Grand Bahama Shipyard Stayed Busy in 2016

The Caribbean shipyard Grand Bahama Shipyard Limited (GBSL) worked on 49 commercial vessels and 20 cruise ships throughout 2016, with scope of works ranging from major steel fabrication and repairs, to engine and technical systems overhauls, hull treatment and tank cleanings. And looking to 2017 and beyond, the yard reports it has a healthy order book, with docking periods secured as far ahead as three years. VShips USA brought two bulk carriers, CSL Acadian and CSL Argosy, to GBSL to do tank cleaning on both vessels. CSL Acadian also received extensive pipe work.

Another Newbuild Tanker Joins Ardmore Fleet

Tanker shipper Ardmore Shipping Corporation’s latest newbuild vessel, Ardmore Seawolf, was delivered by SPP Shipbuilding from the Sacheon shipyard in Korea on August 13, 2015. The addition of the 49,999 DWT IMO 3 product and chemical tanker increases the number of Ardmore vessels on the water to 22, joining sister ships, Ardmore Sealion and Ardmore Seafox. Merged Anglo-Eastern & Univan Set Sail

Anglo-Eastern Group and Univan Group have reached an agreement which culminates as the largest ever merger of independent, third-party ship management companies, now known as the Anglo-Eastern Univan Group. NNPC Bans 113 Oil Tankers from Nigerian Waters

Nigeria's state oil company NNPC has banned 113 oil tankers from the country's waters, citing a directive from President Muhammadu Buhari, in what traders said could be part of efforts to crack down on illegal crude oil trading. The vessels, which include mainly VLCC crude oil tankers, are banned from calling at Nigerian crude oil terminals and also from Nigerian waters with immediate effect, said a letter circulated by NNPC, "pending a notice to the contrary by government". The letter, a copy of which was seen by Reuters and which gave no reason for the ban, was dated July 15. NNPC did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Since taking office in May, Buhari has been working to fulfil a campaign promise to tackle corruption, particularly in the oil industry.

Ardmore Shipping Takes Tanker Delivery

Ardmore Shipping Corporation took delivery of the newbuild product and chemical tanker vessel Ardmore Seafox on June 25, 2015, the company announced today. The 49,999 dwt, Eco-design IMO 3 tanker was built at Korea's SPP Shipbuilding Co., Ltd Sacheon Shipyard and is the second in a series of four SPP newbuilds scheduled to be delivered to Ardmore in 2015, following the delivery of sister ship Ardmore Sealion on May 26. The addition of Ardmore Seafox increases the number of Ardmore vessels on the water to 20 with a total tonnage of 819,519 DWT.

ABS Elects New Council

At the 150th Annual Meeting of the Members of ABS, three industry leaders were elected to the ABS Council. Following the Annual Meeting, the ABS Council met and elected industry leaders to both its Marine and Offshore Technical Committees. Individuals serving on the ABS Council and the Technical Committees help guide the class society in fulfilling its mission of promoting the security of life, property and the natural environment. “Classification represents the concept of self-regulation for the marine and offshore industry,” said ABS President and CEO Christopher J. Wiernicki.

InterManager Salutes Capt. Vanderperre

InterManager, the international association of in-house and third party ship managers, has paid tribute to the life and memory of Captain Charles Vanderperre, the founder of Univan Ship Management and the long-accredited grandfather of modern day third party shipmanagement, who died at the age of 88. In a statement, Guy Morel, General Secretary of the Association, said: “We salute his memory and applaud the work he did in driving forward the development of third party shipmanagement. Captain Vanderperre, who handed over the responsibility for the day to day operations of Univan to the management team some months ago, passed away peacefully on 19th September, in his 88th year, after a long illness. A private funeral will take place in Thailand this week.

Cheng Completes Deal with Louis Dreyfus, DVB Nedship

Fred Cheng’s new shipping company, Shinyo International, has purchased the 1998-built 43,000dwt bulk carrier Bara from Louis Dreyfus Armateurs SNC of France. The ship is chartered back to CETRAGPA (Louis Dreyfus) for a period of four years. The transaction marks the first post-Golden Ocean acquisition by Cheng. It also reflects the core industrial shipping approach taken by Cheng over his twenty five years as a shipowner. DVB Nedship Bank provided the mortgage finance for the acquisition out of the bank’s Hong Kong office. The ship will be managed by Univan Ship Management, also of Hong Kong. ABS Audits Univan Tanker

Hong Kong based Univan Shipmanagement becomes the latest organization to achieve certification from class society ABS in order to meet the IMO’s International Ship and Port Security (ISPS) Code in preparation for the July 2004 implementation date. Univan Ship Management and its sister company Pacific Marine, together manage a diverse fleet of over one hundred vessels comprising tankers, bulk carriers, pure car carriers, chemical tankers, container carriers, general cargo vessels, reefers, supply vessels and woodchip carriers.
