Stena Bulk Doubles Medium Range Fleet with Danish Merger

Stena Bulk is increasing its MR segment (Medium Range product tankers of 50,000 dwt) by acquiring 50 percent of the Danish shipping company Weco. This means that Stena Bulk has doubled its fleet in this segment from 15 to 30 tankers. Its objective over the next couple of years is to build up an operation with upwards of 50 vessels under the new brand name of Stena Weco. Weco, which is part of the privately owned shipping group Dannebrog, is a market leader in the transportation of special-type products such as palm oils, edible oils and caustic soda. Weco currently operates some 15 vessels with peaks of 30-35 vessels, including short-term charters. “This is in line with our new investment in worldwide MR operation with a greater focus on cargoes of edible oils.

Stena Bulk, Sonangol Suezmax Pool Reinforced

Stena Bulk and the Angolan oil company Sonangol strengthen the Stena Sonangol Suezmax Pool with the addition of a further two ultramodern tankers. “These tankers will be added to the pool, which is fully controlled by Stena Bulk and Sonangol. The pool now has a total of 18 tankers and there will be 30 tankers at mid 2012 as our ultramodern newbuildings continue to be delivered,” said Ulf G. Ryder, CEO and President of Stena Bulk. The M/T Mare Doricum was added to the pool in January 2011, followed by M/T Mare Picenum in February. Both these 158,000 dwt Suezmax tankers were built at Samsung Shipyard in South Korea in 2009. Their owner is the well-reputed Italian shipping company Fratelli d’Amico Amatori, which owns and operates a fleet of 11 crude oil tankers.

Unique Ship Prototype in Gothenburg

The 49.2 ft long ship prototype Stena Airmax was named in Gothenburg. The prototype is part of a project in which an air cushion is being tested to investigate to what extent it reduces the friction between the hull and the water, thus also reducing fuel consumption and emissions of large tankers in the future. Stena will invest in the region of $6.8m in the project. Following the very good results achieved in tests with small ship models, Stena Teknik has developed this large-scale model weighing 25 tons. The same tests will now be carried out with the Stena Airmax.

Sonangol, Stena Bulk start Panamax Pool

Stena Bulk and Sonangol expanded their shipping collaboration and are now also operating a pool with Panamax tankers. These vessels transport crude oil and petroleum products in Atlantic trade as well as sailing in a round-the-world service. Initially, the pool consists of five Panamax tankers but the aim is to expand it over the next few years to ten vessels by means of purchases or charters. “This new venture is a direct spinoff from the successful collaboration involving a Suezmax pool, which Stena Bulk and Sonangol have been operating for some years. The aim is the same – to enhance efficiency and thus increase revenue”, says Ulf G. Ryder, President and CEO of Stena Bulk.

The product tankers Stena Poseidon and Palva, which are jointly owned by Concordia Maritime and Neste Oil on a 50-50 basis, will be named today. The double naming ceremony will be held at Brodosplit Shipyard in Split. The two vessels are so-called Panamax tankers, i.e. they are designed to be able to pass through the narrow passages in the Panama Canal’s locks. In addition, they have been built to Ice Class 1 A specifications, which means that they are well suited for service in icy waters. Neste Oil has chartered both tankers for 10 years. The vessels’ godmothers are Mrs. Ainomaija Haarla and Mrs. Maarit Toivanen-Koivisto, respectively. Attendees at the ceremony include Hans Norén, President of Concordia Maritime, Ulf G.
