Rolls-Royce, ZF Strengthen Propulsion Ties

An agreement between ZF Friedrichshafen AG and Rolls-Royce Power Systems will see the two companies collaborate even more closely on the development, marketing, sales and service of marine propulsion systems. The combination of MTU engines from Rolls-Royce Power Systems and marine transmissions from ZF have long been a match for many commercial ships and yachts. Now, the two companies plan to work together even more intensively to develop new technologies and products to help ensure clients are provided with fully optimized propulsion solutions.

Schell, Appointed CEO, Rolls-Royce Power Systems

Rolls-Royce announces today that Andreas Schell has been appointed as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Rolls-Royce Power Systems (RRPS). Andreas will join Rolls-Royce later this year, reporting to Chief Executive Warren East, and take up his new position from 1 January 2017, succeeding Dr Ulrich Dohle who is retiring. Andreas has a wealth of international leadership expertise, running large complex organisations involved in high-technology engineering across a number of sectors including aerospace and automotive in Germany, the UK and US. He has experience in operational transformation programmes, strategy and the development of new business models, products and markets.

Rolls-Royce Unveils MTU Gas Marine Engine

MTU’s new gas engine for commercial marine applications – the first from Rolls-Royce – has undergone some 3,000 hours on the test bench and is now ready to enter series production as the first high-speed pure-gas marine engine. “We can now confirm that the engine meets both our requirements and those of our customers: its performance and its acceleration behavior are similar to the excellent characteristics of a diesel engine,” said Dr. Ulrich Dohle, CEO of Rolls-Royce Power Systems AG.

Beckmeyer Visits Rolls-Royce's MTU Research

Uwe Beckmeyer, Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy paid a visit to MTU Reman Technologies in Magdeburg to find out more about the company’s development operations in the maritime sector. The important role the Rolls-Royce subsidiary plays in shipping is in fact a two-fold one. Beckmeyer, who also acts as Federal Government Coordinator for the maritime industry said, "The use of gas engines in maritime applications will continue to grow in significance. Against the background of the energy turnaround in Germany, the Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy supports research into alternative drive systems. Beckmeyer was accompanied on his visit by Andreas Steppuhn, the parliamentary party leader of the social democrats in Saxony-Anhalt.

Sr Management Restructuring at Rolls Royce

Rolls-Royce is today announcing a new senior management structure as the first step in the wide-ranging restructuring announced on 12 November 2015. The move will simplify the organisation, drive operational excellence and reduce cost; ensuring Rolls-Royce is better placed to deliver long-term profitable growth. The current divisional structure of Aerospace and Land & Sea will end, removing a layer of senior management. From 1 January 2016, Rolls-Royce will operate as five market facing businesses, with the Presidents of Civil Aerospace, Defence Aerospace, Marine, Nuclear and Power Systems reporting directly to the Chief Executive. Our Civil Aerospace business will comprise of our merged Civil Large Engines (CLE) and our Civil Small and Medium Engines (CSME) businesses.

Rolls-Royce Showcases MTU's Drive System

Winfried Hermann, Minister of Transport and Infrastructure of Germany’s federal state of Baden-Württemberg, paid a visit to Rolls-Royce Power Systems in Friedrichshafen, where he was keen to learn about eco-friendly drive concepts for rail transport. MTU's Hybrid Powerpack was one of the technologies shown to him by company CEO Ulrich Dohle. Hybrid Powerpacks consume up to 25 percent less fuel than conventional state-of-the-art diesel drive systems, and are also quieter to run and emit less CO2. MTU is part of Rolls-Royce Power Systems within the Land & Sea division of Rolls-Royce.

Parliamentary Under Secretary Beckmeyer Visits Rolls-Royce

Uwe Beckmeyer, Parliamentary Under Secretary of the Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy, visited Rolls-Royce Power Systems AG in Friedrichshafen. Dr. Ulrich Dohle, company CEO who also chairs the MTU Friedrichshafen subsidiary, explained the low-emission diesel engines of the future. MTU is part of Rolls-Royce Power Systems within the Land & Sea division of Rolls-Royce. MTU's engine portfolio was presented to Under Secretary Beckmeyer in a tour of the Training Centre and Assembly Shop. Beckmeyer is the German government's coordinator for the maritime industry.

Rolls-Royce Power Systems informs it is investing in the development of the next generation of ecological sound and cost efficient combustion engines at MTU, a brand in the Rolls-Royce Land & Sea division. With the first new test stands entering service today in Friedrichshafen, MTU’s lead site and main R&D location, Rolls-Royce said it has invested some 40 million euros in the new testing facilities at MTU. "This move is making space for new developments in every sense of the word.

Rolls-Royce LNG Engines Reach 25 Million Operating Hours

Rolls-Royce engines powered solely by liquefied natural gas (LNG) have completed 25 million hours of operation on land and at sea, since their introduction in 1991. More than 650 Bergen lean burn gas engines are in service today, with a power output up to 9,600kW. The engines are used for a variety of applications ranging from powering ferries, cargo ships and tugs to a wide range of land-based power generation throughout the world. Rolls-Royce today announced the completion of its acquisition of Rolls-Royce Power Systems (RRPS). The move follows an announcement made on March 7, 2014 that the Board of Management of Daimler AG had decided to exercise the put option relating to its 50% equity interest in RRPS and the announcement on April 16, 2014 that Rolls-Royce and Daimler had agreed on a fair market valuation for the shareholding of €2.43 billion. Damen, MTU & SVITZER to Launch World’s 1st RSD CNG Tug

Three leading companies have teamed up to bring the first ever Reverse Stern Drive (RSD) Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) tug to the market. Damen Shipyards of the Netherlands, German engine manufacturer MTU Friedrichshafen, a subsidiary of Rolls-Royce Power Systems, and Denmark’s SVITZER have embarked on the pioneering project with the official launch of the new eco-friendly tug planned for 2016. The new RSD CNG tug combines high power with lower fuel costs and a substantial reduction in emissions. Martijn Smit, Damen Sales Manager Europe, says: “Damen is proud to be building the prototype. Tognum Now under Rolls-Royce Power Systems Name

Effective immediately, the former Tognum AG will now operate under the name of Rolls-Royce Power Systems AG.

