Coronavirus Cases Rise on Cruise Ship Marooned off Japan

Dozens more people onboard a cruise ship quarantined in the port of Yokohama, Japan, tested positive for the coronavirus on Friday and thousands of passengers remained confined to their cabins, only allowed on deck briefly for fresh air.The Diamond Princess, owned by Miami-based Carnival Corp, was placed on a two-week quarantine on arriving at Yokohama on Monday after a man who disembarked in Hong Kong was diagnosed with the virus.Japanese Health Minister Katsunobu Kato told a news conference that 41 people on the liner had tested positive for coronavirus on Friday…

Robots Help Map England’s Deepwater Canyons

The first true three-dimensional picture of submarine canyon habitats has been produced using a combination of marine robotics and ship-based measurements. The information captured in this new set of maps ranges in scale from the 200km canyon down to the size of an individual cold-water coral polyp, and will be used to inform the management of the only English Marine Conservation Zone in deep water. This ‘nested map’ is the result of a recent scientific expedition to the Whittard Canyon in the Bay of Biscay, led by the National Oceanography Centre (NOC).

James Fisher Opens Offshore Vessel for Tours

James Fisher Marine Services Ltd (JFMS), and Fendercare Marine, both subsidiaries of James Fisher and Sons plc (JFS), held an open day to demonstrate the capability of their shoreside support base and the offshore support vessel, the Dart Fisher. The Dart Fisher, which was berthed in the Fendercare Marine base in Great Yarmouth, is a 26-meter catamaran specifically designed to service the offshore energy industry with the capability to transfer up to 12 engineers, three 20-foot containers with a total combined cargo weight of 30 metric tons.

Due to a continued increase in business, and an increasing portfolio of ever more sophisticated instruments and systems, Surrey based Planet Ocean Ltd. appointed Kira Coley as Scientific Applications Specialist. Kira will provide scientific and technical support to new and existing customers as well as being the science liaison between Planet Ocean and its principals. Kira will spend most of her time working with principals and customers on “science behind the measurement” activities and is available to provide help and assistance from that perspective.

Offshore O&M Expenditure Forecast: $335B in 5 Years

More than $335 billion worth of expenditure is expected over the next five years on offshore oil & gas operations & maintenance (O&M), according to a new report, The World Offshore Operations & Maintenance Market Forecast 2012-2016, by Douglas-Westwood (DW).
