Containership Loses Power Near New York’s Bayonne Bridge

Update 3: Status of NY, NJ Port, Waterways
The Port of New York is open to all tug and barge traffic carrying petroleum products. New York waterway ferries and taxi service are fully operational on the Hudson and East Rivers. Gravesend Bay anchorage south of the Verrazano Bridge as well as the anchorage north of the bridge is now open. The Hudson River is open to all vessel traffic north of George Washington Bridge. Tugs and barges are permitted to precede along the Arthur Kill waterway from the south with permission by VTS the Caption of the Port. All inspected passenger vessels are authorized to operate except within the noted exclusive zones. Anchorage Ground 21-C in Bay Ridge Flats is open to approved vessel traffic. Port Jersey Channel is open.
Reborn on the Fourth of July
It's sometimes said that great harbor cities don't appreciate their harbors, so the city of New York must be an exception. Look what happens every Fourth of July. For years without missing, regular as clockwork, Macy's fireworks display has locked-down the harbor with skies in eruption, which the masses trek shoreward to see. Around either side of that date, the fireworks season brings the burghers of Manhattan, the boaters and bathers of the Boroughs to their esplanades and beaches. Few of them know how those big black barges full of fireworks got there, but lo and behold, there they are.
Security fit for Queens
The U.S. Coast Guard is establishing security zones 150 yards in radius around the cruise ships Queen Mary 2 and Queen Elizabeth 2 during the former ship’s inaugural visit to New York Harbor. In addition, there will be a no meeting/no passing zone while these ships are in transit north of the Verrazano Bridge. The Queen Mary 2 arrives on April 22 and the Queen Elizabeth 2 arrives on April 24. Both ships depart on the evening of April 25. (HK Law).

How much water has flowed under the bridge since 1938? Well, for starters, the bridge itself - in this case, the Verrazano-Narrows - wasn't even built yet. NY’s New ‘Taxi Driver’
If you want to call yourself a taxi in New York, you've got things to live up to. Take tradition. A New York taxi always beat everybody to the punch. It was the first away when the light changed, weaving through otherwise orderly rows of cars and trucks, just in time to beat the next light. The ride not only was fast, it looked fast. The driver, all the while, dispensed worldly wisdom on any theme, and if you asked, could name the best oyster bar in the entire city. He spoke New Yorkese - an "R," (if pronounced at all) could be a "W" or a "V" - but it was English. Etched in his mind was the map of the five boroughs, and all their one-way streets. He was friendly, considerate, and caring - waited until you were indoors when he dropped you off, before cruising away for the next fare.
