Injured Fisherman Medevaced off Alaska

An injured mariner was medevaced by U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) personnel near Sand Point, Wednesday, the USCG reported. Watchstanders at USCG District 17 command center received a report that a mariner aboard 48-foot fishing vessel Capt-Jay was suffering from a head injury. Watchstanders then consulted with the duty flight surgeon who recommended immediate medevac. A USCG Air Station Kodiak MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew flew 230 miles from Kodiak, hoisted the 28-year-old man from the fishing vessel, and transported him to Sand Point.

New Captain for USCG Air Station Cape Cod

Capt. Timothy Tobiasz assumed the duties and responsibilities as commanding officer of Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod, Massachusetts, from Capt. Stephen H. Torpey during a change of command ceremony at the air station in Bourne, Massachusetts, Saturday. Rear Adm. Linda L. Fagan, commander of the 1st Coast Guard District, presided over the ceremony. The change-of-command ceremony is a time-honored tradition which formally restates the continuity of authority vested in the commanding officer to the officers and crew in attendance. This unique military ritual represents a total transfer of responsibility, authority, and accountability from one leader to the next. Tobiasz reports to Air Station Cape Cod after serving as the senior U.S. Coast Guard advisor to the combatant commander of U.S.

USCG Aids Fishing Boat Taking on Water

A U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) Air Station Kodiak MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew assisted the crew of the fishing vessel Alaskan Pride after they began taking on water in Izhut Bay near Kodiak Island, Alaska, Thursday. The Jayhawk crew lowered a dewatering pump to the crew of the fishing vessel, which allowed them to control the onboard flooding and proceed to port in Kodiak. Coast Guard Sector Anchorage watchstanders received a report from the crew aboard the 35-foot fishing vessel Alaskan Pride that their vessel had a possible puncture in its bow and requested Coast Guard assistance once their pumps could no longer keep up with the flooding. The Jayhawk crew responded and delivered the dewatering pump.

Japanese Student Overboard in the Pacific

U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) search operations continue for a student reported overboard from a Japanese training vessel approximately 70 miles southwest of Kauai, Tuesday. USCG said its watchstanders at the Coast Guard Sector Honolulu Command Center were notified at 9:56 a.m., regarding a 17-year-old male Japanese national who was reported overboard from the 208-foot Japanese training vessel Hokuho Maru during transit from Honolulu to Japan. The man was last seen at approximately 2:50 a.m., and was reported missing after he did not show up for muster. He was last seen wearing a light green jumpsuit, and it is unknown whether he was wearing a life jacket.

Mariner Medevaced from Bulker near Alaska

A U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) helicopter crew medevaced a mariner from a 623-foot bulk carrier located approximately 75 miles southeast of Cold Bay, Alaska, Sunday. Coast Guard 17th District Command Center watchstanders received a call from the crew of ALLSEAS MARINE S.A.’s bulk carrier Mykonos Seas requesting medical assistance for an injured crewmember. The duty flight surgeon recommended the medevac, and the USCG Air Station Kodiak MH-60 Jayhawk crew was launched out of Cold Bay to conduct the rescue. The helicopter crew hoisted the mariner and transferred him to commercial medical services in Cold Bay for further transport to Anchorage and additional medical care. "This case illustrates the importance of forward deploying our hoist capable helicopters in Alaska," said Lt. Cmdr.

Two Rescued from Disabled Boat near Niagara Falls

The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG ) rescued two people from a disabled boat near Niagara Falls late Monday night. At about 9:15 p.m., a search-and-rescue (SAR) coordinator from USCG Sector Buffalo, New York, responded to a call for help from the boaters via cell phone. The distressed boater reported two people were aboard a disabled 19-foot boat, 700 yards inside the Niagara Falls Exclusion Zone. The boater also reported that the boat was anchored. The Sector Buffalo SAR coordinator issued an urgent marine information broadcast, which broadcasts the location and nature of distress to mariners and asks who can offer help if they are able. The SAR coordinator also launched a rescue boat crew from Coast Guard Station Buffalo aboard a 25-foot response boat…

USCG Deploys Personnel, Assets to Cordova

U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) Air Station Kodiak deployed an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew and support personnel to their seasonal forward operating location in Cordova, Alaska, to safeguard mariners in Prince William Sound and South Central Alaska, Thursday. With an increased number of vessels operating in the region during the spring and summer, the deployed Coast Guard aircrew will be able to rapidly respond to mariners in need of assistance. “Our strategically placed forward deployed assets and crews allow us to significantly decrease our response time during a distress call,” said Lt. Cmdr. Douglas Watson, the Coast Guard 17th District Command Center chief.

Mariner Medevaced near Alaska

A U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) Air Station Kodiak MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew, forward deployed in Cold Bay, medevaced a mariner from the 680-foot fish processing vessel Ocean Phoenix 85 miles northwest of Cold Bay, Tuesday, the USCG reported. The helicopter crew transported the man to the Cold Bay where they were met by commercial medevac services for further transport to Providence Medical Center in Anchorage. Watchstanders at the Coast Guard 17th District command center in Juneau received the request for medevac from the master of the Ocean Phoenix when a crewman suffered a severe injury to his left hand. The Coast Guard duty flight surgeon was contacted and concurred with the need for the medevac.

Coast Guard Crews Rescue Tanker Crewman

A U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) Air Station Borinquen MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew evacuated an ailing mariner from a tanker vessel approximately 50 nautical miles north of San Juan Harbor, Puerto Rico, early Tuesday morning. The helicopter crew safely transported the man to emergency medical services at Centro Medico Hospital in San Juan. Coast Guard Sector San Juan command center watchstanders received a request for assistance from the crew of the 600-foot tanker Champion Cornelia early Monday morning while the vessel was approximately 300 nautical miles north of Puerto Rico.

Top of Lighthouse Delivered by USCG

The cupola of the Ship Island Lighthouse was delivered and placed on the top of the lighthouse this morning by a helicopter from USCG Air Station New Orleans. The 900 lbs. copula was placed on the newly reconstructed lighthouse. The friends of the National Seashore Foundation, National Park Service and the Naval Seabee's are coordinating the project. Over the last six months, USCG Station Gulfport and Aids to Navigation Team Gulfport assisted in the delivery of supplies and personnel to the island for the project. There has been a lighthouse on Ship Island, Miss. since 1850's. At that time a predecessor of the modern Day Coast Guard, the U.S. Lighthouse Service, manned it. The lighthouse stood at the spot until is was accidentally burned down in 1971.
