INS Sunayna Enters Abu Dhabi

The Indian Naval Offshore Patrol Vessel INS Sunayna, a state-of-the-art front line platform of the Indian Navy is on an Overseas Deployment to Abu Dhabi to participate in the International Defence Expo 2017 (IDEX 17) and Naval Defence and Maritime Security Exhibition 2017 (NAVDEX 17) in Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates). The ship entered Mina Zayad port, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates on 18th Feburary 2017. INS Sunayna will be participating in various events as part of IDEX 17 and will also utilise this opportunity to foster stronger relations with other friendly navies participating in IDEX 17 / NAVDEX 17. Built is Goa Shipyard Limited, INS Sunayna, is a fine example of India’s warship building capability and the promotes ‘Make in India’ concepts in the international exhibitions.

Gard Alert: Red Sea Security Warning

The conflict in Yemen is reportedly escalating and maritime authorities continue to urge vessels in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden region to operate in a heightened state of alert. The conflict in Yemen is escalating and two missile attacks on vessels operating off the coast of Yemen have now been reported. The first attack occurred on 1 October 2016 and targeted a vessel operated by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) military; the second occurred on 9 October 2016 and targeted a US Navy vessel. The most likely targets in the region are still considered to be military vessels, however, commercial vessels transiting the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait may face increased risk of collateral damage and must continue to operate in a heightened state of alert.

UAE Calls Houthi Ship Attack an Act of Terrorism

The United Arab Emirates said on Wednesday Yemeni Houthi forces had attacked a UAE civilian vessel in a strategic Red Sea shipping lane off the coast of Yemen at the weekend and called the incident an act of terrorism. The UAE foreign ministry, in a statement carried by state news agency WAM, said the civilian ship was targeted by Houthi militia near the Bab al-Mandab strait off Yemen's southern coast on Saturday. "The targeting of the civilian ship in an international channel has serious implications for freedom of navigation, and is an act of terror...," it said, without elaborating. In a statement on Saturday the Houthis said their forces had fired a missile that had destroyed a UAE military vessel that was advancing towards the Red Sea port of Al-Mokha.

ADSB To Start Navy Contract

Abu Dhabi Ship Building Company (ADSB) is preparing to start work on building six missile patrol boats ordered by the United Arab Emirates navy. William Saltzer, marketing and contracts manager at ADSB, said the firm expects to start work on the first vessel as soon as the contract was signed, which he said was expected before the end of the year. "We'll start as soon as the contract is signed. The intention is to sign before the end of this year," Saltzer said. "We are working together with the UAE navy to finalize the contract details and conducting planning activities," he added. A UAE military spokesman on Thursday announced that the UAE has awarded ADSB a contract to build six missile patrol boats for its navy.
