Van der Velden Marine Systems: Innovating Efficiency
After celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2013, Van der Velden Marine Systems, a daughter company of the Damen Group, is not resting on its laurels as the Netherlands-based company’s R&D department works to continue advancing maritime maneuvering and propulsion efficiency. “We are currently building a 97m2 Energy Saving Package (ESPAC) system for a series of three 18,000 TEU vessels being built for CMA CGM at the CSSC-affiliated Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipyard in China,” said Edwin van Buren, Director R&D at Van der Velden Marine Systems.
Van der Velden in Pole Position for 'Ahoy Rotterdam 2013'
Van der Velden Maritime Systems will be showcasing a selection of their vessel propulsion products at upcoming 'Ahoy Rotterdam', 5-8, November 2013 at booth 1405 in Hall 1. The company has also been selected to participate in the Green Route. Van der Velden will present information, about its products including the Velden® FLEX tunnel manoeuvring and propulsion system, which is designed for inland and coastal ships, and offers tremendous advantages in the expansion of capacity, fuel consumption, speed and manoeuvrability.
This Day in U.S. Coast Guard History - May 16
1846-Eleven cutters were assigned to cooperate with Army and Navy in the Mexican War. Cutters McLane, Legare, Woodbury, Ewing, Forward, and Van Buren were assigned to the Army. Cutters Wolcott, Bibb, Morris, and Polk were assigned to the Navy. 1888-Secretary of Treasury was authorized to establish anchorage grounds New York Harbor, adopt suitable rules and "take all necessary measures" for their enforcement. New Executive VP for Van der Velden Marine Systems
Paul van Maanen (48) has joined Van der Velden® Marine Systems as Executive Vice President. He brings with him years of experience as a Managing Director in the shipbuilding and aircraft industries. Van Maanen will join the Corporate Executive Board and be co-responsible for the overall operation and management of the entire Van der Velden group of companies. He joins a four men strong Corporate Executive Board, which also includes Gerrit Spekman (CEO), Edwin van Buren (CTO) and Wiggert Pols (COO).
This Day in Coast Guard History – Dec. 15
1835-The superintendent of the lighthouse system wrote to Winslow Lewis, "I perceive by a Mobile paper which I received this morning that the Mobile Point light has been fitted by you as a revolving light" similar to the nearby Pensacola lighthouse. "I am very sorry that you have don so." Lewis was a contractor who -- almost by himself -- virtually controlled the administration of the lighthouse system. The incident helped cause a Congressional investigation that ultimately created a modern lighthouse system in this country. 1839-Near Gloucester, Massachusetts, a storm from the southeast caught and dragged ashore or drove to sea over fifty vessels.
