AAPA, USDOT to Commemorate NM Day Jointly
A little-known annual American commemoration is coming up again on May 22 - National Maritime Day. It was declared by Congress in 1933 to call attention to America’s proud maritime heritage and to honor the men and women who serve and have served as U.S. merchant mariners. It’s also a day to recognize and reflect on the rewards that America’s ports bring the country in terms of jobs, economic development, goods movement and international competitiveness. For the American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA)—the unified and recognized voice of seaports in the Americas—National Maritime Day offers the nation’s ports a great opportunity to showcase the value of their facilities, operations and personnel to their respective communities.

Svitzer, Guangzhou Port JV to provide Towage
Guangzhou Port Group and Svitzer signed an MOU (memorandum of understanding) with the intention of forming a joint venture providing towage and related marine services for the Port of Guangzhou. Guangzhou Port Group is the world’s 5th largest port with more than 100 vessel calls a day and a large towage market. If finally formed, the joint venture will provide towage and related marine services within the Guangzhou port with three tugs ranging from 5200HP to 6800HP. With coverage of some 40 countries and a fleet of more than 400 vessels, Svitzer is a leading global provider of towage and emergency response with an experienced management team.
Great Lakes Shipyard to Build Guatemalan Harbor Tug
U.S. shipbuilding and repair yard Great Lakes Shipyard informs it has signed a contract to build another of its HandySize Class, 3,400 HP twin-screw tugboat for harbor towing operations in Puerto Quetzal, a commercial cargo, container and cruise port located on the Pacific coast of Guatemala in Central America. Damen Delivers Ice Class Tug to Lithuania
The Damen Shipyards Group has delivered an ASD Tug 2810 ICE to Klasco Towage Assistance, an affiliate of Klaipeda Stevedoring Company (KLASCO). The largest tugboat service provider in the Port of Klaipeda (Lithuania), this is the company’s first purchase of a Damen tug, although it also currently charters a Damen 3110 from the Klaipeda State Seaport Authority, the builder noted. Named the Klasco-3, the ASD Tug 2810 ICE will be based in Klaipeda and participate in day-to-day port towage operations there.
San Diego Tugboat Fleet Converts to Shore Power
Pacific Tugboat Service, a member of the Port of San Diego's Green Business Network, has converted its fleet of 20 vessels. Shore power, also known as cold ironing, is the process of switching from a ship's onboard diesel power supply to shore-based electrical power while the ship is at the dock. This process reduces polluting air emissions and noise levels from idling engines. "I think the Green Business Network taught us is that we're not just a small business trying to make a living on the Bay, but we're a neighbor," said Pacific Tugboat Service Vice President Stephen Frailey.
Bay-Houston Towing Buys Tractor Tug
Bay-Houston Towing Co. announced that it has purchased the tractor tug C-TRACTOR 1 from Alpha Marine Services. The tug, which will be renamed the WILLIAM M, will be based in Corpus Christi, TX. The WILLIAM M is a true tractor design, with the Ulstein drive units located forward. This allows the twin EMD 16-645 engines to generate 110,000 pounds of bollard pull both ahead and astern. Her design speed is 12 kts. The WILLIAM M is 102’ long, has a beam of 37’, and a working draft of 17’. The tug was built in 1989 at North American Shipbuilding. The WILLIAM M has considerable fire fighting capability. It can pump 3500 gallons per minute through fore and aft fire fighting monitors.
Pacific Tugboat Service Awarded Contract
Pacific Tugboat Service, San Diego, Calif., is being awarded an $8,052,763 indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity, cost-plus-fixed-fee contract for maintenance, upkeep and repair of government owned vessels. Work will be performed in San Diego, Calif., and is expected to be completed by May 2011. Contract funding in the amount of $50,000, will expire at the end of the current fiscal year. The contract was competitively procured and advertised via the internet, with one offer received. The Naval Undersea Warfare Center, Newport, R.I., is the contracting activity.
