Training Day: Cruden’s pioneering Fast Craft Simulator

Marine simulators are commonplace in the training and development of crew for large vessels. Not so much for small, fast patrol and attack craft. From the mid to late 1970s, marine simulators developed into a viable training tool for trainee mariners. Their initial popularity developed as opportunities for practical training became scarcer and a lot costlier, too. Since then, however, the advancement of the technology has brought a new dimension to professional crew training for small, fast craft.

Statoil Charters ULCC to Hold Crude for Asia buyers

Oil storage is feasible with low freight rates, capital costs; backwardation pushes traders to churn oil faster from storage. Norway's Statoil ASA has chartered the last remaining Ultra-Large Crude Carrier (ULCC), the world's largest oil tankers, to store oil off of Malaysia for distribution in smaller parcels to its clients in Asia, company executives said. Statoil has booked the TI Europe, capable of carrying up to 3 million barrels of oil, more than the daily consumption of South Korea, to reduce the time it takes for customers to ship their crude, Stale Endre Berg, senior vice president of crude and refining at Statoil, told Reuters on the sidelines of the APPEC conference.

Tankers to Store 25m Barrels of Oil At Sea

Oil traders have booked at least 12 tankers to store 25 million barrels of crude at sea in a further sign of a build-up in global stocks, reports Reuters. To take advantage of the crash in crude prices and make a profit down the line, floating storage levels are expected to increase further in coming weeks. The play is also driving up tanker hire rates, and shipping firms have seen their share prices surge in recent days. According to reports, at least 11 very large crude carriers (VLCCs) have been booked with storage options, rising from around five vessels at the end of last week. Separately, the Ti Oceania - one of the world's biggest oil tankers, known as an ultra-large crude carrier with a 3 million barrel capacity - has been booked to store crude, the data and market sources say.

Traders Book Oil Tankers to Store 25m Barrels at Sea

Some of the world's biggest oil traders have booked supertankers to store at least 25 million barrels at sea in recent days, seeking to take advantage of the crash in crude prices and make a profit down the line. Floating storage levels are expected to increase further in coming weeks as trading companies adopt a strategy that was last used in 2009 when prices slumped and led to over 100 million barrels of oil being parked on tankers at sea before stocks were sold off. The play is also driving up tanker hire rates, and shipping firms have seen their share prices surge in recent days. In the past week, trading firms including Trafigura…

Supertankers Buying Spree to Beat Oil Glut

Some of the world’s largest oil traders are reportedly hiring supertankers in a possible attempt to stockpile oil supplies following the plunge in world prices. Trading firms including Vitol, Trafigura and energy major Shell have all booked crude tankers for up to 12 months, Reuters said, quoting freight brokers and shipping sources. These companies have booked crude tankers for up to 12 months - taking advantage of some cheaper rates of hire. The idea is that by effectively parking large tankers full of oil offshore, oil owners can take advantage of cheap supplies and simply wait for prices to regain some strength. Costs have plunged more than 50% in the past six months as a result of a glut in supply and fears for world economic growth.

Damen Services Massive Crude Carrier

Damen Shiprepair Brest (France) returned the Ultra Large Crude Carrier (ULCC) TI Europe to its owners EURONAV (Belgium) after completing a full technical survey and service. The sheer size of the vessel represents a considerable challenge in itself, he says, with the shipyard applying more than 46,000 square meters of silicon paint. However, the yard can comfortably accommodate such vessels given that its largest drydock, at 420 x 80 meters, is one of the biggest in Europe. damen.com
