Royce LNG Environship Delivered to Eidsvaag

LNG as marine fuel takes another step forward as Eidsvaag AS took delivery of the first vessel of the Rolls-Royce prize winning Environship range this week, featuring a combination of Rolls-Royce design and technologies which reduce CO2 emissions by up to 40 percent compared to similar diesel powered vessels. Once in operation the vessel will operate a demanding schedule with a weekly round voyage along the Norwegian coast delivering feed pellets to fish farms regardless of weather conditions.

Rolls-Royce has a Gas with Bergen Engines

March 2013 saw Rolls Royce collect the Green Ship Technology Award at the Green Ship Technology Conference in Hamburg for its Environship concept, which has lean burn Bergen Engines gas power units at it core. The Environship combines a range of Rolls Royce technologies (Bergen Engines is a subsidiary business) in a cargo ship model that, set against comparable vessels using diesel power engines, offers CO2 reductions of up to 40% (alongside 92% reductions in NOx and 100% less SOx emissions).

China Shipyard Starts NOR LInes LNG-powered Cargo Ship Build

Tsuji Heavy Industries Jiangsu begins construction the first of two LNG-powered 5,000 dwt vessels for NOR Lines. The contract to build the two 5,000 dwt vessels was signed in October 2011 and construction has now begun with owner's representative and classification society DNV surveyor in attendance. NOR Lines operates a fleet of 16 cargo ships and 11 express vessels in Norwegian/Scandinavian coastal waters serving more than 70 ports. ABS Elects New Council

At the 150th Annual Meeting of the Members of ABS, three industry leaders were elected to the ABS Council. Following the Annual Meeting, the ABS Council met and elected industry leaders to both its Marine and Offshore Technical Committees. Individuals serving on the ABS Council and the Technical Committees help guide the class society in fulfilling its mission of promoting the security of life, property and the natural environment. “Classification represents the concept of self-regulation for the marine and offshore industry,” said ABS President and CEO Christopher J. Rolls-Royce Wins Order for "Enviroship"

Rolls-Royce received its first order for vessels based on the Group’s award-winning Environship concept. Rolls Royce will design and provide integrated power and propulsion systems for two technologically advanced cargo vessels, which have been purchased by Norwegian transportation company, Nor Lines AS. These highly efficient ships incorporate a striking wave piercing bow,  gas powered engines and an innovative Promas propulsion system, which combined, significantly improves the overall performance of the vessel, increasing fuel efficiency by up to 18 per cent.

Campbell Orders Two Bulk Carriers

Bahamian shipowners Campbell Shipping Ltd. signed an order with Tsuji Heavy Industries (Jiangsu) Ltd., located at  Changjiagang, Jiang Su for two 37,500 dwt double-hull log fitted bulk carriers, with an option for two more. These ships, which will be classed by ABS and fly the Bahamas flag, are to have 179.9 meter lengths overall with 30.4 meter beams, scantling drafts of 10.2 meters and service speeds of 13.9 knots. Their prime movers will be MAN B&W 5S50ME-9.2 Tier II diesels. The vessels are being built to the “SEATRANSPORTER” series design developed by Nassau-based Algoship Designers, with basic, classification and production designs produced by Smart Engineering and Design Solutions Ltd. (SEDS), an engineering firm with offices in Nassau, Bahamas and Kochi, India.
