In 2007, scholar Nassim Nicholas Taleb, who holds a doctorate from the University of Paris, wrote a bestselling book titled â€śBlack Swan,” which proposed a theory involving unpredictable events with significant impact. Taleb believed that a black swan event was an outlier with significant impact and, once it occurs, is the source of deep reflection and rationalization. Caterpillar CFO to Retire in 2018

Caterpillar Inc. will begin its global, external search for a new chief financial officer after it announced that group president and CFO Brad Halverson has elected to retire in early 2018, concluding a career spanning more than three decades with the company. Halverson will continue working into early 2018 and will help ensure a smooth transition for the new CFO. Prior to becoming CFO, Halverson served two years as vice president of the Finance Services Division, and before that position, he was the corporate controller. Halverson joined Caterpillar in 1988 as an accountant.

The 23rd Annual International Maritime Hall of Fame reception and awards dinner took place yesterday evening in New York where five individuals were honored in front of more than 350 of their colleagues from the international maritime transportation industry. The Maritime Association of the Port of New York and New Jersey founded the Annual International Maritime Hall of Fame in 1993 to recognize maritime visionaries who, through excellence in their company, organization or services, best exemplify the qualities of futuristic thinking that guides the maritime industry.

Dolphin die-off Spurred by BP Oil Spill

A record dolphin die-off in the northern Gulf of Mexico was caused by the largest oil spill in U.S. history, researchers said on Wednesday, citing a new study that found many of the dolphins died with rare lesions linked to petroleum exposure. Scientists said the study of dead dolphins tissue rounded out the research into a spike of dolphin deaths in the region affected by BP Plc's oil spill that was caused by the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil rig explosion. USN Announces 2015 Young Investigators

It's a career-defining moment for 36 college and university faculty April 30, as the Department of the Navy announces the recipients of its 2015 Young Investigator Program, one of the oldest and most selective scientific research advancement programs in the country. Collectively, awardees will receive $18.8 million in grants to fund research across a range of naval-relevant science and technology areas. This is a banner year for the program, administered by the Office of Naval Research (ONR), which increased funding by 50 percent over last year. "These recipients demonstrate the type of visionary, multidisciplinary thought that helps the U.S. Navy anticipate and adapt to a dynamic battlespace," said Dr. Larry Schuette, ONR's director of research.

Vice Adm. Brown Confirmed as NOAA Deputy Administrator

Retired Coast Guard Vice Adm. Manson Brown was appointed by President Obama and confirmed by a voice vote of the U.S. Senate to serve as assistant secretary of commerce for environmental observation and prediction and deputy administrator for NOAA. Brown joins NOAA after 36 years of service in the U.S. Coast Guard. As deputy administrator, Brown will play a major role driving the Obama administration and NOAA priorities for weather and water services, climate science, plus the agency’s integrated mapping and Earth-observing capabilities.

Caterpillar Rejigs Top Deck

Caterpillar Inc. * Doug Hoerr has been appointed as vice president with responsibility for the Strategic Services Division. Caterpillar’s Board of Directors has appointed Julie Lagacy, a 26-year veteran of the company and currently vice president with responsibility for the Finance Services Division (FSD), as Chief Information Officer (CIO) and vice president with responsibility for the Global Information Services Division (GIS). In addition to leading FSD, earlier this year Lagacy assumed leadership of GIS following the departure of the former Chief Information Officer. She will continue to report to Brad Halverson, group president and Chief Financial Officer, and will also retain the Business Systems Transformation (BST) group.

MLC Demands Generate Rise in Defibrillator Orders

Martek Marine reported a significant increase in marine defibrillator sales in 2013, up 475% on 2012, with over four months of the year remaining. These sales include an order of more than 100 AEDs to Swire’s entire China Navigation fleet, as Swire beat the new Maritime Labour Convention’s (MLC) August deadline to have a marine defibrillator on every vessel, with crew trained in its use. Other customers include Bernhard Schulte Management, Chemikalien Seatransport and Topaz Energy & Marine.
