Protecting Marine Life from Ship Noise

Ship noise has been shown to be the main contributor to underwater noise on a global scale, with recognized negative impacts on marine life, said a press release from International Maritime Organization (IMO). Scientists and researchers from international organizations, States and expert groups have been sharing the latest information on ocean noise, including its detrimental impact on species such as whales and dolphins, at the informal annual meeting on oceans and the law of the sea, at United Nations headquarters, New York, United States (18-22 June). The theme for this year’s meeting is "Anthropogenic underwater noise". IMO’s Stefan Micallef and Fredrik Haag outlined IMO’s work to date on ship noise.

United Nations East River Security Zones Scheduled

U.S. Coast Guard crewmembers are scheduled to enforce security zones on the East River near the United Nations Headquarters beginning Friday. The security zones scheduled to begin Sept. 16, and continue until Sept. 25, 2016, include all waters of the East River between East 35th Street and the Queensboro/59th Street Bridge. Zone (1): This zone is always in effect. No Vessels within 175 yards of Manhattan between East 35th Street and the Queensboro/59th Street Bridge in the West Channel of the East River.

China's $40b Maritime Silk Road Shaping Up

China's $40 billion fund to finance its most ambitious global plan - the Silk Roads and Maritime Silk Road is moving forward steadily as its management team has taken shape. China has appointed top officials to manage the fund. A team headed by Wang Yanzhi, an official with China's foreign exchange regulator, has been formed to formally operate the fund. People's Bank of China (PBOC) assistant governor Jin Qi will be the fund's chief executive and Zhu Surong, governor of PBOC's Urumqi branch in Xinjiang, has been appointed board member of the fund. The fund was announced by President Xi Jinping last year to build major infrastructure projects aimed to enhance its strategic influence and blunt the US' big push into Asia-Pacific.

East River Closes for United Nations General Assembly

The Coast Guard will enforce security zones on the East River during the United Nations General Assembly, periodically restricting vessel traffic in the upper harbor near the United Nations Headquarters, New York, starting at 7 a.m. Monday. The Coast Guard will be enforcing security zones, from Sept. 21-29, on the East River between East 35th Street and the Queensboro/59th Street Bridge. Zone 1: This zone is always in effect. No Vessels within 175 yards of Manhattan between East 35th Street and the Queensboro/59th Street Bridge in the West Channel of the East River.

NY Security Advisory

The U.S. Coast Guard expanded the advisory notice issued Saturday to include all waters within 100 yards of the southern Manhattan Pierhead Line between the North Cove Yacht Harbor and the Brooklyn Bridge. Recreational vessels are not authorized to operate within this area, except for those requiring access to the North Cove Yacht Harbor. Ferries and charter boats that normally operate in this area and recreational vessels requiring access to the yacht harbor must contact the USCG. The East River Deepwater Range remains open to transiting commercial traffic. In addition, the security level for the security zone in the west channel of the East River at the United Nations Headquarters has been raised to MARSEC 2.

Port of New York-New Jersey Designated MARSEC Level 2

The USCG Captain of the Port for New York issued a Notice stating that, effective through February 1, 2005, Maritime Security (MARSEC) Level 2 has been designated for selected maritime locations adjacent to the New York City Financial District and the United Nations Headquarters. The regulated navigation area in which MARSEC 2 applies includes all waters of the East and Hudson Rivers extending 100 yards out from the Pierhead Line from and including the northernmost side of the North Cove Yacht Harbor extending around the southern tip of Manhattan Island to and including the Brooklyn Bridge. Northrop Grumman Team Lends Hands to Rebuild Community

A group of Northrop Grumman Corporation shipbuilders offered their construction skills to support rebuilding efforts in the Gulf Coast communities this week. These employees, who normally perform traditional shipbuilding crafts such as welding, pipefitting and shipfitting, framed doors, nailed floors and hung sheetrock in Jackson County, Mississippi's storm-damaged United Way headquarters. Northrop Grumman. the organization's community impact grant program. $428,686 to United Way for its work in 2006. from Katrina. this week, while visiting the Ship Systems sector on business. helped in the rebuilding of the community's United Way headquarters.
