Coast Guard Foundation 'Tribute' Event Planned for June 7 in Washington, DC

The Coast Guard Foundation announced that its annual Tribute to the U.S. Coast Guard in Washington, D.C., will take place on June 7,2022, at the historic National Building Museum in Washington.The event celebrates the Coast Guard and raises funds for Coast Guard Foundation programs that support service members and their families when and where they are most in need.“We look forward to coming together with policymakers, industry leaders and government officials to highlight the heroism of the U.S.

USCG Cutter Washington Island Decommissioned

Seattle to Host Spill Preparedness Conference

The U.S. Coast Guard and Washington Department of Ecology will host a spill preparedness conference May 20-21 at the Jackson Federal Building in Seattle. The two-day seminar is an opportunity to discuss the latest in spill-recovery theory and technology. The sessions focus on topics including remote oil sensing technology, sinking oils, software tools and best practices. "In the response business, there is no room for complacency,” said Capt. Robert Pearce, chief of response, Coast Guard 13th District. “Knowing about the latest game-changing technology is important. Opportunities are everywhere. The marine environment that dominates the Pacific Northwest is essential to the high quality of our lives.

Oil Spill Response in Seattle's Salmon Bay

The U.S. Coast Guard and Washington State Department of Ecology continue to oversee the cleanup and investigate the cause of an oil spill that appeared earlier this week in the Ballard Mill Marina, on Salmon Bay, along the Lake Washington Ship Canal. The Coast Guard and Ecology received reports Monday morning of oil, accompanied by strong petroleum odors in the waters. No one has come forward to take responsibility for the spill, and the Coast Guard has utilized the federal Oil Spill Liability Trust Fund to hire Global Diving and Salvage to conduct the cleanup. The Coast Guard and Ecology have established a unified command to plan and oversee cleanup work.

Vice Adm. Neffenger Becomes Vice Commandant

U.S. Coast Guard Vice Adm. Peter Neffenger relieved Vice Adm. John Currier as Vice Commandant of the Coast Guard during a change of watch ceremony at U.S. Coast Guard Headquarters, Washington, D.C., Tuesday. Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Bob Papp presided over the ceremony and U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson attended. “It has been my honor to serve our nation as the vice commandant,” said Currier. The change-of-watch ceremony is a time-honored event preserved by rich heritage of naval tradition.

Salerno Appointed to NAMEPA BoD

Recently Retired USCG VADM Brian Salerno joins NAMEPA Board of Directors; Salerno’s Marine Safety History a Plus for the Association’s Future. The North American Marine Environment Protection Association Founding Chairman, Clay Maitland, announced that United States Coast Guard Vice Admiral Brian Salerno (Ret.) will join its Board effective immediately. VADM Salerno recently retired from the Coast Guard where he was Deputy Commandant for Operations. “NAMEPA is thrilled that VADM Salerno is joining our efforts to ‘Save our Seas’” enthused Maitland.

United States Coast Guard Assistant Commandant for Prevention Policy Marine Safety Advisory 01-12 June 21, 2012 Washington, DC; Recommendations for Recreational Diving Operations Occurring from Commercial Passenger Vessels. This advisory is addressed to Passenger Vessel Operators, Owners and Crewmembers providing commercial transport and support services to recreational divers, and reminds them of safety responsibilities to themselves and their passengers. Additionally, this advisory is intended to provide recommendations and lessons learned from recreational diving casualty investigations, and promote awareness of industry best practices.

F/V Deep Sea Refloated

Global Diving & Salvage, Inc. successfully rigged and refloated the sunken 140-foot fishing vessel. The abandoned and derelict fishing vessel Deep Sea, while at anchor in Penn Cove, WA, caught fire and sank in 60 feet of water. The U.S. Coast Guard and Washington State Department of Ecology (DOE) responded and deployed boom to contain the leaking fuel oil in an effort to protect the world renowned mussel and clam fishery in the cove. Global Diving & Salvage, Inc. was contracted by the DOE to raise the 140-foot wreck and mitigate the pollution hazard from the cove.

AMS Annual Membership Conference & Awards

The October 7th Annual Membership Conference for members of American Maritime Safety, Inc., was not officially billed as a 23rd anniversary event. Nevertheless, the story of AMS, an organization established by a group of U.S. based vessel owners and operators, is worthy of special mention. Indeed, this New York based Maritime Consortium has rapidly expanded in scope since its founding in 1988. From humble beginnings in New York, AMS has grown to over 400 vessel owners and operators and is now recognized as the leading industry association on regulatory compliance in the U.S.

Are You Inadvertently Operating on Different AIS Channel?

Between July 27 and August, 2010, while conducting development testing of its Nationwide Automatic Identification System (NAIS), the Coast Guard inadvertently tele-commanded most AIS users transiting the Eastern United States between lower Connecticut and North Carolina to switch to AIS frequencies other than the AIS default frequencies (161.975 MHz - Channel 87B - 2087 and 162.025 MHz - Channel 88B - 2088). WSF Bremerton on One-Boat Schedule

Washington State Ferries (WSF) announced that the Seattle/Bremerton ferry route is operating with one vessel after one of the route’s two vessels was pulled from service early in the morning on Feb. 8. The 144-car Yakima sustained damage and began taking on water after a hard landing and was immediately removed from service. The U.S. Coast Guard and Washington State Ferries are both conducting investigations into the incident. Details will be released when more information is known.

USCG Hosts Workshop on Maritime Security

The two-day workshop on maritime security, hosted by the U.S. Coast Guard in Washington, was completed with members of diverse sectors of the maritime industry offering a variety of suggestions for improvements and areas of concern related to maritime security. A listing of the recommendations is scheduled to be released by the Coast Guard on February 4, with the final report scheduled for February 28. Written comments may be submitted to the docket through March 15. Meanwhile, maritime security will be the major focus of the National Harbor Safety Committee meeting in Galveston on March 4. Coast Guard Station to Host Ground Breaking Ceremony

U.S. Coast Guard Station Washington, D.C., will host a groundbreaking ceremony at Bolling Air Force Base on Wednesday. The future facility on the grounds of Bolling AFB will provide Station Washington crew members the infrastructure required to sustain and support their mission in the National Capital Region. Over the past three years the men and women of Station Washington have pioneered ports, waterways, and coastal security operations in the capital region while operating out of portable trailer. This new facility will provide the crew enhanced operational capabilities in the NCR while providing state of the art equipment to allow for sustained command and control, deterrence, detection and prevention of further terrorist attacks in the waters around our nation's capital.

Rear Admiral Hereth to Lead Rita Effort

President George W. Bush has declared under the Stafford Act that an emergency exists in the State of Texas and the State of Louisiana, and ordered federal aid to supplement State and local response and recovery efforts in the areas affected by Hurricane Rita. That declaration effectively characterizes Hurricane Rita as an Incident of National Significance under the National Response Plan (NRP). In accordance with the guidance provided in the NRP, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff has designated Rear Admiral Larry Hereth, U.S. Coast Guard, as Principal Federal Official (PFO) for incident management purposes during the response and recovery operations for Hurricane Rita in Texas.
