With passage of the Inflation Reduction Act, which contains US$370 billion for climate and energy programs, policy experts are forecasting a big expansion in clean electricity generation. One source that’s poised for growth is offshore wind power.Today the U.S. has just two operating offshore wind farms, off of Rhode Island and Virginia, with a combined generating capacity of 42 megawatts. For comparison, the new Traverse Wind Energy Center in Oklahoma has 356 turbines and a 998-megawatt generating capacity.

Shipping Giants Will Plot Course for Landbound M&A

© sheilaf2002 / Adobe Stock

Shipping giants are heading for port, but not in the traditional sense. Companies like Denmark’s A.P. Moller-Maersk and Germany’s Hapag-Lloyd are riding a record valuation wave thanks to a year of sky-high container rates. Gobbling up land-based logistics rivals would be one use for the cash burning a hole in their pockets. It would also serve as a handy buffer against future supply-chain crunches.Pandemic upheaval has benefitted the shipping industry. Government support, such as checks mailed out to U.S. households, fueled a consumer spending spree. Freight rates have soared.

Rates Slowdown in Permian Basin

Though the Permian Basin still dominates US land drilling, the pace of growth in this region has slowed significantly.Older tight oil wells decline by 20% per year without material intervention, according to Rystad Energy.Contrary to common belief, the Permian Basin systematically offers the lowest oil decline rates, along with the Bakken Shale. In turn, the Eagle Ford and DJ basins exhibit steeper decline rates throughout the first eight years of production across most vintages.Rystad Energy has examined all horizontal oil-producing wells in the Bakken, Eagle Ford, Permian and DJ Basins, turned-in-line between 2011 and 2017 with at least 24 months of reported production. The resulting sample includes 146,158 annualized production data points from 46,188 wells.

Large or Small, Land or Sea, Every Spill Matters.

There is growing concern regarding the environmental impact and associated costs of petroleum based fluid discharges. Petroleum is persistent and toxic. It damages living organisms including plants, animals and marine life for many years. While many believe that the bulk of this environmental damage is done by major spills, such as the Exxon Valdez or the Deepwater Horizon events, in reality, every spill matters. In fact, small leaks account for an overwhelming percentage of oil-related pollution. • Industry spills alone contribute more than 9 million gallons of oil to U.S.

US Oil Drillers Add Rigs for 7th Week in a Row

U.S. drillers this week added oil rigs for a seventh consecutive week, according to a closely followed report on Friday, even as analysts revise down rig count growth forecasts and energy firms become more cautious the longer crude holds below $50 a barrel. Drillers added 15 oil rigs in the week to Aug. 12, bringing the total rig count up to 396, compared with 672 a year ago, energy services firm Baker Hughes Inc said. That is the longest streak of rig additions since April 2014 when U.S. oil futures averaged over $100 a barrel. Since July 1, drillers have added 66 oil rigs. "We expect the rig count could stall or even decline due to seasonal drilling activity declines and recent commodity pull back," analysts at U.S.

Panama Opens Canal Extension Amid Risk, Cost Issues

Panama opened the long-delayed $5.4 billion expansion of its shipping canal amid cheering crowds on Sunday, despite looming economic uncertainty in the shipping industry and a heated battle over billions in cost overruns. At 7.50 a.m. (1250 GMT), the Chinese container ship "Cosco Shipping Panama" entered the Agua Clara lock on the Atlantic to begin the first crossing of the roughly 50-mile-long (80.45-km-long) waterway and was due to emerge on the Pacific side by 5.00 p.m. (2200 GMT). The expansion, which triples the size of ships that can travel the canal, allows the country to host 98 percent of the world's shipping and is aimed at wresting market share from rival Suez and U.S. land routes made cheaper by low oil prices.

US Oil Rig Count Steady for First Time This Year

U.S. energy firms this week kept the number of rigs drilling for oil unchanged for the first time this year, services company Baker Hughes Inc said on Friday, as crude futures trade near a seven-month high. Drillers kept the number of rigs at 318 in the week to May 20, holding at the lowest level since October 2009, Baker Hughes said in its closely followed report. Prior to this week, drillers added only one rig so far this year during the week of March 18. On average, they cut 11 oil rigs per week for a total of 218 so far this year. The number of U.S. oil rigs currently operating compares with the 659 rigs operating in the same week a year ago.

US Oil Drillers Cut Rigs for 10th Straight Week

U.S. energy firms this week cut oil rigs for an 10th week in a row to the lowest levels since December 2009, data showed on Friday, as some producers focus more on completing their drilled but uncompleted wells instead of drilling new ones. Looking forward, analysts forecast the rig count will bottom in a few months before recovering later this year when they expect crude prices to rise. Drillers removed 13 oil rigs in the week ended Feb. 26, bringing the total rig count down to 400, oil services company Baker Hughes Inc said in its closely followed report. That compares with 986 oil rigs operating in same week a year ago. In 2015, drillers cut on average 18 rigs per week for a total of 963 oil rigs for the year, the biggest annual decline since at least 1988.

Commercial Cargo Pilot Seeks U.S.-Mexico Security

The many years of concern about the commercial Mexican-U.S. cross-border practices which slow down the movement of cross-border cargo and security implications, especially because of the drug cartel involvement in these movements, and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) concern for accuracy in cargo identification and their own need to know how efficiently cargo moves through Customs facilities, there is now taking place a cross-border project developed, directed and funded by the private sector to address these concerns. Because of the importance of security, visibility, control and efficiency in international shipments and its importance to the United States, six major U.S.

Tests on New Technology To Secure Cargo Movement

U.S. Transportation Secretary Norman Y. Mineta announced the successful completion of a test of new technology that will help to secure cargo containers entering ports and border crossings throughout the United States. The test, carried out through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) program, involved the use of electronic seals (E-Seals), a radio frequency device that transmits shipment information as it passes reader devices and indicates if a container has been compromised. “This new technology will help to enhance the security of our nation’s transportation system by enabling us to track cargo shipments into the United States,” Secretary Mineta said.
