As part of the Clean Autonomous Public Transportation Network (CAPTN) initiative, Anschütz' research into autonomous systems and assistance systems onboard ships that support navigators has made progress in 2023. In the Remote Operating Centre (ROC) which is set up on land at Anschütz, the MV Wavelab -- a research catamaran that is operating on a maritime test field on the Kiel Fjord in Germany -- is monitored. Part of the ROC is a complete digital twin with all the data provided by the various existing and experimental sensors and systems on board the Wavelab.

Germany's Anneliese Jost has been selected as the recipient of the International Maritime Prize for 2022, the the International Maritime Organization (IMO) announced. The technology group Wärtsilä has delivered a navigation simulator and specific mathematical models to the Satakunta University of Applied Sciences (SAMK) in the city of Rauma, Finland. Oskari Kosonen has been named managing director of Turku Repair Yard, a Finnish ship repair arm of the Estonia-based BLRT Grupp.Kosonen joined Turku Repair Yard in November 2007. Before that, he held positions at a design and engineering company as well as at a shipyard, where he mainly managed naval projects. Damen Shipyards Group has announced its latest concept design: the Damen Decommissioning Series. The vessel will specialize in three core areas of the oil and gas decommissioning sector: topside decommissioning offshore platform removal, and subsea cleaning and removal. The design is based on in-house research carried out at Damen by one of its undergraduate interns. By inviting a considerable number of internships at its yards, Damen Shipyards Group contributes significantly to the maritime education system. One recent position was offered to Justin Rietveld, studying Maritime Technology at the Rotterdam Mainport University of Applied Sciences. His brief was to investigate the potential niche markets for new vessel designs in the oil and gas decommissioning sector.

Blohm+Voss has appointed Jean-Gabriel Tridon as General Manager and Dieter Pladeck as Finance Director for its new maintenance and refit facility in La Ciotat in the south of France. The company has filled the two management positions only two weeks after winning the local tender of La Ciotat Shipyards for the setting up of the new site. In La Ciotat, Blohm+Voss will focus on the maintenance and refit of megayachts of over 80 meters in length. Team ENSTA Bretagne from France won the 11th edition SAUC-E competition, the Student Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Challenge - Europe. The winners of the Worldwide Ferry Safety Association’s (WFSA) Safe Affordable Ferry Competition, as determined by a panel of judges, have been announced by WFSA Executive Director Dr. Roberta Weisbrod. The requirements of this year’s competition were to design a safe and affordable RoPax ferry able to transport 185 passengers plus a crew of 15 and cargo carrying vehicles on a route linking five islands surrounding Indonesia’s Savu Sea. Taking home first place honors is the University of Strathclyde, which will earn a $5,000 prize for its Savutec ferry.

Rajaish Bajpaee will hand over CEO responsibility of Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement (BSM) to his current deputy, Capt. Norbert Aschmann, through planned succession at the end of December 2014 after more than 27 at the Schulte Group. Bajpaee will then take up the position of Chairman in a nonexecutive capacity, with effect from January 1, 2015, where he will support the continued success of BSM. Student teams from six maritime universities and schools have submitted proposals for the Second Annual Design Competition for Safe Affordable Ferries sponsored by the Worldwide Ferry Safety Association. A panel of five judges will review the submissions and will announce the winners by early Fall 2014. The top prize is $5,000 with second and third prizes also to be awarded. The student teams were asked to submit a design for a ferry to transport up to 200 passengers and ro-ro cargo between Lae and Kavieng in Papua New Guinea (with several intermediate stops), a distance of 350 nautical miles.

Geomares Publishing has introduced a new training book ECDIS Basics, written by Professor Ralph Becker-Heins, which aims to give practical hands-on knowledge to all those who will be trained in the operational use of Electronic Chart Display and Information systems (ECDIS). The publishers explain that ECDIS is one of the most complex and sophisticated navigational tools on board a ship today. High quality training and instructions are therefore essential requirements and this is where this book can play an important role. For less experienced users, the book will help to gain an overview of the principles of ECDIS navigation and the related challenges. However, it is likely that advanced ECDIS operators will also be able to find new answers and helpful suggestions in this book.

The 2014 Torsional Vibration Symposium, organized by the Vibration Association, is scheduled for May 21-23 in Salzburg Congress, Austria. The event aims to gather industry experts from around the world to discuss current torsional vibration developments, issues and technologies. The event will feature five informational sessions, an exhibition, gala dinner and many discussion/networking opportunities. Preliminary topics include torsional vibration aspects of combustion engines, powertrain components, applications and system behavior, fundamental engineering and torsional vibration calculation, torsional vibration measurement and rules and regulations.

Filling a perceived gap in the global calendar of technical gatherings in the power transmission sector, the first Torsional Vibration Symposium will be held from May 21-23, 2014 in Salzburg, Austria. The goal of the Symposium is to stage a unique event for experts involved with the subject matter from all over the world and from any affected branch of industry. Today the results of the World Ferry Safety Association international student design competition for a Safe Affordable Ferry were announced.
