A prototype of the world’s first class approved ship’s propeller manufactured using 3D printing techniques has been produced by a cooperative consortium of companies that includes Damen Shipyards Group, Rotterdam Additive Manufacturing LAB (RAMLAB), Promarin, Autodesk and Bureau Veritas. The 1,350mm diameter propeller – named WAAMpeller – was fabricated from a Nickel Aluminium Bronze (NAB) alloy at RAMLAB in the Port of Rotterdam. The propeller was produced with the Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) method using a Valk welding system and Autodesk software.

The joint proposal to applicate risk based EMC regulations has been accepted and will be implemented January 2017. The intention of this proposal is to reduce EMC related costs by applying a risk based approach combined with smart installation methods. The proposal has been submitted by the “EMC for future ships” work group. Partners of RH Marine in this work group are: Damen, Thales, DMO, Lloyd’s Register and University of Twente. EMC stands for Electromagnetic compatibility, meaning that equipment won’t be interfered by phenomena such as radio frequency fields and switching transients.

IADC Authors Award at CEDA Dredging Days

Bas Borsje (left) receives the IADC Award for the Best Paper by a Young Author from IADC Secretary General René Kolman at CEDA Dredging Days, November 11, 2011.

An IADC Best Paper Award for a Young Author under the age of 35 was presented to Bas Borsje at the CEDA Dredging Days in Rotterdam on November 11, 2011, for the paper “Biogeomorphological Interactions on a Nourished Tidal Flat: Lessons Learned from Building with Nature”. Tidal flats are valuable habitats for different plants and animals, but unfortunately the total area of tidal flats is decreasing worldwide owing to various problems such as sea level rise, subsidence by gas extraction and erosion initiated by artificial constructions. Nourishing tidal flats might be a promising solution.

Lloyd's Trust Funds Research at University of Twente

The Lloyd's Register Educational Trust (The LRET) has awarded Holland's University of Twente £1 million over the next five years to establish The LRET Maintenance Research and Education Programme, which will be at the core of the university’s new Centre of Excellence in Maintenance Engineering. Maintenance is a technical field which plays a key role in assuring the health of industry and public services such as transportation. The University of Twente estimates that there is as much as €400bn presently invested in public and private sector assets in The Netherlands alone, requiring €18bn to be spent each year on maintenance, and creating jobs for about 150,000 people.