Effective immediately, the former Tognum AG will now operate under the name of Rolls-Royce Power Systems AG. Since March 2013, the specialist for large engines, propulsion systems and distributed energy systems has been a wholly-owned subsidiary of Rolls-Royce plc and Daimler AG, each of which has a 50% shareholding in the company via a joint venture. The group of companies with MTU Friedrichshafen GmbH as the core company has been consolidated in the Rolls-Royce Group’s results since the beginning of 2013.

Dr. Ulrich Dohle New Head of Tognum

As announced in April, Dr Ulrich Dohle today takes up his new duties as Chairman of the Executive Board and CEO of Tognum AG. He succeeds Joachim Coers, who has left the company after nine years at his own request. In his new role, Dr Dohle will not only take on the typical duties of a CEO, such as corporate communication and strategy, but will also be responsible for R&D and quality management. In April, the Supervisory Board extended Dr Dohle's contract until December 31, 2015. He has been on the Executive Board of Tognum AG since 2009, previously holding the position of deputy CEO and CTO. One priority of the Executive Board's work will be to expand operations worldwide. At the same time, cooperation with Rolls-Royce and Daimler is to be intensified.

The Chairman of the Executive Board & CEO of Tognum AG, Joachim Coers, to hand over to Dr. Ulrich Dohle from July 1st, 2013. The Supervisory Board of Tognum AG regretted the decision taken by Coers, which they have accepted, and thanked him for his exceptional dedication and commitment in the past nine years. In its meeting on April 19th, the Supervisory Board elected Dr. Dohle unanimous as new Chairman of the Executive Board and CEO of Tognum AG and at the same time extended his contract to 31 December 2015. Joachim Coers joined what was then MTU Friedrichshafen in 2004.

Tognum Makes Large Investments

2012-2014: Investment of more than one billion euros in plant expansion and R&D; Publication of Annual Report 2012 announced. The specialist for propulsion and power solutions Tognum intends to invest more than one billion euros by the end of 2014. This amount exceeds the volume that Tognum specified in a cornerstone paper together with Daimler AG and Rolls-Royce plc two years ago. Approximately €600 million of the total investment will flow into each of research and development and long-term capital expenditure.

Tognum Opens MTU Material Management Center

Tognum CTO Dr. Ulrich Dohle opened the facility situated in the Friedrichshafen district of Kluftern near Lake Constance. Over the next few months, the MMC will be entirely responsible for supplying parts to Friedrichshafen manufacturing plants and will later extend its activities to take in other production facilities in the international network. Tognum, a provider of propulsion and power solutions, and its new partner Stute Logistics, the Kühne + Nagel subsidiary that is operating the warehouse, together invested around 50 million euros in the ultra-modern Materials Management Center.

Tognum Inaugurates New Research Facility

Tognum is conducting research on diesel and gas engines of the future at its `SKL Motor´ subsidiary in Magdeburg. Saxony-Anhalt‘s Minister-President Dr. Reiner Haseloff presided over a symbolic ceremony at which four new single-cylinder test stands went into operation. The facilities will be used by the company’s specialists to develop new combustion processes, fuels and combustion chamber geometries for the development of engines at the Friedrichshafen location of the Tognum brand MTU.

Tognum to Reduce Size of Executive Board

In January 2011, the first step taken by Tognum to establish a new global sales organisation came into force. The new organization is designed to improve the service and support provided for the company’s existing customers and above all to acquire new customers worldwide for its broadly diversified product portfolio. Peter Kneipp (53) joined MTU Friedrichshafen in 1989 as a project manager for marine propulsion systems. At an early stage in his career, Peter Kneipp was involved in projects that enabled him to acquire experience in the Asia-Pacific region, where he has worked since 1997 until the end of 2010. He initially spent several years in Singapore, where he was mainly involved in customer service and after sales.

Tognum to Invest $40 Million in Expansion of Aiken Plant

Tognum, the specialist for propulsion and power solutions, will expand its Aiken Plant for MTU engines and add 20 new jobs over the next two years. The $40 million expansion project is made possible in part by the support of Aiken County, S.C., and the State of South Carolina. The investment follows Tognum’s initial commitment of $45 million in plant renovations and expansion, and is part of the company’s ongoing plans to increase its footprint in North America. Diesel engine propulsion and power manufacturerTognum, will expand its Aiken Plant for MTU engines and add 20 new jobs over the next two years. The $40 million expansion project is made possible in part by the support of Aiken County, S.C. and the State of South Carolina. Tognum Honors Best Suppliers

This is the seventh year that Tognum has given accolades for outstanding achievements, but the first year in which there have been five categories. The awards were presented by Dr. Ulrich Dohle, Tognum executive board member responsible for Technology & Operations, and Erik Manning, head of purchasing at Tognum, accompanied by the relevant departmental managers. “The Supplier Award is a mark of outstanding achievement and quality,” Dohle emphasized. For the second year in succession, the award for best supplier of finished parts was won by Maschinenfabrik Spaichingen from Baden-Württemberg (Germany). They have been supplying the Tognum Group with control elements for MTU Series 4000 engines for many years.
