HHI BWMS Earns US Type Approval

The U.S. Coast Guard said it has issued type approval to Hyundai Heavy Industries' HiBallast NF ballast water management system.The type approval is the 45th granted by the USCG's Marine Safety Center, awarded following a detailed review of the manufacturer’s type approval application determined the system met the requirements of 46 CFR 162.060The treatment principle of the HiBallast NF BWMS consists of electrolysis treatment during uptake and neutralization at discharge. Techcross ECS-A BWMS Earns USCG Type Approval

South Korea-based ballast water management system manufacturer Techcross said its discontinued ECS-A system has been approved in addition to Techcross ECS in the updated approval status of U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) Marine Safety Center (MSC). This means that Techcross, which sells electrolysis-based ECS and ECS-HYCHLOR, has also obtained a new USCG type approval for ECS-A, which is the initial model of ECS.ECS-A received International Maritime Organization (IMO) basic approval the first in the world in 2006.

Optimarin Scores Big Win with USCG OPC Program

Eastern Shipbuilding Group (ESG) has selected Optimarin to supply the ballast water treatment systems (BWTS) for nine Offshore Patrol Cutters (OPC) to be built for the U.S. Coast Guard at the builder's Panama City, Fla. shipyard.The agreement with ESG will see the Optimarin Ballast Systems (OBS) fitted in the new OPCs, designed to support the nation's maritime security and undertake vital border protection duties. Responding to “The Articulated Tug Barge (ATB) Quandary”

I read with great dismay, the article that appeared in your magazine’s February 2013 issue, entitled “THE ARTICULATED TUG BARGE (ATB) QUANDRY”. noun, plural quandaries : a state of perplexity or uncertainty, especially as to what to do; dilemma. There is no dilemma involving AT/B’s present in the coastwise or ocean transportation marketplace. AT/B’s are indeed increasingly supplanting ships in the Jones Act coastal trade. It is a trend that is slowly beginning to spread to coastwise transport in other regions of the world as well.

BHMD Introduces Latest Design

Bristol Harbor Marine Design (BHMD) introduced their newest design, the Liberty 129TM fast ferry, at the International Workboat Show held in New Orleans in December. From the keel up, Liberty 129TM is an all-American design. It is 129-ft. (39.3-m) in length, has a 36-ft. (11.0-m) beam and includes interior seating for 321 passengers. powered by either twin or quad diesel powered water jets. It is designed for high-speed commuter ferry runs. BHMD has wrapped up all but a few minor details for this new design. It is ready for licensing and production. at the Marine Hydrodynamics Laboratory at the University of Michigan (U of M) confirmed vessel design speed in excess of 32 knots. modeling has optimized the final designs for ease of production.
