Europe's Offshore Wind Capacity Growing

New capacity edges down 5 pct from record 2013; industry body forecasts stable growth over 2015/6. Europe's offshore wind capacity kept up a steady rate of growth in 2014 and should expand at a similar pace on average over the coming two years, an industry report said on Friday. New capacity connected to the grid totalled 1,483 megawatts (MW), edging down from 1,567 MW in 2013 when a record number of turbines and wind farms were installed, the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA) said. Total installed wind capacity now stands at around 8,045 MW, enough to cover 1 percent of Europe's electricity needs, it said. "It is not surprising that we see a levelling off of installations in 2014 following a record year in 2013," EWEA Deputy Chief Executive Justin Wilkes said in a statement.

Spotlight on German Shipbuilding

The German shipbuilding industry has a world market share of around one percent. This is certainly in another league compared to China, South Korea and Japan, which divide the global shipbuilding pie of containerships, bulk carriers and tankers among themselves. But the German shipyards are on top in Europe. Here, around 90,000 people in the shipbuilding and supply industry are employed, and the German maritime cluster remains in strategic and symbolic importance. Aside from the Norwegians…

Market Improving for German Equipment Suppliers

The German Engineering Federation (VDMA) reported a good order situation for German marine and offshore oil and gas equipment suppliers, but the upsurge in incoming orders is not making the sector euphoric. “The boom in world ship newbuilding orders in 2013 gave us strong order growth, particularly from China and Korea. Here our ongoing export commitment in the global market is paying off: Germany remains the leading country for marine equipment suppliers worldwide. At the same time, we registered above average growth in incoming orders in the offshore oil and gas area,” stated Dr. Alexander Nürnberg, Chairman of VDMA Marine and Offshore Equipment Industries, at the association’s press conference held in Hamburg on Wednesday.

CIMAC to Focus on Engines and Cylinders

It is estimated that 80 to 90 percent of world trade in volume terms is carried by vessel. There are approximately 86,000 ocean going merchant ships over 100 gt in operation. About 97 percent of them are propelled by large-bore, highly supercharged diesel engines. State-of-the-art diesel engines with maximum availability have to be reliable, maintenance-friendly, highly efficient, and they have to operate at lowest emissions. Cylinder condition is a very important item in diesel engine technology and development. Therefore CIMAC has chosen the topic: Interaction Between Engine Design, Cylinder Lube Oil Dosage, and Cylinder Condition. This type of CIMAC event has been held with great success for several years at major trade fairs like SMM, EUROPORT and ASME Turbo Expo.

The More Things Change...

The current situation of the German maritime industry is not far from that which has existed for each of the past several SMM exhibitions in Hamburg. The collective group of shipbuilders, repairers and marine equipment product and system suppliers are still widely regarded as one of the most technically capable and technologically advanced in the world, utilizing generations of accrued know-how to deliver safe, efficient and reliable vessels and systems. According to the latest world shipbuilding statistics, Germany ranks fifth in the world in terms of new tonnage built per annum, but with a market share of only four percent and an increasing outflow of business — particularly an outflow of simpler ship-type construction — to lower cost competitors in developing nations and Korea…

German Marine Equipment Industries: Expansion to Protect World Market Position

German marine equipment suppliers are staying successful. Surveys of their industry association, the VDMA (German Engineering Federation), resulted in new record figures: in 2007, the sales achieved €11.9 billion with now 76,000 employees, making over 13.8% up on the previous year. The export rate was 73%. The sector could thus maintain and expand its world leading role for high tech systems for shipbuilding. 58% of the German suppliers expect the order inflow in home trading still to increase in 2008, pushed by the still extraordinarily high capacity utilization of the German shipyards. But the effects of the global shipbuilding boom can mainly be seen in the foreign markets.

German Marine Industry: Preparing for Lean 2010

The German marine sector enjoyed 8.4% growth in 2008.

“2008 was generally still a very good year with impressive 8.4% growth. In autumn, however, gloom also spread to our sector, which has been so used to success in the last five years,” reports Dr. Alexander Nürnberg, chairman of the German Engineering Federation (VDMA) – Marine and Offshore Equipment Industries at the association’s press conference in Hamburg. “We had expected a consolidation of the  shipbuilding markets, which had been very overheated up to mid-2008. But no one could foresee the actual massive impact of declines in orders…
