SC Ports Box Volumes Rise 10% in 2015
South Carolina Ports Authority (SCPA) posted 10 percent container growth in 2015, a year highlighted by strong volumes and significant progress on the harbor deepening project. SCPA handled 144,718 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in December, pushing total container volume to 1.97 million in 2015. As measured in pier containers, or total boxes handled, SCPA's two container terminals moved 1.12 million boxes in 2015, an increase of 9.54 percent over 1.02 million containers handled last year.
SC Ports Projects 7% Container Growth
Following a record-setting month of container volumes achieved in May, the South Carolina Ports Authority (SCPA) board of directors looked ahead to a favorable 2016 fiscal year today with the adoption of a financial plan that includes continued cargo growth, increased operating revenues and significant capital investments. SC Ports See 14% Container Volume Growth
SC Ports Authority sustained double-digit container volume gains in March, reporting 14.3 percent fiscal year to date growth of twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) over the same period last year. In March SCPA handled 171,113 TEUs, an increase of 13.7 percent compared to 150,516 TEUs moved during the same month last year. Fiscal year to date, the port has handled nearly 1.4 million TEUs. As measured in pier containers, or the total number of boxes handled, containerized cargo is up 15 percent fiscal year to date compared to last year. SCPA moved 97,191 boxes in March, bringing year fiscal to date pier container volume to nearly 798,000 boxes.
USCG Welcomes Cutter Hamilton to Fleet
Coast Guard Cutter Hamilton, the first national security cutter homeported on the East Coast, entered into active service today at Union Pier Terminal in downtown Charleston. The commissioning ceremony for the Coast Guard’s largest and newest 418-foot cutter was presided by Vice Adm. William “Dean” Lee, Coast Guard Atlantic Area commander. Commandant of the Coast Guard, Adm. Paul F. Zukunft, delivered the keynote address. “Together with my shipmates, we’re beginning the most important milestones in the life of a cutter,” said Capt. Doug Fears, Hamilton’s commanding officer and the most senior member of the crew. While being “new” to the Coast Guard is the highlight of the ceremony, Cutter Hamilton’s most enthusiastic crewmembers are just as new to the Coast Guard.
USCG Reponds to Boat Fire Near Cushing Island
A Coast Guard Station South Portland, Maine, crew responded to a boat fire aboard a 30-foot lobster boat in the vicinity of Cushing Island, Maine, Monday. The Portland dispatch notified Station South Portland at about 12:20 p.m., of a fire aboard the lobster boat Hard Bottom with one person aboard. A Station South Portland 47-foot Motor Life Boat crew and a 25-foot Response Boat-Small crew immediately launched and a Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod, Massachusetts, helicopter was diverted to the scene. Once on scene, the South Portland crew learned the fire had been extinguished, but had rendered the vessel disabled. The 25-foot RB-S crew was able to safely tow the Hard Bottom in to Union Pier. There were no medical concerns reported.
SC Ports Report Record Pier Container Volumes
Today South Carolina Ports reported March pier container volumes were the highest since August 2008. Last month the Port handled 85,616 boxes, totaling 692,338 pier containers fiscal year to date. "March is traditionally a seasonally strong month," said Jim Newsome, SCPA president and CEO. "The SCPA saw an 11 percent year over year increase in pier container volumes for the month, with growth of both import and export cargo. In March, the Port handled 150,516 TEUs, or 20-foot equivalent units, a 10 percent increase over the same month last year.
