Russia Submits Vast Arctic Territory Claims to UN

Russia has submitted its bid for vast territories in the Arctic to the United Nations, AP reported as the Foreign Ministry saying. The ministry said in a statement that Russia is claiming 1.2 million square kilometres (over 463,000 square miles) of Artic sea shelf extending more than 350 nautical miles (about 650 kilometres) from the shore. It said the bid contains new arguments. “Ample scientific data collected in years of Arctic research are used to back the Russian claim,” it said. Moscow also is asserting ownership of the emerging Northern Sea Route, the potentially lucrative seasonal shipping route opening above its northern coastline as Arctic ice melts. Rivalry for Arctic resources has intensified as shrinking polar ice is opening up new opportunities for exploration.

Legally China Can't Claim South China Sea: Indonesia

Indonesian President Joko Widodo said China'a claims to the majority of the South China Sea have "no legal foundation in international law," he told Japan's Yomiuri newspaper. "We need peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region. It is important to have political and security stability to build up our economic growth," Widodo was quoted as saying. This was the first time Widodo, who took office in October, has taken a position on the South China Sea dispute. China has had occasionally tense confrontations with Japan and Southeast Asian countries - the Philippines and Vietnam in particular - over maritime disputes in the East China Sea and the South China Sea, respectively. "We need peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region.

Russia Conducts High North Geophysical Surveys

For the first time, as part of the Arctic-2014 high-latitude expedition, nuclear icebreakers 'Akademik Fedorov' and 'Yamal' have conducted an entire complex of geophysical research at the North Pole, according to official Russian news agency Arctic-info. Yamal and Akademik Fedorov icebreakers passed the area of the North Pole, where multipath depth sounding, gravity, magnetometric and seismic surveys were carried out. The vessels are now traveling to the West, and then they will come go down a little and will move to a different profile. The main purpose of the expedition is assessment of the hydrocarbon potential of the Russian shelf outside the 200-mile zone.

Russian Application to Extend its National Arctic Boundaries

In 2014, Russia plans to submit an application for extension of the boundaries of the continental Arctic Shelf to the special UN Commission after modifying and reinforcing the application by the results of additional research, reports 'Arctic info'. Citing remarks by Denis Khramov, Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Ecology of Russia, 'Arctic info' says that Russia had already applied for extension of the territories in the Barents, Bering and Okhotsk seas, as well as in the Central Arctic Ocean. The Commission generally recognized the application as meeting the requirements but requested the Russian Federation to provide an additional proof that the ranges of Lomonosov and Mendeleev…

Icebreaker Oden: Photo credit SWEDARCTIC

The expedition will be aboard the Swedish icebreaker “Oden”, as it leaves from Svalbard with 46 Swedish and Danish scientists who will gather seismic and depth data to substantiate a future possible claim to the United Nations before November 2014, reports 'Barents Observer'. Denmark has identified five potential claim areas off the Faroe Islands and Greenland - both parts of the Kingdom of Denmark. The expedition will try to find evidence that Greenland’s continental shelf stretches all the way to the North Pole and therefore should be considered as Danish.
