ABB Turbocharging Tops Industry Efficiency Benchmark

ABB Turbocharging has raised the industry benchmark for low-speed turbocharging efficiency to achieve an additional turbocharger efficiency increase of 2 percent by performing the measurement on an actual engine on an engine testbed. As a performance yardstick for low-speed turbochargers, the industry applies the turbocharger effi-ciency benchmark given by MAN Diesel & Turbo, a leading global low-speed engine designer. ABB Tur-bocharging has now proven an exceptional 2% higher efficiency compared to this industry standard. MHI Seeks to Integrate Marine Diesel Engine Businesses

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI), its wholly owned subsidiary Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Marine Machinery & Engine Co., Ltd. (MHI-MME), and Kobe Diesel Co., Ltd. have concluded a basic agreement to pursue integration of the marine diesel engine operations of MHI-MME and Kobe Diesel. Based on this, the three parties will seek to reach agreement on the terms of the integration by a target date of late December. This will be followed by the signing of the final agreement by early February, 2017. Once all necessary approvals have been acquired from the competent authorities, the three-parties will aim to complete the integration process by April 2017. MHI shipped its very first diesel engines—the independently developed proprietary “UE” engine series—in 1955.

Ulstein Implements Organizational Changes

Naming and organizational changes are underway in the Ulstein Group companies in the Netherlands. As of August 1, 2015, the ship design company Ulstein Sea of Solutions has been renamed Ulstein Design & Solutions BV (UDS BV), while the equipment company Ulstein Idea Equipment Solutions has been renamed Ulstein Equipment BV (UE BV). Edwin van Leeuwen and Gilbert Rezette enter positions as managing directors of the respective companies. Furthermore the holding company for the Ulstein Group activities in the Netherlands has been renamed into Ulstein Netherlands in which Sigurd Viseth takes position as managing director. He will also on behalf of Ulstein become Chairman of the Board in the Dutch companies.

First UEC50LSH-Eco Marine Diesel Engine Ordered

The first order for UEC50LSH-Eco low-speed marine diesel engine being developed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Marine Machinery & Engine Co., Ltd. (MHI-MME), a group company of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd., was placed with Kobe Diesel Co., Ltd., a licensee of Mitsubishi UE engine technology located in Hyogo, Japan. The advanced low-fuel-consumption engine will ensure high efficiency even during slow steaming, and will be installed on a 35k chemical tanker being built by Shin Kurushima Dockyard Co., Ltd.

CIMAC Set for Shanghai

The International Council on Combustion Engines (CIMAC) in collaboration with the Chinese Society for International Combustion Engines (CSICE) will host the 27th World Congress on Combustion Engine Technology. MHI Receives Order for NYK Line

Pure car and truck carrier delivered by MHI to NYK Line

Designed to Achieve 30% Reduction in Fuel Consumption Per Car. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI), jointly with Imabari Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., has received an order to build two next-generation pure car and truck carriers (PCTC) for Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK Line). Formal contract signing will take place soon. In building the two vessels, MHI will provide Imabari with design information on PCTC incorporating advanced ship technologies, including installation of various devices and systems to reduce environmental burdens, such as the Mitsubishi Air Lubrication System (MALS).

Through this licensing arrangement MHI seeks to further accelerate penetration of the Mitsubishi-UE engines in Korea, which has a near 35% share in the world's shipbuilding market, and other countries; it also aims to enhance its collaborative relationship with HHI, looking to boost the low-speed marine diesel engines' share in the global market. Specifically the new agreement grants licensing privileges to HHI to manufacture, sell and service Mitsubishi-UE LSE and LSE-Eco series engines with cylinder bores of between 350 to 800 millimeters (mm).

Trelleborg Gets Big Fender Order for Qatar New Port

After five years spent working closely with the construction company, Trelleborg has secured the $24.5 million (€19.5million) contract. The deal is approximately three times larger than any other marine fender contract previously placed and is due for delivery commencing at the end of 2012 and completion in early 2015. The $7.1billion (€5.8billion) value port project is currently the world's largest greenfield port-development project. Trelleborg will supply the New Port Project with 829 fender systems, including 557 super cone fenders for the port’s marine services terminal, container terminals (one is part of phase one, and two further terminals ready for future development), flour mill and main vehicle terminal.

YMD of China Completes First Mitsubishi-UE Engine

Yichang Marine Diesel Engine Co., Ltd. (YMD), a group company of China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (CSIC), has completed production of its first Mitsubishi-UE low-speed marine diesel engine under a technology licensing arrangement with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI). YMD, located in Yichang, Hubei Province, is expected to complete three more Mitsubishi-UE engines within this year, with plans calling for progressive expansion of engine production going forward. The first Mitsubishi-UE engine completed by YMD is the 6UEC43LSII, featuring a power output of 6,300 kW or 8,580 PS (pferdestarke) at 160 rpm (revolutions per minute).

