Looking back, it is easy to wonder if one could have done better by taking the other fork in the road. I grew up in Holland in a maritime family and am pretty sure I would have stuck with maritime there. In 1968, when I was 8 years old, my father left Holland America Line and joined the United States Salvage Association. At the same time, their main customer, the U.S. marine insurance industry, became heavily involved in the development of North Sea offshore oil and gas, and it resulted in an economic boom that made USSA’s Rotterdam office wildly profitable.

Thomas Chance founded C & C Technologies in his home in 1992. Today C & C is a global oil field surveying and mapping company with more than 550 employees in ten offices worldwide. C & C was the first company in the world to offer autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) survey services to the oil industry and remains a world leader in the field. In April of 2015, he sold C & C Technologies to Oceaneering International. Complementing the autonomous underwater vehicle business, Mr. Chance started Autonomous Surface Vehicles, Ltd., or ASV, in 2010. ASV has 140 employees, four offices across the globe and has built more than 100 state-of-the-art unmanned boats for the defense and commercial sectors.

The Marshall Islands Move to Head of the Class

Leveraging 27 worldwide offices, the RMI Registry has been gaining market share year-on-year. Surging tonnage and a solid record for safety has pushed the registry to the head of the class. When the Marshall Islands Registry announced that it had become the world’s second largest – at a whopping 223,262,177 deadweight tons – the registry’s leadership was quick to emphasize quality as the leading reason. International Registries (IRI) President Bill Gallagher didn’t discount the importance of the deadweight milestone, but quickly moved the conversation towards why it had happened. With as many as 450 worldwide employees – the vast majority of them full time employees – IRI has done just that.

MHIA Relocates to Houston

ST Engineering Injects $66m into VT Systems

Singapore Technologies Engineering Ltd (ST Engineering) today announced that it has injected US$66m (approximately S$89m) into the capital of its US Headquarters, Vision Technologies Systems, Inc. (VT Systems), for the repayment of bank loans. This brings ST Engineering’s total investment in VT Systems to US$343.96m (approximately S$464m). Following the capital injection above, VT Systems has capitalised its outstanding loan balance of US$35.28m (approximately S$47m) and US$33.08m (approximately S$44m) in its subsidiaries, Vision Technologies Kinetics, Inc. and Vision Technologies Land Systems Inc respectively. Vision Technologies Land Systems has, in turn, capitalised its outstanding loan balance of US$33.08m (approximately S$44m) in its subsidiary, VT Hackney Inc.

Viega Relocates Its US Headquarters

Viega LLC announced that it will move its North American headquarters to Broomfield, Colorado, where it will build a new headquarters and educational training facility, with construction set to begin this summer. Relocation activities will begin immediately, to temporary office space, with the move completed by December 31, 2017. Viega LLC employs nearly 500 people in North America, with a central manufacturing and distribution center in McPherson, Kansas, as well as distribution centers in Nevada, Georgia and Pennsylvania, and another educational training facility in New Hampshire.

POSCO Plans Port Plant at Indiana-Jeffersonville

POSCO, a multinational company headquartered in Pohang, South Korea, and the fifth-largest steel producer in the world, has announced plans to build a wire rod processing center at the Port of Indiana-Jeffersonville, creating up to 60 high-wage jobs by 2018. DNV GL Tackles Safety through Standards

New classification rules for U.S. fishing vessels address safety issues through collaboration, new rules and an eye towards economy. The commercial fishing industry fatality rate is 30 times higher than the average of other US industries. According to an analysis of commercial fishing fatalities for the period 2000 – 2009 conducted by the Alaska Pacific Regional Office of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), vessel disasters account for 51 percent of fatalities, with the top two initiating events cited as flooding (25 percent) and instability (16 percent).

NV Charts Relocates US Headquarters

Launch of Mississippi River Cruise Service

Governor Bobby Jindal and Viking Cruises Chairman Torstein Hagen announced the selection of New Orleans as the homeport for Viking River Cruises’ first North American river cruise itineraries. The Mississippi River cruises will operate from docking facilities near the French Quarter in New Orleans. Viking’s new service will result in the creation of 416 new direct jobs for Louisiana-based operations and vessel crews, with an average salary of $40,000, plus benefits; and Louisiana Economic Development estimates the project will result in an additional 368 new indirect jobs, for a total of more than 780 new jobs in the Southeast Region of the state.

ST Engineering Streamlines Its Entities

Singapore Technologies Engineering Ltd (ST Engineering) today announced that Visiontech Investment Pte Ltd (Visiontech Investment), a wholly owned subsidiary of ST Engineering’s aerospace arm, Singapore Technologies Aerospace Ltd, has applied to the Accounting and Corporate Regulatory Authority in Singapore to strike off its name from the Register of Companies pursuant to Section 344 of the Companies Act, Chapter 50. Visiontech Investment was incorporated in 1990 and has been a dormant company since 2008. Meanwhile, Vision Technologies Aerospace Incorporated (VT Aerospace), a wholly owned subsidiary of Vision Technologies Systems, Inc. (VT Systems), the US headquarters of ST Engineering, has converted ST Aerospace San Antonio, L.P.

McMurdo Completes Techno-Sciences Acquisition

Strategic acquisition validates Orolia's McMurdo Group as premier supplier of COSPAS-SARSAT search and rescue solutions, establishes U.S. McMurdo Group, a global company in end-to-end search and rescue (SAR) and maritime domain awareness (MDA) solutions, today announced the successful acquisition of Techno-Sciences, Inc. (TSi), a provider of SAR satellite ground stations, integrated emergency response center systems and coastal surveillance solutions. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. TSi’s Beltsville, Maryland location becomes the U.S. Headquarters for McMurdo Group, a division of Orolia (NYSE Alternext Paris – FR0010501015 – ALORO), global specialist in critical Global Navigation Satellite System solutions.
