GE Marine, a unit of GE Transportation, and the Panama Canal Authority (ACP) announced the start of the commissioning of 13 tugboats for use in the Panama Canal. The 26-engine order represents the largest in the history of GE Marine. The sale of the 12-cylinder V228 engines through GE's engine distributor Marinsa was finalized in October 2008. The vessels are being built by Cheoy Lee Shipyards of Hong Kong, the first of which arrived in Panama last week; all of the ships are scheduled to arrive by June 2012. In October, ACP celebrated the transit of the one millionth vessel through the Canal since its inauguration in 1914, and the new tugboats will be used to continue to transport tankers and barges through the Canal safely and efficiently.

GE Transportation will supply Marinsa, Panama, with 26 V228 diesel engines. The 12-cylinder engines will power 13 new tugboats to be used in the Panama Canal in Panama. “This is a significant order for GE, the largest we’ve received to date in Latin America. We faced stiff competition in the marketplace and are delighted that ultimately our V228 engines were selected for this project,” said John Manison, manager of GE Transportation’s marine and stationary power business, Erie, Pennsylvania. Marinsa is GE’s authorized distributor in Latin America.

“We believe there is strong demand for a hybrid technology to improve fuel efficiency and to help customers comply with increasingly stringent emissions regulations. By combining our core expertise, GE and the C-MAR Group can effectively meet customer needs with this new hybrid technology,” Manison added. GE Marine announces that it will supply IML Power, , with eight V228 medium-speed diesel engines. The 16-cylinder engines will power four new, UT755L-type offshore platform supply vessels. IML Power is an authorized distributor of GE diesel engines and services in . The vessels will be constructed by Rosetti Marino S.p.A. Each of the four new ships will be powered by two 16V228 engines, each rated at 2790 kilowatts (kW) at 955 rpm. The engines will be manufactured at GE’s state-of-the-art , facility.

GE Marine announced it will provide Conrad Industries, Inc., , with two 8 cylinder V228 medium-speed diesel engines through NREC Power Systems, a GE authorized dealer. The engines will power a passenger/vehicle ferry designed by Alan C. McClure Associates, Inc. and Schuller & Allan LLC, both of . The ferry is being built by Conrad Industries for the Texas Department of Transportation, Austin. Van Isle Barge Services, Ltd. (VIBS) announces that its Van Isle Link and Sealink Pusher articulated tug-barge combination (ATB) has been placed into service rotation after successfully completing sea trials off the coast of Vancouver, British Columbia. This commercial drop trailer ATB is powered by two fuel efficient, V228 medium-speed diesel engines provided by GE Marine, Erie, Pa. Similar to others in VIBS’ fleet, the Van Isle Link/Sealink Pusher ATB provides cargo services between Vancouver and Vancouver Island. In fact, with the addition of this new ATB, VIBS provides 60% of Vancouver Island’s groceries. Remedial Offshore announced the purchase of V228 medium-speed diesel engines from GE Marine to power the new Remedial Offshore Elevating Support Vessels (ESVs). Reportedly the world’s first self-propelled, 325-foot nominal water depth-rated jack-up well intervention vessel, Remedial Offhore’s ESV design provides a hybrid between a jack-up drilling rig and a marine vessel. The new ESV concept offers versatility and operational functionality, ranging from an incorporated electric well workover package to a large open deck for offshore support functions.

GE Transportation announces that it has received United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Tier II emissions compliance certification for its V228 diesel engine family. In order for the EPA to grant Tier II compliance certification, GE submitted results from emissions testing conducted on its 8, 12 and 16 cylinder V228 engines at its Erie, Pa., facility. GE’s V228 family includes the 8V228, 12V228 and 16V228 engine configurations, for power ranges from 1,400 horsepower (hp)/1,004 kilowatts (kW) to 4,500 hp/3,355 kW. These four-stroke, turbo-charged and after-cooled medium-speed diesels are designed for the most demanding applications.
