Hyundai Global Service (HGS), the aftercare division of shipbuilder and engine maker Hyundai Heavy Industries, has teamed up with ABB Turbocharging to offer an engine part-load optimization (EPLO) service for shipowners seeking to cut emissions in line with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) requirements.Ahead of the entry into force of the Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI) and Carbon Intensity Index (CII) regulations in 2023, many vessel owners are looking to engine power limitation as a solution.

Damen Equipment for Korea's Oil Spill Recovery/Dredging Vessel

Dutch Damen Shipyards Group has signed a deal with Korean yard Hanjin Heavy Industries and Construction (HHIC) to deliver components for an oil recovery/dredging vessel. Under the deal, Damen will deliver all equipment for oil recovery operations as well as a complete dredging installation. The 5,000 tons, 4,100 m3 vessel multi-purpose vessel will primarily act as an oil recovery vessel, and will undertake work as a hopper dredger when not tending to emergencies.The equipment package comprises the dredging gear, the oil sweeping gear, and the electric and hydraulic system.

Unique Group Wins COOEC Contract

Unique Group has been awarded a multi-million-dollar contract by China Offshore Oil Engineering Co., Ltd (COOEC).The contract was signed at the 2nd CNOOC Global Procurement signing ceremony held on November 7th, as a part of CIIE 2019 in Shanghai, China.Under this contract, Unique Group will design, manufacture and deliver a classed saturation diving system to be integrated on COOEC’s vessel, including technical support during and post installation. All equipment will comply with DNV and International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA) guidelines.

Dredger Converted to Dual-fuel

The first European dredger converted to dual-fuel LNG/MGO propulsion has departed Damen Shiprepair Dunkerque (DSDu) to return to work, 23 months after contract signing. The 117m, 8,500 cu. m. trailing suction hopper dredger Samuel de Champlain is owned by Rouen-based GIE Dragages-Ports and operated by the Port of Nantes-Saint-Nazaire. Damen Converts Dredger to Dual-fuel

Europe’s first conversion of a dredger to dual-fuel capability combining LNG and MGO is close to completion. Damen will deliver a turnkey package that included engineering, procurement and support. Subsea and offshore solution provider Unique Group announced that its Marine & Subsea division has entered into a high value contract with the Southern African Shipyards to provide a turnkey package for hydrographic survey vessels and hydrographic office set up.The project will include multiple new build vessels - main vessel and support vessels. ACO Marine Tallies River Cruise Retrofits

Europe’s First LNG Dredger Conversion Underway

Work has kicked off at Damen Shiprepair Dunkerque to convert the trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD) Samuel de Champlain from diesel-electric propulsion to dual-fuel capability combining marine gas oil (MGO) and liquefied natural gas (LNG). Basra Gataway Buys Custom Damen Dredger

A customized Damen Cutter Suction Dredger, type CSD500, has been named by her owner Basra Gateway terminal at the Damen Dredging yard in the Netherlands. Immediately after the ceremony, the dredger was made ready for transport and towed to Rotterdam, from where it was shipped to Port of Umm Qasr, Iraq. The dredger’s first job will be the port extension for Basra Gataway Terminal. The blessing ceremony took place January 9, when the stationary dredger received the name Ishtar – which translates as ‘Goddess of Love’. The owner, Basra Gataway Terminal (BGT), performed the honors. Phillip Marsham, BGT executive officer, said, “We are proud to take delivery of our new cutter suction dredger.

Damen to Convert Dredger to Dual-fuel LNG/MGO

Damen Shiprepair & Conversion has been awarded a contract to undertake the conversion of a dredger to dual-fuel capability combining LNG and MGO – a first of its kind project in Europe. The contract was awarded by Rouen-based GIE Dragages-Ports with regard to its 117m, 8500m³ trailing suction hopper dredger Samuel de Champlain, and the works will take place next year at Damen Shiprepair Dunkerque. The conversion is part of an EU-supported initiative to promote LNG propulsion in short-sea vessels operating along the European Atlantic coast.