MHI Licenses 3rd Chinese Company

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) and Zhejiang Yungpu Heavy Machinery Co., Ltd. (YUNGPU) in China's Zhejiang Province agreed last December on licensing of the technology incorporated into the Mitsubishi-UE, MHI's low-speed marine diesel engines. The licensing became effective late last month. YUNGPU is the third Chinese company to be licensed Mitsubishi-UE engine technology. YUNGPU plans to complete manufacture and delivery of the first unit by the end of this year. The engines licensed to YUNGPU are the UEC37LSII and UEC33LSII, small-size marine diesels with cylinder bores of 370 and 330 millimeters (mm), respectively. Under the licensing agreement YUNGPU can manufacture, sell and provide after-sale services for engines in China.

Wärtsilä, CSIC, Mitsubishi New Chinese Factory

Wärtsilä, China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (CSIC) and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) inaugurated their new, jointly owned, low-speed marine engine factory QMD in Qingdao, Shandong province. The state-of-the-art QMD factory features a modern welding shop, machine shop, assembly shop, and a testing shop, as well as facilities for heat treatment, blasting and painting. This engine production factory has automated equipment and processes, the flexible use of test beds, and the possibility to test two large engines at full load in parallel.

MHI, Wärtsilä Agree on Engine Development

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) and Wärtsilä Corporation of Finland have signed a joint development agreement on May 15, 2008 to design and develop new small, low-speed marine diesel engines of less than 450 mm cylinder bore. The two companies see good business potential in pooling their resources and experience to develop new small marine engines of less than 450 millimetre (mm) cylinder bore. Such engines are suitable for a wide variety of small ship types, including bulk carriers, product tankers, chemical tankers, container feeder vessels, and reefer ships. Such ships are employed in worldwide trades but with the smaller types being specifically employed in short-sea and coastal services.

Transocean Sets Depth Record

Transocean Inc. said that the its jackup GSF Rig 127 set a world record for the longest extended-reach well ever drilled at 40,320 ft. (12,289 m) MD (measured depth) with a 35,770-ft. (10,902-m) horizontal section. The well was drilled offshore Qatar in 36 days and incident-free. The new record of 7.6 miles is also the first well in the history of offshore drilling that exceeds 40,000 ft. (12,191 m). The well surpasses by approximately 2,000 ft. the prior extended-reach record of 38,322 ft. (11,680 m) MD set by another drilling contractor with a land rig drilling at Sakhalin Island earlier this year. The rig's crewmembers, working with the client, Maersk Oil Qatar AS, overcame many constraints, including high drilling torque throughout certain parts of the horizontal section.

Resilient Dutch Network

As a bastion of ship production in the under 10,000-dwt-vessel range, the industry in the northern Netherlands continues to demonstrate true global competitiveness in its chosen fields of endeavor. While much of European shipbuilding bewails the intensified onslaught from the Orient, impinging on an ever-greater range of ship types and ever-widening circle of European shipowning communities, the yards and allied firms in the northernmost Dutch provinces are putting down building blocks in new market areas. Key points of the investment-underwritten drive to increase market reach and develop business volume are a push towards larger vessels, up to 20,000-dwt in some cases, and the forging of new relationships with builders in Eastern Europe.

MHI, VINASHIN Sign Licensing Agreement

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) signed an agreement to license its UE low-speed diesel engine technology to Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (VINASHIN). Under the agreement, MHI will provide VINASHIN with the licensing rights to manufacture its large-sized diesel engines. The contract applies specifically to the Mitsubishi UEC-LA, LA, LSII and LSE engines with cylinder bores ranging from 330 to 680 mm. The agreement also encompasses marketing and servicing of these engines in Vietnam. The period of licensing is from 2005 to 2014.

Wärtsilä, MHI to Develop New Diesel Engine by 2004

Wärtsilä Corporation and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) will together develop a new 500-600 mm cylinder bore engine, with the ambitious goal of having the first unit ready for delivery in 4Q 2004. The development perhaps ushers in a new era of cooperation amongst major equipment suppliers, which continually search for innovative means to keep product lines up to date while simultaneously keeping a lid on soaring new product development costs. According to Mikael Mäkinen, Wärtsilä group vice president, Marine Division, the development costs for the engine will be shared equally, and the engine will be marketed and sold separately, branded with both the Mitsubishi and Sulzer name.

Wärtsilä and MHI to Form Alliance

Wärtsilä Corporation and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd (MHI) have signed an agreement for an alliance in the field of two-stroke diesel engines. The two companies will share their resources and experience for improved business. Various possibilities will be explored in research and development as well as in the efficiency of production and distribution of jointly developed two-stroke diesel engines. The alliance will be led by a Steering Committee. The Chairman of the Steering committee is a representative of Wärtsilä and the Vice Chairman is a representative of MHI. Wärtsilä and MHI both have wide portfolios of low-speed, two-stroke diesel engines. Wärtsilä's RTA and RT-flex engines cover the power range of 5000 to 80,000 kW and MHI's UE engines the range of 1,120 to 46,800 kW.
