EU-backed Project Targets Improved Fuel Efficiency

A consortium of maritime industry and academic partners have been awarded EU funding for a project aimed at reducing fuel consumption and lowering emission levels for shipping.The SeaTech project consortium, led by technology group Wärtsilä, has been formed to develop two symbiotic ship engine and propulsion innovations that when combined, could lead to a 30% reduction in fuel consumption. Tuco Delivers Workboat for Autonomous Ship Research Program

UiT, The Arctic University of Norway takes over new ProZero Workboat for its Autonomous Ships Navigation research program.The ProZero 8m Full Cabin Service Boat is outfitted and utilized as a fast and flexible multi mission workboat, and is purchased from ProZero of Denmark, after an extensive tendering process. Hydroacoustic Package for Norwegian Icebreaker

The new RV Kronprins Haakon, the first Norwegian Icebreaker built for Polar research, and the first purpose built polar research vessel since Roald Amundsen’s Maud launched in 1917, will start regular science cruises in 2017 with a complete hydroacoustic systems package from Kongsberg Maritime. Builder Fincantieri has selected a combined delivery of Kongsberg Maritime survey technology, including a wide range of Simrad scientific research systems for the Kronprins Haakon. Madsen to Chair Norway’s Research Council Executive Board

Henrik O. DNV GL president and CEO Henrik O. Madsen was appointed as chairman of the executive board of the Research Council of Norway. The executive board is the Research Council’s highest authority, and the newly appointed board will commence Jan 1. 2015. The main functions of the Research Council of Norway is to provide strategic policy input, administer research funding and serve as a meeting place for the development of research policy and dissemination of knowledge in Norway.

Kongsberg Upgrade Simulators for UiT, Norway

Kongsberg Maritime says that UiT, The Artic University of Norway, has contracted them to provide cutting-edge upgrades and extensions of existing ship's bridge simulators for navigation and DP training including human factor studies. UiT's strong focus on maritime and offshore training, human factor studies and R&D projects strengthens knowledge and competence in Advanced Operations in the polar environment. Kongsberg explain that the Arctic is of increasing global importance and is very much in focus within the offshore and shipping industries. Climate change, the exploitation of Arctic resources and environmental threats are topics of great public concern, and which the UiT takes special interest in.

HydroComp Celebrates 25 Years

Twenty-five years ago HydroComp was formed with a mission to provide naval architects and ship builders with resistance and propulsion analysis solutions. HydroComp was formed as a corporation in 1984 by Jill Aaron, Managing Director, and Donald MacPherson, Technical Director. This partnership continues to direct HydroComp's evolution and growth. HydroComp now serves software customers and consulting clients in over 50 countries. NavCad is still HydroComp's flagship product, with users in all corners of the world from design to construction to academia. In addition to NavCad, HydroComp's software products grew to include PropExpert, PropCad, and SwiftCraft programs for propeller sizing & analysis, propeller CAD, and resistance and powering.
