US' Sole Heavy Icebreaker Arrives in Antarctica

The 157 crewmembers of the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Polar Star (WAGB 10) arrived at McMurdo Station in Antarctica Monday following an 86-day transit from the United States and the cutter’s departure from its Seattle homeport Nov. 13.This deployment marks the Polar Star’s 25th journey to Antarctica supporting Operation Deep Freeze, an annual joint military service mission to resupply the United States Antarctic stations in support of the National Science Foundation, lead agency for the United States Antarctic Program.Each year…

Mohawk Changes Command

Coast Guard Cmdr. Craig J. Wieschhorster took command of the medium-endurance Cutter Mohawk during a ceremony Thursday at Coast Guard Sector Key West. Coast Guard Atlantic Area chief of staff, Capt. Doug Fears presided over the change of command ceremony as Wieschhorster relieved Cmdr. Adam B. Morrison of the duties and responsibilities as 14th commanding officer of the Cutter Mohawk. “Although I leave the Cutter Mohawk with a heavy heart,” said Morrison, “I have trust in Cmdr. Morrison was awarded a Meritorious Service Medal recognizing his service and performance of duty. During Morrison’s successful two-year command, Cutter Mohawk’s crew achieved a number of operational successes.

Two foreign nationals are now placed into safety by the Philippine Coast Guard after sustaining minor injuries from an incident while sailing east of Basterra Reef, Palawan. Kazakhstan Recognizes ABS

ABS and The Republic of Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Transport and Communication (MTC) have concluded an agreement granting ABS Recognized Organization (RO) status, able to act on behalf of the country’s maritime Administration. This designation allows ABS to perform statutory certification surveys and functions on board Republic of Kazakhstan flagged vessels and offshore units, and for companies which operate these ships and units. In this capacity, ABS determines the compliance of such vessels with applicable international convention requirements and national regulations for the issuance of relevant statutory certificates on behalf of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
