Three fishermen were rescued Tuesday after their vessel caught fire 1 mile east of St. Catherines Island, Georgia. U.S. Coast Guard Sector Charleston command center watchstanders received a call from the fishing vessel at 3:16 p.m. stating their vessel was on fire and sinking. A Coast Guard Station Tybee Island 29-foot Response Boat - Small boatcrew and an Air Station Savannah MH-65 Dolphin helicopter aircrew launched at approximately 3:25 p.m. The Dolphin crew arrived on scene at 4:30 p.m., hoisted the fishermen and transported to Air Station Savannah where EMS were waiting.

A Coast Guard Station Tybee Island 29-foot Response Boat - Small boat crew and an Air Station Savannah MH-65 Dolphin helicopter aircrew launched at approximately 3:25 p.m. The Dolphin crew arrived on scene at 4:30 p.m., hoisted the fishermen and transported them to Air Station Savannah to awaiting EMS. No injuries were reported. Coast Guard pollution investigators arrived on scene, and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

In the wake of Hurricane Matthew, the Port of Savannah has been reopened Thursday to two-way traffic during daylight hours as response crews continue to identify, remove, replace or repair the surrounding navigational infrastructure. “Our Coast Guard crews have been working diligently to restore operations in the Port of Savannah, and it was because of their dedication that we were able to open the port to two-way traffic,” said Coast Guard Cmdr. Amy Beach, Marine Safety Unit Savannah commander.

The dredging project in the Savannah Harbor began on Monday. The Army Corps of Engineers, the federal agency overseeing the harbor expansion, says that the project started on Tybee Island as crews on a 220-foot dredging barge worked about 5 miles offshore. The deepening will allow larger, more efficient cargo ships to navigate the East Coast’s second busiest container harbor with greater ease, heavier cargoes and fewer tidal restraints. Dredging will deepen the outer harbor, which runs 18.5 miles from Fort Pulaski to the Atlantic Ocean. The project has been in the works for about 17 years now. Lawmakers have been pushing it because it will bring substantial economic benefits to the U.S., allowing larger and more heavily-loaded vessels to access the harbor. According to the U.S.

The U.S. Coast Guard informs that the casino boat 'Escapade' is moored at its homeport and is no longer aground in Calibogue Sound near Tybee Island, Georgia. Watchstanders at Coast Guard Station Tybee Island were notified the Escapade had ran aground with 94 passengers and 31 staff and crewmembers aboard during the ship’s maiden voyage. Coast Guard crews from Station Tybee Island, Coast Guard Air Station Savannah, Georgia, and the Coast Guard Cutters Tarpon and Maria Bray worked together to take off 118 passengers and non-essential crew and staff from the Escapade. The Coast Guard rescued three mariners from a sinking fishing vessel Saturday in the vicinity of Calibogue Sound, S.C., January 12. Watchstanders in the Coast Guard Sector Charleston command center received a report from Beaufort County Dispatch stating the 62-foot fishing vessel Christina Leigh was taking on water, at 3 p.m. The three mariners aboard had to place the call via cell phone since their VHF radio was damaged. Sector Charleston personnel put out an Urgent Marine Information Broadcast and launched crewmembers from Coast Guard Station Tybee Island at 3:04 p.m. A crew aboard a rescue helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Savannah was also launched. The helicopter crew arrived on scene and located the vessel at 4 p.m.

Members of Coast Guard Station Tybee Island held a ceremony at the station Tuesday to recognize the arrival of their newest response boat. Along with the Station Tybee Island crew, members from Coast Guard Sector Charleston, the Coast Guard Auxiliary, the mayor of Savannah, Ga., the pro tempore mayor of Tybee and representatives from local agencies attended the ceremony. Following the official proceedings, guests were invited to go aboard the Response Boat-Medium and view the new vessel.

The Coast Guard is investigating the grounding of an 859-foot container ship on the Savannah River, Wednesday. Savannah Pilots reported the UASC Khor Fakkan, an 859-foot container ship, had run aground near Elba Island during inbound transit up the Savannah River at approximately 4 a.m., Wednesday. Coast Guard Sector Charleston established a safety zone with a rescue boat crew from Coast Guard Station Tybee Island, Ga., until the vessel was refloated at approximately 6:40 a.m.

The Coast Guard is responding to an oil spill approximately nine-miles offshore of Savannah after a tank ship punctured a hole in its double-hulled fuel tank during the deployment of the ship's anchor Sept. 27. The Singapore based tank ship, Stolt Vision, reportedly sustained a rupture to the starboard fuel tank located beneath the water surface while lowering its anchor at approximately 5:50 p.m. Sept. 27. A Coast Guard helicopter crew from Air Station Savannah conducted an over flight of the area at approximately 8:00 p.m., and confirmed an oil sheen approximately two-miles long and 60-feet wide. Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit Savannah, Station Tybee Island, Ga., and Air Station Savannah are responding to the incident.

A Coast Guard helicopter crew from Air Station Savannah rescued two boaters at 1:45 p.m. after they were forced to jump into the water when their vessel caught fire seven miles southeast of Tybee Island, Ga., today. Rescue coordinators from Coast Guard Group Charleston, S.C., diverted the helicopter crew, which was returning from a previous missions in Charleston and also launched a small boat from Station Tybee, Ga., to respond to the vessel fire. Wallace Thomas Jr, and Thomas Wright were located immediately by the Savannah helicopter crew. Both boaters were forced to abandon ship to avoid flames which had completely engulfed their 30 foot recreationaal boat. Each of the survivors were hoisted by the Coast Guard air crew and taken to Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah.