Radio Holland Renews Contracts with Algoma, CSL and ASC

Recently, Radio Holland Canada and Radio Holland USA celebrated the renewals of key airtime contracts on the Great Lakes with Algoma Central Corporation (ACC), The CSL Group (CSL) and American Steamship Corporation (ASC). Collectively, the three companies operate approximately 65 Lakers which include tankers, self-loading and conventional bulk carriers. The companies signed initial agreements with Radio Holland in 2007. The new agreements include increased bandwidth to meet the growing needs for the companies’ business operations and crew welfare.

Petrojarl I Drydocked for EPC Redeployment Upgrade

After four months of preliminary work alongside, FPSO Petrojarl I moved on April 16, 2015 into Damen Shiprepair Rotterdam’s 307m long x 47 m wide dry dock no 8 for work to the hull. In all, the vessel will spend a year at DSR before heading off to the South Atlantic. The Teekay managed FPSO arrived at Damen Shiprepair Rotterdam in January 2015. DSR was awarded an EPC contract by Teekay Petrojarl LLC for the upgrade, on completion of which the vessel will be redeployed at the Atlanta field in Brazil.

The Ballast Water Management Conundrum

U.S. Ten years on, there’s little certain about ballast water management regulations that the industry can chart a course around other than that it will be expensive – possibly the most costly marine retrofit to date. With install estimates running from $500,000 to as much as $5 million per vessel, across some 68,000 commercial ships estimated by the IMO to transfer 7 billion tons of  ballast water annually – industry players say we could be looking at as much as an $80 billion market. Eventually, that is, because there is not a lot of activity right now.

Wärtsilä Powered FPSO Passes Load Tests

The new P-63 Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) is powered with Wärtsilä 50DF dual-fuel engines which passed load tests. This FPSO is the first such ship to utilize gas engines to produce more than 100 MWe of power. The tests were carried out at the Cosco shipyard in Dalian, China and the vessel will commence operations in Brazil’s offshore oil fields in 2013. Wärtsilä was contracted by the Brazilian industrial group QUIP, to provide a turnkey package for this vessel.

PSVs Undergo Rapid Shipdock Antiroll Retrofit

For its recent retrofit of two antiroll tanks onto GulfMark UK’s Highland Defender and Highland Guardian, Shipdock Amsterdam said it is most proud of its rapid response and production speed, along with the ratio of 150 metric tons of steel deployed and processed relative to the contract’s limited total lead-time. In consideration of the fact that all work, from scratch, was carried out within one single location as a complete turnkey package by two Damen Shipyards subsidiaries, is a close second on the shipyard’s satisfaction scale.

Damen Partners with Three BWTS Suppliers

Damen Shipyards announced it has established three strategic partnership agreements with major Ballast Water Treatment (BWT) system suppliers. It complements the worldwide One Stop BWT Retrofitting Service offered by Damen. This one-stop service gives shipowners peace of mind in their challenge to comply with ballast water regulations in the most cost effective and timely way, Damen said. With more than 60,000 vessels to be retrofitted in the near future, there is a need to coordinate and ensure cost effective implementation and life cycle support.

Alewijnse Diesel-Electric Propulsion for Damen Cable Layer

Systems integrator Alewijnse Marine Systems has been awarded the contract for the full electrical fit out of Damen’s new cable layer, now under construction for international contractor Van Oord for delivery at the end of 2014. The 120m vessel is intended for the installation of electricity cables linking offshore wind farms to the shore. Alewijnse Noord and the Damen Shipyards Group have maintained a close working relationship for a number of years, and this latest contract is the most recent in a series of projects undertaken together.

Alewijnse Wins Electrical Installation Contract

Alewijnse Marine Systems has been awarded the contract for the full electrical refit of the 114 metre diving support vessel Seawell, owned by Helix Energy Solutions Group. The Seawell is currently in the North Sea and is expected at the Damen Shiprepair Yard in Vlissingen at mid December 2014 for a planned long term life extension. Alewijnse will spend four months on site, with the work due to start next month. The 114m vessel first entered service in 1987 and is widely credited with pioneering subsea light well intervention in the North Sea. She also operates as a saturation diving vessel.
