Carnival Retrofits Fleet with VDR Systems

L-3 SAM Electronics has retrofitted Carnival Cruise Lines’ fleet of 24 ships with its Voyage Data Recorder (VDR 4350) system. L-3 SAM Electronics’ VDR 4350 system provides extended recording time and ECDIS-based onboard and onshore replay features, together with options for remote control and maintenance via SATCOM. The modular Ethernet-based VDR 4350 series provides a comprehensive backup capability for the storage and downloading of recorded data. Other features include extended graphics analysis tools that provide simplified export functions to standard Microsoft Office applications.

L-3 MSI Supplies Navigation for the Oasis Class

L-3 Marine Systems International (L-3 MSI) has been awarded a contract to provide its NACOS Platinum navigation system, including an integrated dynamic positioning system, for the third ship in Royal Caribbean International’s (RCI) Oasis class, built by STX France at its shipyard in Saint-Nazaire. The 362-meter-long, 227,700-gross-ton ship, with a capacity of 6,360 passengers and a crew of 2,100, will be among the world’s largest cruise liners, together with its sister vessels, the Oasis of the Seas and the Allure of the Seas, and is slated for delivery in spring 2016.

L-3 MSI to Equip Third Quantum Class Ship

L-3 Marine Systems International (L-3 MSI) announced today that it has been awarded a contract to provide a range of navigation, lighting and communication systems for the third ship in Royal Caribbean International’s Quantum class. Built by Meyer Werft at its Papenburg shipyard in northern Germany, the 348-metre-long, 158,000-gross-ton ship is the sister vessel to Quantum of the Seassm, due to be delivered this year, and Anthem of the Seassm, to be launched in 2015, both of which have been similarly outfitted with L-3 equipment. “The three-ship project marks the next step in L-3’s growing support of the world’s premier cruise ship fleets with proven, cutting-edge shipboard system solutions,” said Ulrich Weinreuter, president of L-3 Marine Systems International.

SMM 2014 Witnesses Record Turnout

SMM was another full success. With more than 2,100 exhibitors from all around the world, including 150 first-timers, with 50,000 industry visitors and roughly 90,000 square metres of exhibition space, SMM has demonstrated once again what it means to be the leading international trade fair of the maritime industry. After four days brimming with activity, the 26th SMM came to a close today. "We set new records this year," said Bernd Aufderheide, CEO and President of Hamburg Messe und Congress GmbH. "The excellent turnout not only showed that companies are ready to meet the current challenges with determination, but it also revealed a growing appreciation for collaboration," he added.

L-3 SAM Electronics Promotes Managing Directors

L-3 Marine Systems International (L-3 MSI) announced today the promotion of Armin Groth and Maik Stoevhase to managing directors of its L-3 SAM Electronics business. As managing directors, Groth and Stoevhase report to Ulrich Weinreuter, president of L-3 MSI. Having worked in the maritime industry for more than 24 years, Groth joined L-3 SAM Electronics in 2006 as managing director of its STN Schiffselektrik subsidiary before he took over SAM’s Integrated Systems business in 2009.

L-3 SAM Electrical Package for Pipelay Vessel

L-3 SAM Electronics announced today that it has been awarded a major contract to provide complete electrical packages, as well as integrated navigation, automation, communications, energy distribution and propulsion systems for Ceona Amazon, the 199-meter offshore construction and pipelaying vessel to be delivered this coming October to Ceona, a London-based subsea contracting organization. The turnkey supply work, which also includes all cabling installation, is to be carried out under contract to the vessel’s principal outfitter…

Senior L-3 European Appointments

L-3 Marine & Power Systems Group, whose members include SAM Electronics, has appointed Klaus Lorenz as Vice-President of its European Operations. Reporting to Steve Kantor, President of the $1.3b Group, he will be responsible for all its activities throughout Europe, including business development as well as customer and inter-divisional relationships. Formerly President of SAM Electronics, which was acquired by L-3 in 2006, Mr Lorenz has been associated with the marine industry for over 35 years, having also held senior management posts with ABB.
