The U.S. Navy has a balanced fleet, but it wants to grow bigger and better. Will the budget allow both? Maritime Reporter's March 2017 cover story on the U.S. Navy was all about the numbers. There exists several plans to grow the fleet beyond the current number of 308 ships, the Mitre recommendation of 414 ships, the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessment 340-ship proposal, and the Navy’s decision to grow the fleet to 355 ships, and the Trump administration’s 350. With so many numbers being bandied about, there are even more suggestions on how to get there.

Amphibious transport dock ship USS Green Bay (LPD 20), with embarked 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), officially kicked off Exercise Cobra Gold 2017 (CG 17) in Sattahip, Thailand, Feb. 14. Cobra Gold is a Thailand/United States co-sponsored, combined task force and joint theater security cooperation exercise conducted annually in the Kingdom of Thailand. CG 17 will be held Feb. 14-24, with up to 29 nations participating. CG 17, in its 36th iteration, will address regional and global security challenges and will promote international cooperation and stability within the region. Amphibious transport dock ship USS Green Bay (LPD 20) rendered assistance to distressed mariners in the waters between the Indonesian islands of Kalimantan and Sulawesi June 19. Shipboard lookouts first spotted the distressed mariners waving a black flag approximately 3 to 5 nautical miles from the ship, their raft surrounded by fuel and debris. Once Green Bay was in proximity to the craft, the ship launched a small boat to provide immediate assistance. "To be able to render assistance to mariners in distress is a fundamental maritime skill," said Rear Adm. Hugh Wetherald, commander of Expeditionary Strike Group 7. "The Sailors and Marines of the strike group were trained and ready.

USS Peleliu (LHA 5) returned to Naval Base San Diego Dec. 24 from a six-month deployment to the Western Pacific. Upon return, the ship will make preparations to decommission in March after 34 years of service, 17 deployments and more than a million miles transited, and as the last remaining Tarawa-class amphibious assault ship. Great Lakes Dock and Materials LLC, Muskegon, Mich., has been awarded a firm-fixed-price, non-option eligible, non-multi-year US ACE contract for $7,461,751 for the repair of 0.5 miles of breakwater at Cleveland Harbor. FLIR Systems Inc., Billerica, Mass., has been awarded a $49,852,526 firm-fixed-price, indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract on Sept. 19, 2013, for the Patrol Boat Electro-Optics System (PB-EOS) for the U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Navy. The primary mission of the PB-EOS is to provide enhanced visual imagery to augment existing electronic sensors. Use of the PB-EOS will enhance the following: low visibility and night navigation…

The US Department of Defense has awarded a Navy contract for the LPD 17-class warship modernization. BAE San Diego Ship Repair, San Diego, Calif., is being awarded a $15,361,658 modification to previously awarded contract (N00024-10-C-4407) to exercise an option for the USS Green Bay (LPD 20) fiscal 2013 dry-docking selected restricted availability. This option exercise is for the multi-ship, multi-option program for the LPD 17 class. BAE San Diego Ship Repair will provide planning, repair, alteration and material support services for LPD 17class modernization.

The future USS Anchorage (LPD 23) launched Feb. 12 from Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding's Avondale, La., shipyard, marking a key milestone in the ship's construction process. Due to extensive pre-outfitting efforts, Anchorage will be the most complete ship in the class at the time of launch. "We started construction on the first ship of the LPD 17 class 11 years ago." said Jay Stefany, LPD 17 program manager for the Navy's Program Executive Office (PEO) Ships. Anchorage is the seventh ship of the San Antonio-class of landing platform docks and is named for the largest city in Alaska. The ship's sponsor is Annette Conway, wife of U.S. Marine Corps Commandant Gen. James Conway. She will christen the ship this May in a traditional Navy ceremony.

On September 9, 2003, remnant steel from the World Trade Center twin towers will be cast into the future USS New York amphibious transport dock ship, LPD 21. The ship is named for the state of New York and recognizes the courage and commitment of New Yorkers during the 9/11 tragedy. Amite Foundry and Machine in Amite, LA, a subcontractor to the shipbuilder Northrop Grumman Ship Systems, will perform the casting. Thousands of pounds of steel transported from the debris field in Staten Island, NY, will be melted down and poured into the bow stem cast of New York. As part of the bow, the stem and WTC steel will always be the first part of the ship to sail into future 21st Century expeditionary warfare missions.

Citizens of “Titletown” rolled out the red carpet for their city’s namesake ship, Pre-commissioning Unit (PCU) Green Bay (LPD 20), during several civic ceremonies June 25. Green Bay’s prospective commanding officer Cmdr. Calvin Slocumb and his planned relief, Cmdr. Joseph Olson traveled to Green Bay to strengthen the ship’s already strong ties to the community. Green Bay Mayor James J. Schmitt hosted the officers at the annual Kids Day Festival at Fisk Park. The amphibious transport dock ship USS San Antonio (LPD 17), the first in its class, gets assistance from a tugboat as it prepared to moor at its new homeport at Naval Station Norfolk, Va. in 2006. BAE Systems has been awarded a contract by the Naval Sea Systems Command for work on two LPD-17 San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock ships, USS New Orleans (LPD 18) and USS Green Bay (LPD 20). The three-year contract, with an initial value of $11.3 million, is for fitting out availability (FOA) and post shakedown availability (PSA) work on both ships from 2007-2009. Work on the USS New Orleans FOA, is tentatively scheduled to begin in May.

The future USS Green Bay LPD 20 was launched this week from the building ways at Northrop Grumman Ship Systems Avondale Operations. The fourth amphibious transport dock of the San Antonio class entered the Mississippi River on August 11. Green Bay’s launching represents important progress since Hurricane Katrina devastated the New Orleans area less than a year ago. With many of the shipyard’s workers still living in trailers or Camp Katrina," temporary living quarters” the ship was launched with 208 units welded and 166 tanks completed. Work will now continue in more than 900 compartments while progressing toward Electronic System Light Off this fall.
