Brazil's Haunting Graveyard of Ships Risks Environmental Disaster, Warns Activist Group

On a stormy evening in mid-November, a huge, abandoned cargo ship broke free of its moorings and slowly floated into the massive concrete bridge that carries cars across Brazil's Guanabara Bay to Rio de Janeiro.Brazil's navy said the 200-meter-long (660-ft.) Sao Luiz, a rust-spattered bulk carrier built in 1994, had been anchored in the bay for more than six years awaiting legal proceedings before it crashed into Latin America's longest over-water bridge. The navy said it was investigating."The Sao Luiz is still in the Port of Rio today…

KR Donates Software to World Maritime University

The Korean Register (KR), an IACS member classification society, announced that it has again donated its award winning KR-CON software to students at the World Maritime University (WMU). KR-CON is an international database program which contains the full up-to-date texts of all IMO Conventions, Codes, Resolutions and Circulars in a single USB memory stick. It enables users to identify regulations relevant to a specific task and helps ensure all IMO requirements are applied correctly. KR-CON is currently being used by surveyors, port state control inspectors, shipping companies, shipyards and design houses in more than 30 countries across the world. It is available in USB format and from the KR website where all new regulations are immediately updated.

Dynamic Positioning in Ice Research Project Gets Green Light

Kongsberg Maritime DP and simulation systems provide foundation for improving ice operations. The final piece of a CAD $8.5 million research project to improve DP operations in ice fell into place on May 23, 2012 when the Government of Canada announced a contribution of $3.2 million to the project from the Atlantic Innovation Fund, administered by the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency. Led by long-time Kongsberg Maritime simulator customer CMS – the Centre for Marine Simulation (Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University), the five-year research project aims to improve the safety and efficiency of oil and gas operations in ice environments by improving dynamic positioning (DP) system technologies for operations in ice.

Foundation Degree, Teesside University

PD Ports and Teesside University welcomed the first 15 delegates on the newly launched Foundation Degree, specifically created for those working within the Ports Industry. Launched in late September, the Foundation Degree, in Leadership and Management (Ports) is offered over two years on a part-time basis. Some of the students have not studied for over 30 years and the course will recognise that they need help to rejuvenate their learning skills. The 15 delegates span a number of diverse roles throughout the PD Ports Group.
