Autonomous command and control systems developer Sea Machines Robotics announced it has advanced its multi-year Other Transaction (OT) agreement with the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD)’s Defense Innovation Unit (DIU). Phase 2 of the multiphase contract delegates $3.1 million to the deployment of a full-scale oceangoing replenishment platform.In October 2020, Boston-based Sea Machines was enlisted by the DoD to engineer, build and demonstrate ready-to-deploy system kits that transform existing commercial barges to platforms capable of landing and replenishing military aircraft.

Austal announced the United States Department of Defense has awarded Austal USA US$10,252,142 for a cost-plus-award fee against a previously awarded Basic Ordering Agreement. The order provides engineering and management services for advanced planning and design in support of the post shakedown availability for Littoral Combat Ship, USS Manchester (LCS14). Austal will provide program management, advanced planning, engineering, design, material kitting and subcontract management. Kalmar, part of Cargotec, has received an order to supply a further 18 rough terrain container handlers to the United States Department of Defense. Destined to replace older equipment, the Kalmar RT240s will be delivered to multiple locations across the United States by the end of the year 2015. The total value of the order is approximately EUR 16 million (USD 18 million). The Kalmar RT240 provides exceptional performance, able to handle containerised loads of up to 53,000lbs (24 tonnes) across all types of terrain. Commenting on the order, Stephen Speakes, President and CEO at Kalmar RT Center (KRTC) in Cibolo, Texas, said, "This is yet another endorsement of the great quality of Kalmar's solutions for rough terrain applications.

Austal USA gains additional Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) work contract. The United States Department of Defense has announced that Austal USA has been awarded a US$19.987-million modification to a previously awarded Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) contract. The modification exercises options for class service efforts and special studies, analyses and reviews for the LCS program. Austal USA will assess engineering and production challenges, and evaluate the cost and schedule risks, from affordability efforts to reduce LCS acquisition and lifecycle costs. Work is expected to be completed by March 2014.

Trailer Bridge, Inc. (NASDAQ Global Market: TRBR), as part of the global relief effort for Haiti, contracted with the Military Sealift Command (MSC), the transportation provider for the United States Department of Defense, to provide one of its vessels in support of the U.S. government’s relief efforts in Haiti. The contract term is a minimum of 90 days and may be extended by MSC. Trailer Bridge has also partnered with one of its current shipping customers to provide free transportation and trailers for donated medical supplies to Port-au-Prince, Haiti, through the company’s operation in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic. It is expected that the company’s donated trailers will remain in Haiti for local use or storage.

The Department of the Navy will commission the Arleigh Burke class guided-missile destroyer Howard in a ceremony Saturday, Oct. p.m. CDT at pier 27 in Galveston, Texas. The ship is named in honor of Marine Corps Gunnery Sgt. Jimmie E. Howard (1929-1993), recipient of the Medal of Honor for his leadership of a platoon against repeated attacks by a battalion-sized Viet Cong force. After receiving severe wounds from an enemy grenade, he distributed ammunition to his men and directed air strikes on the enemy. By dawn, his beleaguered platoon still held their position. Howard also received the Silver Star Medal for service in Korea. A previous Howard (1920-1945), named for Charles W. Howard, a U.S. Navy hero from the Civil War, earned six battle stars in World War II.

Secretary of the Navy Donald Winter announced on May 29 his decision to name the Navy's newest underway replenishment vessel, USNS Amelia Earhart (T-AKE 6). The name honors Amelia Mary Earhart for her courage, vision, and groundbreaking achievements, both in aviation and for women. Amelia Earhart's name became a household word in 1932 when she became the first woman -- and second person --to fly solo across the Atlantic, on the fifth anniversary of Charles Lindbergh's feat, flying a Lockheed Vega from Harbor Grace, Newfoundland to Londonderry, Ireland. That year, she received the Distinguished Flying Cross from the Congress, the Cross of Knight of the Legion of Honor from the French government, and the Gold Medal of the National Geographic Society from President Herbert Hoover.

QinetiQ subsidiary Foster-Miller Inc, has been awarded a $1 million contract to further develop its advanced Boat Trap system by the United States Department of Defense Joint Non-Lethal Weapons Directorate, working closely with the US Coast Guard. Designed to bolster US harbor security and protect coastal military bases abroad, Boat Trap is a non lethal, ballistic net that is deployed from a helicopter into the path of a threatening speedboat traveling at high speed. It is designed to entangle the propeller, causing the craft to immediately stop. Port security and ship protection has become a central issue in the war on terror and recent assessments of US port security has highlighted the risk from terrorists' using speed boats as a mode of attack.
