68 People Found in Container at Harwich Port

Men and women of a range of different nationalities were found inside the locked container at Harwich International Port, UK last night. Border police are set to quiz sixty-eight suspected illegal immigrants who were found crammed in the shipping container. Seven people were rushed to hospital and 61 others assessed at the scene by paramedics, who received a tip-off at around 10pm. Two pregnant women were among them. The remaining 61 have been assessed and handed to UK Border Agency officials. The nationalities of those people are not known but the 68 people are believed to have been shipped from Holland. "Although the container is understood to have come from Holland, the people inside were from various different countries," say sources.

Third Damen Stan Patrol for Mexican Navy

The Mexican Navy contracted Damen Shipyards Group for the design and material package of a Damen Stan Patrol 4207, including technical assistance. Construction of the vessel will start in the summer of 2013 at ASTIMAR 1 (Tampico), one of the five naval shipyards of Astilleros de la Secretaría de Marina. The vessels are designed to perform patrolduties in designated areas. Other clients who operate similar vessels in the region include navies and coast guards of Jamaica, Barbados, the Dutch Caribbean, Honduras and the Canadian Coast Guard.

Vibration Mitigation on Fast Craft

The professional maritime sector recognizes the need to reduce the effects of Whole Body Vibration (WBV) but this is not a straightforward process for those operating planing craft. These vessels can expose crews and passengers to high levels of repeated shock and vibration which has been shown to increase the risk of injury. In flat sea conditions there is vibration from the engine, gearbox and shaft but the crew and passengers are not exposed to harmful vibration. All fast boat operators know that waves change everything.

Babcock Completes Refit of UK Border Agency Vessel

Babcock has successfully competed the first UK Border Agency vessel refit under a five year support contract won by the company earlier this year. Babcock was awarded the contract by the UK Border Agency in June 2011, to provide through-life maintenance and support for the Agency’s fleet of five patrol boats (known as ‘cutters’); Sentinel, Searcher, Seeker, Vigilant and Valiant. Under the contract each ship will undergo a docking period every two years and annual Life Saving Appliances (LSA) periods, taking one week, alongside.

UK MCA Detains Ship in Liverpool

On Friday 14th November the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) detained a vessel in Liverpool. The Panamian flag 41,016 GT bulk carrier Pistis had berthed in Liverpool to discharge a cargo of grain and was boarded by surveyors from the MCAs Liverpool Marine Office, who arrived to conduct an overriding priority Inspection following information received from the UK Border Agency.
