Dutch shipbuilding group Damen has signed its first contact with ballast water treatment systems (BWTS) manufacturer ERMA FIRST. The Greek manufacturer ERMA FIRST will supply its oneTANK, which is the world’s smallest BWTS, using chemical injection methods to clean ships’ ballast water.Damen Green Solutions has a broad selection of BWTS in its range, offering shipowners various capacities and techniques in treating their ballast water. WASP Sets Sail on its 3-Year Voyage

Van Dam Shipping Installs Wind Assisted Propulsion System
The Netherlands-based Van Dam Shipping has signed a contract for the installation of wind assisted propulsion system on one of its cargo ships.The Ventifoil system, developed by Dutch based ship designer eConowind, scheduled for delivery in the fourth quarter of 2019, would be installed on the 3,600 dwt cargo vessel MV Ankie.For eConowind BV, located in Groningen, Netherlands, it is the first commercial order of their Ventifoil system which successfully completed sea test trials earlier this year.The wind-assist system was developed over the past three years supported by an EU backed grant and this first installation marks a significant…
HMAS Glenelg Saves Sea Turtles
A quiet watch was the expectation for Leading Seaman Boatswains Mate James Cole in patrol boat HMAS Glenelg, but what he got was a lesson in ocean rescue for some entangled wildlife. “I stepped on to the bridge wing to get some fresh air and as I did, I noticed a net floating past,” he said. “As I looked closer, I saw that it was moving – there were three large sea turtles caught in the net,” Leading Seaman Cole said. A call was quickly made to Commanding Officer Lieutenant Commander Gary List, who decided to stop the boat and attempt to rescue the turtles. Glenelg launched one of her rigid hull inflatable boats with three sailors on board.
Sea Installer Receives Crane Upgrade

Dual Accreditation for VSTEP DP Simulators
In a timespan of one month, three types of VSTEP Dynamic Positioning Simulators have been officially certified and accredited by the Nautical Institute and Det Norske Veritas (DNV-GL) certification bodies. The accreditation means the new NAUTIS Dynamic Positioning simulators from VSTEP are fully certified and approved to be used for official DP training courses. The accredited Dynamic Positioning Simulators were based on different DP control types and included both Class A and Class B type DP simulators.
Dutch Pledge $8.5M to Aceh
The Netherlands has pledged $8.5 million in grants to develop a strategy for sea defense and flood protection and an early-warning system in the tsunami-ravaged areas of Aceh and Nias. A cooperation agreement for the two-year project was signed here on March 13 by Aceh and Nias Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Agency (BRR) chairman Kuntoro Mangkusubroto and Dutch Ambassador to Indonesia Nikolaus van Dam. According to the Jakarta Post, the BRR has said the absence of a sustainable coastal protection strategy would endanger the progress of Aceh's reconstruction, especially the development of houses in coastal areas, which were not sufficiently protected from the sea. The program would include consultations, disaster modeling, surveys and investigations, trial structures and embankments.
