Maersk Invests in Refrigerant Container Units

Maersk Line has ordered the first 100 of a total of 200 refrigerated containers to be chilled by Carrier Transicold’s NaturaLINE natural refrigerant based system. Carrier Transicold is a part of UTC Climate, Controls & Security, a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX). Carrier Transicold’s highly efficient NaturaLINE is the first container refrigeration system to use the natural refrigerant carbon dioxide (CO2), which is a safe and nonozone depleting gas with a global warming potential (GWP) of one.

Helicopter Operators Set for Take-off as Oil Drilling Picks Up

A pickup in offshore drilling is swelling the orderbooks of the handful of helicopter operators that shuttle oil workers to and from remote rigs. Their stock prices, depressed after Big Oil's recent spending cuts, could also be readying for take-off. Bristow Group Inc plans to invest $1 billion this year to procure just some of the 300 new helicopters that Barclays estimates will be needed by the oil and gas industry over the next five years. "We will invest more in this one year than in the last two-and-a-half years combined," said Jonathan Baliff, the chief financial officer of Bristow who will take over as CEO on July 31. Ballard Power Posts Smaller-Than-Expected Loss

Canadian fuel cell maker Ballard Power Systems Inc posted a smaller-than-expected quarterly loss, helped by higher revenue from its engineering services and material handling businesses. Revenue from Ballard's engineering services business, which counts Volkswagen AG among its customers, rose nearly threefold in the first quarter ended March 31. The business accounted for half of Ballard's total revenue in the quarter. Ballard said it expected to begin supplying fuel cell stacks to service Plug Power Inc's order with Wal-Mart Stores Inc in the second half of this year. Plug Power said in February it would supply 1,738 hydrogen fuel cells, used to power forklifts and other material-handling equipment, to Wal-Mart.

Marioff has signed a five-year frame agreement for maintenance services with Carnival Corporation & plc. The agreement covers servicing and maintaining HI-FOG water mist fire suppression systems already installed onboard 66 cruise vessels owned by Carnival Corporation and operating under Carnival Cruise Lines, Holland America Line N.V., Seabourn Cruise Line Ltd., Cunard Line, Carnival Australia, P&O Cruises, Princess Cruise Lines Ltd and AIDA Cruises brands. The world's marine insurers collectively lost $3 billion in 1999, Norway's Central Union of Marine Underwriters (CEFOR) said. Cefor's calculation uses the collective experience of marine insurers in Norway - one of the world's major marine insurance markets - and extrapolates the results to the global industry. Cefor's md said that not even in their previous worst case estimates did CEFOR anticipate anything like this. The principal reason for the losses is continuing reduction in insurance premium rates, said Formso. On CEFOR's current estimates, rates in 2000 have dropped to 31 per cent of their 1994 levels. Defense Companies Rebound

Defense companies, which have suffered mightily on the stock markets of late, took a sharp upturn, led by General Dynamics Corp., which posted strong earnings last Wednesday and was upgraded by brokerage SG Cowen Thursday.
