Japanese shipbuilders Mitsui E&S Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (MES) and Tsuneishi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. announced they have signed a business cooperation agreement to partner in areas of commercial shipbuilding.The compatriot shipbuilders had announced in February 2018 they were discussing plans to partner, becoming the latest in a string of Japanese yards to team up to combat the industry downturn.Now, after several months of dialog, MES and Tsuneishi have identified specific areas for collaboration.

Two more Japanese shipyards have formed a business alliance as the nation’s shipbuilders continue to struggle against an industry downturn. Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (MES) and TSUNEISHI Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. say they will collaborate on commercial shipbuilding and design, becoming the latest in a string of Japanese shipbuilders to form similar partnerships in attempts to better compete with yards in China and South Korea. The two companies are still discussing specific conditions for the agreement, but say they will remain independent.

The Great Eastern Shipping Co Ltd. (G E Shipping) has signed a contract to sell “Jag Vidhi”, a Very Large Gas Carrier. The 1990 built vessel of about 49,701 dwt will be delivered to the buyers in the second half of 2014-15. On 21st May this year the company had delivered its 1996 built Medium Range Product Tanker “Jag Padma” (47,172 dwt) to the buyers. Excluding “Jag Vidhi”, the Company’s fleet stands at 28 vessels, comprising 20 tankers (8 crude carriers, 12 product carriers) and 8 dry bulk carriers (1 Capesize, 3 Kamsarmax and 4 Supramax) with an average age of 9.5 years aggregating 2.32 mn dwt. The company has six new buildings on order. A Medium Range (MR) Product Tanker is on order with STX (Dalian) Shipbuilding Co. Ltd.,China.

Wisdom Marine Group signed a two-tranche syndicated loan agreement for $5.92 million (USD) and ￥11.88 billion ($119.43 million, USD) with six domestic banks to finance its orders with three Japanese shipbuilders, Taipei Times reported. The syndicated loan was co-led by First Commercial Bank and Bank of Taiwan, with participating loans from Taiwan Cooperative Bank, Hua Nan Commercial Bank, Bank SinoPac and Bank of Kaohsiung. Wisdom Marine and its subsidiaries placed orders with three Japanese shipbuilders Oshima Shipbuilding Co Ltd, Sasebo Heavy Industries Co Ltd and Tsuneishi Shipbuilding Co Ltd to build six bulk vessels. Delivery is anticipated sometime between this year and 2015.

Diana Shipping Inc. (NYSE:DSX),  was the  successful bidder at an auction that took place in France, for the m/v Valeria Della Gatta (to be renamed Maia), a 2009-built Kamsarmax dry  bulk carrier of 82,193 dwt, built by Tsuneishi Shipbuilding Co. Ltd.,  Japan, for a purchase price of EURO14.755 million. Separately, the Company also announced that it has entered into a time  charter contract with ADM International Sarl, Rolle, Switzerland,  through a separate wholly-owned subsidiary, for one of its  Post-Panamax dry bulk carriers, the m/v Alcmene. for a period of about eighteen (18) months to maximum twenty-four (24)  months. The charter is expected to commence on February 23, 2013. The Alcmene is a 93,193 dwt Post-Panamax dry bulk vessel built in 2010.

Diana Shipping Inc. signs MOU to buy a new-building bulk ship from a third party; subsidiaries negotiate term loan facilities. The new-building Kamsarmax dry bulk carrier, to be named Myrto of 82,131 dwt, was built by Tsuneishi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., Japan, and the purchase price is US$26.5-million. The vessel is expected to be delivered to Diana Shipping at the end of January 2013. Separately, the Company also announced that it signed, through two separate wholly owned subsidiaries, a term loan facility with Nordea Bank Finland Plc, London Branch, and has completed the drawdown of US$20-million. The deal is said to be the first of its kind, initiating a strategic collaboration between Japanese and South Korean shipbuilders. The cooperation would entail the construction and repair of cargo vessels and special purpose ships.

Wärtsilä Corporation has received repeat orders for the Wärtsilä 64, the company’s powerful medium-speed diesel engine. Four Wärtsilä 6L64 engines were ordered at the beginning of this year by the Polish shipbuilder Stocznia Szczecinska Nowa Sp.z o.o. as main engines for four 18,900 tdw multi-purpose vessels recently contracted by the Dutch shipowner Spliethoff Bevrachtningskantoor B.V. These vessels, which are repeats of the 10 S-class vessels delivered in 1999-2000 to the same owner, four of which were built by Stocznia Szczecinska in Poland, three by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. , and three by Tsuneishi Shipbuilding Co. Ltd in Japan. The latest four newbuildings are expected to be delivered between April 2004 and April 2005.

Japan retains its perch atop the world commercial shipbuilding heap, although its position grows increasingly precarious with the continued emphasis on shipbuilding market share by its Korean competitors, and the emergence of low-cost, hungry start-ups in China and the former Eastern bloc nations. The challenges facing the Japanese shipbuilders and ship equipment suppliers are not unlike those faced by its European counterparts during much of the past decade. While Japan's strong suit continues to be its ability to mass produce tankers and bulk carriers in a very efficient and profitable manner, its technical prowess and continually refined manufacturing procedures can only take it so far in what continues to be a labor intensive process.
