Hughes to Address MMA Alumni Foundation Dinner

Newly elected International Longshoremen's Association President Richard P. Hughes, Jr., will be the guest speaker at the United States Merchant Marine Academy Alumni Foundation dinner in New York on Wednesday, September 5. The event is honoring the Major Liner Ports of the U.S., and will benefit the Academy's Regimental Band. Hughes, whose career has been dedicated to maritime labor, will be the keynote speaker at his first public-speaking engagement since being elected ILA President by the rank-and-file at the Annual meeting. He succeeds John Bowers. Hughes was elected president of the International Longshoremen's Association, AFL-CIO in July 2007. Previously, he held the position of Executive Vice President since October 2005. Mr.

Sec. of Labor Praises Merchant Mariners

Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao extolled the importance of the maritime industry to America's security and economy in an address to the United States Merchant Marine Academy Alumni Foundation on Wednesday evening in New York. "When the history of this era is written, the U.S. Merchant Marine will be remembered as a key part of the effort to defend our homeland," said Chao. "More than 8,000 brave merchant mariners crew auxiliary vessels for the United States Navy to support our troops in Afghanistan and Iraq. "Merchant mariners also make America's economy stronger as they transport our nation's energy supplies, goods and passengers," Chao continued.

Maritime Administrator To Address USMMA Alumni Foundation

United States Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao and Sean Connaughton, the new U. S. Maritime Administrator, will be guest speakers at the United States Merchant Marine Academy Alumni Foundation dinner in New York on Wednesday, September 27 honoring America's Deep-Sea Domestic fleet. The gala dinner will benefit the American Merchant Marine Museum located on the Academy's campus in Kings Point, Long Island. Secretary Chao, whose career has spanned international transportation issues on many levels, will be the keynote speaker and Mr. Connaughton, a 1983 graduate of the Academy who also served in the U. S. Coast Guard, will give a special address at his first New York-area public engagement.
