The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New Orleans District began construction of an underwater sill October 11, 2022, across the bed of the Mississippi River channel to prevent further upriver progression of salt water from the Gulf of Mexico.The Mississippi River’s volume of water has fallen to a level that allows salt water to intrude upstream. Alabama shipbuilder Silver Ships announced it has delivered a new marine surveying vessel for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Venice Sub Office in Venice, La. The 49-foot Tobin is the latest expansion in Silver Ships’ Endeavor series of workboats and is the largest marine surveying vessel of its series.Custom designed for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to hydrographically map the mouth of the Mississippi River, the mission-specific vessel will allow researchers to accurately and effectively obtain and document data on the rapidly changing waters in the Mississippi River.

Silver Ships delivered a 48-ft. Endeavor Survey boat to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New Orleans District. The vessel will be tasked with surveying the waters in both the Gulf of Mexico and rivers of the New Orleans District. The all-welded aluminum vessel is designed and engineered by Naval Architect Lou Codega, PE of Smithfield, VA and features a hull form designed to handle the short choppy seas of the Gulf Coast regions. The vessel is powered by twin Caterpillar C18 diesel engines at 803 hp each coupled to Twin Disc v-drive gears.

The Marine Design Center, (MDC), of the U.S. Army Corps of engineers (USACE) intends to acquire three newly constructed steel deck cargo barges to serve the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New Orleans District, (CEMVN), in support of its mission. The barges will be of all-welded steel constructed, and will be designed, built and classes to American Bureau of Shipping rules. The dimensions of the barges are 120 ft. in length, 30 ft. in width and seven feet in depth. They will be raked at both ends and have flat decks with no sheer. The decks will be designed to support a 2000 PSF loading with a hearty .75-in thick plate to assure a long service life. This contract will use a multi-phased contracting methodology. Liquidation Damages are included in the contract and bonding is required.

The Maritime Institute of Technology and Graduate Studies (MITAGS) and the Crescent River Port Pilots Association (CRPPA) have announced the partnering efforts of the Crescent River Port Pilots and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New Orleans District (USACE-MVN) to develop and produce the innovative Mini-Inland Electronic Navigational Chart, dubbed Mini-IENC. The Mini-IENC provides essential, special vertical and horizontal navigation clearance information to the CRPPA while piloting the Carnival Conquest under the low lying Chalmette Powerlines located Mile 89.2 on the Lower Mississippi River. Additionally, the Mini-IENC is being used extensively for Vessel Traffic Management and Decision-making ship handling exercises by the CRPPA in the MITAGS ship-handling simulator.
