Canadian headquartered naval architecture firm Robert Allan Ltd. announced that its Executive Chairman, Robert G. "Rob" Allan, has been made an Honorary Member by the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME), making him one of only 50 living individuals to enjoy this privilege. This membership is awarded to a person as result of their dedicated service to the maritime industry and the Society and is a symbol of recognition offered as a token of the high esteem in which their colleagues hold them.SNAME has previously honored Rob Allan with many accolades.

Dr. Alberto Morandi has been appointed to the position of General Manager of GustoMSC’s office in Houston. He will be responsible for running the office and will act as point of contact for GustoMSC’s U.S. clients. GustoMSC is a design and engineering firm serving the offshore energy sector, and its U.S. office represents the company’s design solutions, associated hardware and specialist consultancy and engineering services in the local markets of the U.S. and the Americas. With Dr. Morandi’s appointment, GustoMSC said it aims to further ensure close working relations with its local clients and to facilitate easy access to the technical expertise of its headquarters in the Netherlands. The 20 year four-fold growth pattern in the world’s FPSO fleet stalls out in 2016 with a record number of FPSOs idle and available for redeployment – or perhaps to be forced into other uses, lay up or scrap. FPSO redeployments typically are far more complex, costly and risky than for (say) drillships and yet the need for redeploying idle FPSOs is now in the forefront of the industry like never before as FPSO owners also have to face the worst ever down market for their equipment and services.

A new research collaboration between A*STAR’s IHPC, Sembcorp Marine Ltd, University of Glasgow and UGS aims to  make a ship’s voyage more smooth sailing by improving its hydrodynamics and energy efficiency. The four organizations today signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to collaborate and develop new hull designs for large ocean-going vessels and make them more environmentally friendly. Under the three-year MoU, IHPC, Sembcorp Marine Ltd, University of Glasgow and UGS will use computational modeling and visualization technologies to design vessels with improved hydrodynamics for better fuel efficiency. In addition, they will collaborate and innovate on features to reduce harmful exhaust emissions and discharges by enhancing the vessel’s scrubber and ballast treatment systems.

HRH The Duke of Rothesay addressed global fisheries leaders on sustainability. The world’s fisheries community gathered in Edinburgh today (Tuesday, 8 May) to discuss the future of sustainable fishing at the 6th World Fisheries Congress. Organised by The World Council of Fisheries Societies, the congress is being held at Edinburgh International Conference Centre and will address “Sustainable Fisheries in a Changing World”. The event draws leading international figures influential in driving debate and shaping global policy on fishing.

Tsakos Energy Navigation Limited announced that Takis Arapoglou has been appointed to the company's board of directors. Arapoglou was Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the National Bank of Greece from March 2004 until December 2009 and Chairman of the Hellenic Bankers Association from 2005 to 2009. Prior to this and between 2000 and 2004, he was Managing Director and Global Banking Industry Head for Citigroup based in London. He is a graduate of the University of Athens School of Mathematics and earned a BSc in Naval Architecture from the University of Glasgow and an MSc in Management from Brunel University. D. Keppel Corp. Limited and Keppel TatLee Bank Limited have appointed Lim Chee Onn as executive chairman upon the retirement of Sim Kee Boon, effective January 1, 2000. Boon will continue to act as senior advisor to the Keppel Group. Onn, who holds a BSc in Naval Architecture from the University of Glasgow and a Masters in Public Administration from Harvard University, has been senior executive director of Keppel Corp. since September 1983.

Since the beginning of the 20th Century when Robert Allan's grandfather emigrated from Scotland to Canada, he treated the concept of naval architecture as a "science" rather than a trade. With little money but a lot of talent, the young man nurtured and grew a family business that would span three generations. From the time he accepted his first job as manager of a Canadian shipyard in 1919, Robert Allan started moving ideas from his head to innovative vessels. Armed with sketchbook and pencil, he opened his own naval architecture and marine engineering firm in his basement. All along, it was evident though that Robert Allan was exceptional.
