Subsea GofM Acoustic Experiments Begin

US Naval Surface Warfare Center with Office of Naval Research (ONR) &  academia, is participating in a multi-country, acoustic scattering experiment in the Gulf of Mexico until June 2013. The test event dubbed TREX is a Target Reverberation Experiment with the key objective to understand how undersea environments impact the acoustic signature of a target. The collected data will be compared to sophisticated, physic-based, propagation and target scattering models. TREX is also being referred to as Gulf of Mexico Exercise 2013, or GULFEX13.

Maersk Line Awarded Navy Energy Conservation Contract

Maersk Line, Limited (MLL) has been awarded a contract by the U.S. Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division (NSWCCD), to assess and apply Advanced Waste Heat Recovery (AWHR) technology to Military Sealift Command (MSC) ships. The contract involves a two-phase approach. In phase one, MLL will conduct a detailed analysis to determine which MSC ships will generate the greatest return on investment from the use of AWHR technology. Based on the findings, MLL may then lead the installation of such systems in phase two. AWHR systems capture energy from the hot exhaust of ship engines and use the heat as a source of power to reduce fuel consumption, which is a ship's single largest operating cost. The systems also cut emission of CO2, sulfur and nitrous oxides, and particulate matter.

VSE Comments Further on SeaPort Enhanced Contract Award

VSE Corporation reported that its Fleet Maintenance Division was awarded a contract by the U.S. Naval Surface Warfare Center, Dahlgren Division. The contract, entitled SeaPort Enhanced ("SeaPort-e"), is a multiple award, indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity contract, and accordingly, actual VSE revenue estimates for the contract cannot be predicted. VSE understands that the Navy awarded SeaPort-e contracts to VSE and about 150 other contractors. By receiving this award, VSE and its subcontractors are prequalified to bid on up to $1.3 billion annually of work which is expected to become available to support the requirements of the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA), the Naval Surface Warfare Centers (NSWCs), and the Naval Undersea Warfare Centers (NUWCs).

NOAA Research Vessel Exceeds Standards as Quiet Vessel

The newly constructed National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration fishery survey vessel Henry B. Bigelow has exceeded international standards as an acoustically quiet vessel, according to a report released by the U.S. Navy. NOAA received the results from a battery of underwater acoustic tests done by the Navy on the ship at the Atlantic Undersea Test and Evaluation Center on Andros Island in the Bahamas. “Henry B. Bigelow is one of only a handful of research ships in the world that have met this high standard as a quiet research vessel,” said retired Navy Vice Adm. Conrad C. Rolls-Royce to Power Demonstrator for DD(X)
