Eastern Shipbuilding to Build New Hopper Dredge for the USACE

Panama City, Fla. based Eastern Shipbuilding Group has been awarded a contract to design and build a new hopper dredge for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.The $256,955,264 firm-fixed-price contract will see Eastern design and build the new medium-class hopper dredge (MCHD) for scheduled delivery in August 2027. Eastern was one of three bidders for the project.The new 6,000-cubic-yard-capacity hopper dredge will replace the USACE Philadelphia District's high-powered deep draft hopper dredge McFarland, built in 1967.

USACE Awarded a Slew of Dredging Work in the First Half of 2023

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) is snapping back from the doldrums of COVID-19, wrapping up a strong first half of 2023 with a slew of awarded dredging work.“The federal government is no different from state and local governments, nor the private sector when it comes to COVID-19 work related recovery and USACE is not an exception,” said William P. Bristol Harbor Group Wins USACE IDC Contract

Bristol Harbor Group, Inc. (BHGI) won an Indefinite Delivery Contract (IDC) for naval architecture and marine engineering services for the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Philadelphia District, Marine Design Center. This contract continues BHGI’s partnership with the Marine Design Center (MDC). Some of the projects BHGI has worked on for the USACE include, but are not limited to, retrofits, finite element analyses, electric load analyses, vibration analyses, computational fluid dynamics analyses, as well as barge, towboat and dredge design.In partnership since 2010, BHGI and the MDC team have worked on a wide variety of projects both for the USACE and other federal agencies, including the United States Coast Guard, NASA, and the National Park Service.

USACE Orders Foil-assisted Survey Catamaran

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) has awarded a contract to All American Marine, Inc. (AAM) for the design and construction of a new hydrofoil supported aluminum catamaran survey vessel. The new vessel will replace the aging survey boat, Shuman, to primarily perform survey missions and some dive operations in support of dredging work planned within the Corps’ Philadelphia District. The 68- by 26-foot custom aluminum catamaran will be designed by Auckland, New Zealand firm Teknicraft Design, Ltd., for whom AAM is the exclusive in North America builder.

Delaware River Main Channel Deepening Project Justified

After an economic reanalysis, the United States Army Corps of Engineers announced that Delaware River Main Channel Deepening Project is justified for construction. The conclusion of the reanalysis is that the project will yield a net benefit of $1.18 for every $1 spent on the project. Maj. Gen. Robert Griffin, director of Civil Works for USACE, said, "Our comprehensive economic reanalysis shows that the Delaware River Main Channel Deepening Project is a sound investment for the nation. "The reanalysis has been thoroughly reviewed by an external independent panel. That panel determined the reanalysis to be based on sound economics. Work on the Delaware project was suspended by Griffin on April 22…

Bids Requested for Barges

The Marine Design Center (MDC) of the USACE intends to acquire four new inland river-style barges to serve the Pittsburgh District, in support of the Maintenance and Repair Mission on the Inland Rivers System. The first barge shall be 190 x 54 x 12.5 ft., and will be used as a floating platform for a king-post mounted Seatrax crane, which will be furnished to the successful bidder as Government Furnished Equipment (GFE) after contract award. The three remaining flat deck barges shall be 110 x 26 x 7 ft. All four vessels shall be of all-welded steel construction, and shall be designed, built and classed to ABS rules for Steel Vessels on Rivers and Intracoastal Waterways. The bid package became available in July, and bid opening is planned for early August, 1999.

Repowering and Upgrades to Potter

The Marine Design Center (MDC) of the USACE intends to accomplish repowering, upgrade, and repairs to dredge Potter, a USACE dustpan dredge. The vessel length overall is 240.5 ft., beam overall is 46.1 ft. and molded depth amidships is 9 ft.. Vessel displacement (light) is 1,393 tons. Dredge Potter is a steam powered dustpan dredge constructed in 1932, and operated by the St. Louis District, USACE. The vessel is of all steel, riveted and welded construction. The vessel shall be converted from steam power to diesel electric along with the upgrade/replacement of necessary support systems. Drydocking is necessary to complete required underwater stern modifications. Testing is required and will include dredging trials.
