John-Kaare Aune has been appointed Chief Executive Officer at Wallem Group, effective October 1, 2021, after a successful term as Interim CEO.He joined Wallem in 2019 as Managing Director, Shipmanagement, andtook over as Group CEO on an interim basis in January 2021 following the resignation of Frank Coles.Before joining Wallem, he worked as Regional Director – Asia Pacific at the Cayman Registry, playing a key role in the growth of its global commercial activities. He had previously worked at the Norwegian Maritime Directorate.

NAPA, a maritime software, services, and data analysis provider, has announced the appointment of Tor E. Svensen, Vice President, Marine Technology at Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines to its board. Svensen has previously served as CEO of DNV GL Maritime, chairman of the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS), and professor at the University of Strathclyde.As CEO of DNV GL Maritime, Svensen helped to outline a consistent vision of shipping's technology-enabled future, which achieved sustained, empirical improvements in safety, sustainability, and efficiency.

A remediation programme to protect island ecosystems from damage caused by oil pollution from World War II wrecks sunk in the Pacific Ocean will launch in Newcastle Harbour today (Thursday 23 May).The programme is the result of a partnership between Major Projects Foundation, the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) – an intergovernmental Pacific regional organisation made up of 26 members – and the University of Newcastle. Naval architecture and marine engineering firm Gibbs & Cox, Inc. has appointed Jeffrey B. Bowles as Director of its Chesapeake, Va. division, Donald L. Blount & Associates (DLBA).   Bowles joined DLBA in 2001 as a Webb Institute Naval Architect and earned a master's degree in Marine Engineering from the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne. He was promoted to DLBA Technical Director in 2011. Bowles is a licensed Professional Engineer in the states of Virginia, Florida and New York, and is a certified Project Management Professional.

Tor E. Svensen, Group Executive Vice President at DNV GL, has decided to retire effective from August 1, 2016. Svensen is a ubiquitous figure in maritime circles, and he will continue to work in the maritime industry and will, amongst other things, take up a role as professor at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, focusing on education and research related to safety at sea. Svensen’s career at DNV GL spanned more than 20years and saw him lead the Maritime Business for more than a decade.

ARENA has invested $1 billion in more than 230 projects, fellowships and scholarships that are paving the way for a more diverse energy future for Australia. The patented BOS Emulsified Fuel System (EFS) is designed to improve combustion efficiency by improving the injector fuel atomization. At his President’s Day Lecture, Professor John Carlton FREng, Professor of Marine Engineering, City University London and the 109th President of the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST), will retrospectively discuss some of the marine failures that he has encountered, with the aim of teasing out the underlying issues that have contributed to their causes. The classifications society Germanischer Lloyd (GL) rewarded three young engineers for their outstanding diploma theses. Charles Arkinstall, a 21-year veteran of P&O Princess Cruises, has been named senior vice president of maritime affairs for Carnival Corporation & plc. In this capacity, Arkinstall will head up the newly created corporate maritime affairs department, responsible for establishing and promoting fleetwide safety, health and security policies for Carnival Corporation & plc's 13 global cruise brands. He will also work closely with the company's environmental compliance division in developing corporate-wide environmental policies. Arkinstall will also serve as Carnival Corporation & plc's representative for various cruise industry organizations and act as a liaison with the company's brands regarding new regulations and developments related to safety, health and security.

SNAME Maritime Technology Conference -- The University of Newcastle's School of Marine Sciences & Technology today announces its M.Eng students have won both first and third place in the prestigious 2005 Society of Naval Architects & Marine Engineers (SNAME) conference. London's Grand Olympia Hall will be the setting for this year's Shiprepair & Conversion 2000 exhibition and conference from November 15-16. Topics of discussion highlighted in a keynote debate at the conference include conflict between regulators, owners and repair yards over ship standards. An international panel, along with 150 delegates representing all facets of the industry — will look at a common shipyard complaint — the delays of repairs by owners, which has become all too easy by obtaining class extensions. These extensions can be granted with little effort, despite classification society claims of tougher crackdowns on this issue. The conference's opening session is comprised of the industry debate on market trends, price levels, new opportunities and yard competition.

Baltimore Marine Industries has elected David Cassidy as president and CEO. Cassidy, who succeeds David Watson, who retired, had previously served as president of BethShip, the predecessor to BMI, for 15 years until its sale in 1997. Cassidy holds a B.S. in mechanical engineering and an M.S. degree in fluid mechanics from the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne in England, and has extensive experience in management and executive positions at shipyards in England, Canada and the U.S.
